Well, last I checked native tribes use the term "Indian Gaming" when describing their own casino industry.

Nah. Spaniards stole the land of Berkeley from the indigenous folks in 1820. Mexico stole the land from them a year later. The US stole it from Mexico in 1848, through the use of god chosen white emigrant settler's years of trouble making. The Peraltas sold the land, under duress, to land speculators who used political connections to move UC out of Oakland to the present site.

It's business.

Are they doing an announcement or something?

While I'm not super proud of that episode of our history, if we're not going to give it back to them, we ought to quit virtue signaling. Maybe just try and help them as much as we realistically can. And I don't mean by granting them rights to run gambling. Geez, the world can seem totally screwed up sometimes.

You're brazenly insensitive in this thread, and I find that troubling.

Nonetheless, I do have a question for you: what is this announcement you speak of?
Details please.
Thx.

A curse! That explains not winning March Madness in 1960. As for 1959, maybe the curse only works in even number years.

The Dwinelle Hall Annex is also a burial ground for the remains of History majors that got lost there in the 1970's and were never seen again.

*They showed Deep Throat at Dwinelle when I was at Cal. How weird was that?

Nowadays they are probably showing that movie in kindergarten, or at least by 1st grade.

Read about this for the first time when I read Irving Stone's book a few years ago. It never surfaced in history class in grammar school, high school, or at Cal in Walton Bean's California History class (at least not that I remember):

This is actually becoming pretty common at UCs and CSUs. For example, on my son's tour of SLO (we are knee deep in College tours) they kicked things off that way. The CSU my business partners with also kicks off public events with an acknowledgment of traditional lands. Usually it takes the form of "I want to aknowledge the First people of these lands and that we hold this event on the traditional homeland of the XXX People."

I am of 2 minds of it. First, the historian in me knows that whomever "had" the land at the time of European conquest probably didn't have the land at the time of the land bridge with Asia. So the idea that it is "ancestoral" just isn't culturally or anthropologically accurate in many (most?) instances. The story of humananity is constant conflict between "us" and the "other". And we know that the whole mythos of indylic peacefulness of the americas' before arrival of Europeans is ridiculous.

Second, I don't see the harm and it is probably not a bad thing to bring attention to California Native American's. Anything that makes people think about history is a good thing in my book.

The evidence is that the Ohlone/Miwok culture lived in the Bay continuously for thousands of years. When the Europeans arrived the landmarks were the many huge shell mound middens next to the Bay, over 100 feet high, from millions and millions of meals of clams, oysters and mussels, plus stealhead trout, salmon, Dungeness crab, deer, elk, ducks and geese eaten with acorn fry bread. With so much high quality food readily available year round there was not a lot of conflict.

You misunderstand. It was a joke, and it was prophecy, not outrage. If it were to happen, for me it would draw my contempt. And it should be so for right-wing, left-wing, any wing, or no wing. It is not a political. It is a moral issue, if anything.

Absent being able to examine written language and a wide range of cultural artifacts it is really difficult to determine patterns of migration and conflict.

There is an archeological record. There is now DNA analysis thst shows the long continuity. In places where there was conflict you find weapons. You find the remains of fortified encampments on top of hills or mesas. People live in cliffs. You find skulls with holes in them, with few people who died of old age.

Even if the Ohlone had come to the Bay Area within the previous several hundred years where there was more warfare (the Navajo to the Southwest and the Aztecs to Mexico) it would be like saying Anglo Saxons are not indigenous to England, or really no Europeans have any claim to their land because it is just "centuries of warfare, successive waves of immigration, different cultures and languages."

We could return some public land to the first people. Enough so they could set aside reservations for displaced white people.
