I was asked to join a zoom call today. Turns out we were meeting with Al Grigsby. He's now the assistant AD at Seattle University. We spent the first few minutes of the call talking about the mid 90's CAL teams.

We have so many alums in athletics administration and sports management, both at the college and professional level.

Can you tell us more about your conversation?

And, why cannot we hire a competent person to run our Athletic Department?

Go Bears!

Going in I had no idea who we were meeting with. I logged in a few minutes late.
Our CEO introduced me to Al as his co-founder and mentioned that I'm a CAL grad. Al then asked when I graduated and that he did so in 1997.
I still had no idea he was Al Grisby.
It wasn't until I put my cursor over his video image and his names popped up that I realized who I was meeting with.

So I said something along the lines of - Al Grisby, you were my favorite player all 9 years you were at CAL. Obviously joking about the fact that he was on the team for 6 years.
We talked about a few of the players from that time - Murray, Kidd, Buckley, etc
I mentioned that I saw on social media that there were a number of basketball alums that I recently visited the team for some sort of function. He knew nothing about it.
He did mention that Stevie Johnson ( also a CAL player from that era ) also works at Seattle University in the athletic dept. I asked if he was still rail thin. Apparently he's not.

Al ended the meeting with a resounding GO BEARS! I ended it with **** Stanfurd. Well, I actually didn't say that but I should have. I'm meeting him in person next Tuesday, I'll say it then.

Did you ask him why they unretired his number? Or did they? I am not sure what the status of that is since I haven't been back at Haas in a while. He was part of our last Sweet 16 in 1997, which is a great memory (near upset of Vinsanity and UNC) and pathetic at the same time that we haven't been able to get past the first weekend of the NCAAs going on 26 years.

the other Seattle U person in the meeting ( who went to Gonzaga ) said something about not having his jersey hanging in the rafters like Al, so I suppose Al's jersey wasn't un-retired.

unfortunately the jerseys are no longer hanging from the rafters after the new scoreboard.

They are nicely mounted in the hallway inside Haas, but it's just not the same.

They need to somehow put them back inside the area

He didn't know about the event?!?!?! I shouldn't be surprised as this is so typical of the leadership. How the heck do you hold an event and not inform a guy whose jersey you retired? The fact he didn't know about it also speaks volumes about how close he has stayed in touch with the program.

We need new leadership across the board.
