Much as I think we need a coaching change I'm not in favor of mid-season firing unless some kind of malfeasance is involved.
Usually, I agree with this, but the last time Cal did this, I think we made a sweet 16 run?...
Aside from ethical questions I'd ask:
Has Fox lost the team? Is it falling apart from internal dissension?
Is the situation similar? Do we have enough talent to reach the top half of the PAC-12?
Who would we hire at this time? Where would we find a great long-term coach? How much better would a temp do?
How did the rushed hiring of Bozeman work out in the long run?
My answers are all negative.
First off, I was just kidding. Ethically, you and I are on the same page, but there are pragmatic reasons to avoid mid-season terminations as well - mainly because the candidate pool is limited. But to your asks . . .
Lost the team? I have no way of knowing. The body language of the players isn't as bad as Jones - so no? But the prior case of which I was kidding - there was outright player revolt including going to the AD to complain about Campy verbally abusing the players.
Talent? That sweet 16 team was loaded with talent. I've coached with both Campy and Bozeman. Campy was a better X/O guy. Bozeman was a better recruiter and emotional team builder - the latter of which is all that team needed to succeed.
Who to hire? see my pragmatic point above.
Bozeman long run? Oh the stories I could tell . . . Bozeman, however was aware of his shortcomings and had some pretty good assistants on his staff. But in the long run, I thought Braun was better than either Campy or Bozeman. Yes - in the long run, I think Cal was better off getting rid of Campy when they did.
So Yeah, unless Monty is chomping at the bit to save the program - or Coach K wants to come out of retirement - I don't think anything's going to happen this week.
