Likely. Davis is D1 Basketball, so they'll likely have better/bigger players to a degree.
I expect the Bears play better than they did, but they do have 6 new players. Hopefully Clayton is healthy and we see more of him. He's a 1,500 point scorer a similar level to Davis.
Cal has four new scholarship players as far as I am aware, two transfers and two freshmen. I do like Fox's excuse talking points.

4 new players is actually below the average these days. However our bottom dwelling athletics department has become really good at making excuses for the coaches and administrators and surrounding themselves with others who will do the same.
Cal had extra practices and games due to the Europe trip. Should have hit the ground running...

Agreed. Citing the one practice where four guards were unavailable was ridiculous. How many other practices have they had together?

After the start v. Chico State, and the lack of scorers we have, I would be pleasantly surprised if we beat UC Davis. And I have no idea how good they are. I just know they are D1.

I'm counting Bowser and to a lesser degree Roberson based on how little they have played due to injuries.
I don't think you should. Bowser is in his third year in the program, Roberson in his second. And why do you want to be repeating Fox's excuses?

Cal has three fourth year seniors and two experienced transfers. It is a veteran team. They are bad because they are bad.
I'm thinking maybe let them play an actual game before declaring them bad. Why rush?
I thought we were talking about the Chico game.

It was an exhibition game. It was not a regular season game.
yup. i cant imagine in CAL's first regular ssason game Roberson will play more minutes than Brown. But, if your chosen narrative is that we suck, then its best to ignore things like that.
Now what?

Watching the apologists make excuses will be the most entertaining aspect of the season.

Okay, I'm not trying to make excuses, but there is such a thing as reasons. Notice how seniors Kuany, Thiemann and Brown don't seem to have much in the way of basketball skills? Well, two summers ago, they had to practice on tennis courts, so no wonder! Tennis courts! And you wonder why Brown's shots look like volleys...

Also, the roster was down FIVE players for tonight: Clayton, plus two walk-ons, plus Celestine and Hyder, both of whom we have known would be out since the spring or summer. Still, five is five!

Last week, there was a practice in which four of our guards couldn't practice! An Assistant had to fill in. And all of our Assistants are older!

People seem fixated on the wins and losses, but we all know there's more to athletics than that! Like long-term contracts with no buyouts!

All time favorite excuse is missing guards at one practice, including one who was in class and presumably returned the next day.

That was a good one. I also think the "perpetual rebuild" excuse is clever.

Okay, the way you phrase it, sure it sounds bad. But what you didn't know was, that was the practice where Fox had planned to teach the guards how to shoot three-pointers.

Askew is goid but he is not a three shooter. I watched-an hour in practice and it was not pretty. Bowser did make severalmin avrow but none in the game

I think for the most part, shooters have shown themselves to be shooters by the time they are 17 and need to be recruited not developed in college.

One of the things fans criticized Fox for at Georgia was his recruiting long athletic low skill guys for defense while seemingly ignoring three point shooting, and having recruited one, not playing him enough (defense).

Celestine can shoot some, but I think Rodney Brown is the first "pure" shooter, a guy known primarily for his three point shooting, that Fox has landed at Cal. He is the type of player that was a key part of nearly every Monty team at Stanford and Cal.

I think we are hoping Askew becomes a "scorer" but if Kidd could become a 3 point shooter maybe Askew can too.
