Fair enough. It's just that all those passes and made shots in the video were likely all there were. I bet Joel Brown could have an even more impressive highlight real.

I'm actually happy to have him aboard, and his HS ratings and recruit list suggest he has lots of potential, but I don't expect he will come in and have close to a Shepherd-like impact next season.
who here thought Shepherd would have Shepherd-like impact when CAL signed him? anyone? I'm interested to see who develops and breaks out next season. I'm sure a few players will.

Most people thought Shepherd would start, and he had previous years of 12 and 14 points scoring averages. And on video he had some offensive skills. So people thought he would be a Bradley replacement, but a downgrade, and that is what he was. Shepherd was maybe better than advertised, but he was inefficient shooting 39% overall and 29% from 3. He took a lot of shots because someone had to.
well, I can guarantee you one thing, if furd signed Askew, CAL fans would be wondering why Fox cant sign players like that.

FWIW, 247 projected him as a first-round draft pick.

Devin Askew, Texas, Point Guard (247sports.com)

Whatever,

CAL > Texas

We agree on that. There has been so much hand wringing over transfers that are not very good. Like when Wyoming got three mediocre Pac12 transfers.

I do think it is fair to question Fox's recruiting when it will almost certainly lead to a double digit finish next year, whether Askew gets a waiver or not.

Absolutely. One player we haven't seen yet doesn't make up for the ten players we have seen.

Shepherd was a very good player for Cal. His inefficient stats was due to the number of end of clock shots he had to take

But although Shepherd had better stats at his previous stop, it was against lesser competition, and multiple coaches apparently have seen high upside from Askew

Shepherd was inefficient elsewhere, too. I think he is an inconsistent shooter. He had some great games that led directly to wins, and he was very much needed. He was the best transfer in some time.

With stats and ample video, internet yahoos like me can form their own opinions. Because Askew is not quick I do not think he has high upside. He does have real point guard skills, and his 80% free throw shooting as a freshman and good shooting form imply he might have some shooting potential. But he does not fill Cal's mega earthquake-sized scoring hole. That is what I think and I don't care much what others thought of him when he came out of high school.

This is an interesting turn. Will the team place better? I doubt it unless Fox brings in some sort of amazing stud with the second open scholarship.

We need a spot up shooter from beyond the arc -- a Jordan Mathews type of player. And that is assuming a Devin Askew can create shots for himself and others.

I didn't say that Askew will be or can be a pure scorer for us. At PG, our need is a player who can shoot and score, distribute and defend. That's a need for this year, and in particular next year. It would be good if he can also create his own shot/score at the end of the shot clock like Paris did in his senior year.

My point is Askew can be a major missing piece for our team, not the only needed piece.

Looks like he left Texas for playing time:

"Texas has two point guards arriving in the fall as part of its three-person 2023 recruiting class in five-star Arterio Morris and four-star Rowan Brumbaugh. Five-star small forward Dillon Mitchell is also a part of that 2023 recruiting class, which currently ranks No. 12 nationally"

I would have thought you guys would be a little more excited to have Devin. This thread is very subdued compared to the local press in Kentucky and Texas when he was signed by those two schools. We are a hard lot to please.

Here are some of the statements from the press in KY and TX when his signing was announced there, to help you get a little stoked. I'm not sure of how talented Okafor is, or the "player to be named later (I hope), but Devin could very well be our best player, and if he is the kind of player I think he is, he can make our other players look better. One thing to remember: Askew skipped his senior year at Mater Dei to start playing for Kentucky early, which means he will be a junior at Cal this season, but starting out as a sophomore in terms of experience. He is still young, and I expect him to develop.

I don't doubt that he's talented, but he may not be able to play next year and as long as Fox is the coach, the program will suck-which is the real issue.

Thanks for posting that! I didn't know Askew had finished high school in 3 years. Wish I had done that.

I'm actually feeling a little better about next season even though I'm not expecting us to get anywhere near the top half of the conference. If everyone is healthy, our younger players show noticeable improvement, and Askew shows us why he was so highly rated we could be watchable.

Well, for Kentucky that was before anyone saw him play.

Now Texas has decided to recruit over him also.

So, yeah, there's a lot less excitement now than if he'd been signed straight out of high school.

That said, he's still the best recruit we've had since Bradley and he plays a position this team SORELY needs.

I'm pretty excited! Looks like he can be a real asset for us. I do really hope that Fox doesn't fill the '23 class with a bunch of non-ranked or three-star players though. We are still a couple major pieces away from being competitive. I think I'm more just disappointed that our next coach (assuming that Fox does eventually get fired lol) presumably won't be able to recruit his first class until the class of '24, which is disappointingly far away. I really wish we had moved on from Fox in March.

Looking at his stats, he is an upgrade over Joel Brown at PG and a huge upgrade over anyone who would be Brown's backup. While better than his offense, his defense is not as good as Brown's but he at least offers some offense making him better rated as a player overall. The fact that he was once a very highly rated recruit gives hope that he underachieved at Kentucky and Texas and has upside that he might realize at Cal. He is a not a program changer but he fills a gaping hole, and might even beat out and be an upgrade over our current starter. I am happy he is coming to Cal. He falls into the Jamal Boykin and Marcus Lee (and guys like Crawford in football) path of smart California kids who were highly rated out of high school, signed with top schools, but then were recruited over and realized their NBA dreams were unlikely to happen and going to Cal where they can start and get a good degree was their best path forward.

There is no doubt Devin physically is a Pac 12 level player at a key position, and he also is young and maturing having reclassified from the 2021 to 2020 high school class. This is a good pick-up - he was OC player of the year as a junior. Since people, like parents, read this site, I'm not going into specifics, but the present roster has several scholarship players on it, who are not P5 level players. If this guy can replace Brown next season, that is a plus. But there still is no reliable scorer on this team for Devin to pass to presently

Unless Fox finds an inside/bigs scoring to replace Kelly and Ant, this next season is a double digit conference finish. About half the minutes and scoring are gone with Shepard (a better player than some think), Kelly and Ant gone. They need players that can score right now. I'm assuming Fox has one open scholie left to get this right. This should not be news to anyone.

In a more competitive environment, Fox would have been forced to cut bait on certain players, and the portal does have guys who can play at the P5 level.
