Is it too much to hope that Knowlton will meet Fox on the tarmac and end this garbage?

So UC San Diego must have similar admission requirements than Cal for a BB player

So their center looks better than ours
If you traded players from us to them...ucsd would still be winning, coaching makes a difference

Their HC, alum Eric Olen, makes $85,000 per year.

So whoever said it, tell me again why "we had to go cheap, no other coach will come to Cal for the measly $1.7 million Fox makes"?
Almost every game we see a better alternative than Fox. He was an only at Cal hire who bring nothing to the table.

Cal has been dreadful to watch. Tough for die hard fans, especially the alumni who invest time, love and their money to see this. JK needs to pull the plug. Start over and find a competent coach who is a big time recruiter and get this program off the ground. I don't want to hear how Walk-ons are injured.

Fox has to go.

The silver lining to losing to UCSD is that it means Fox is one step away from getting the axe.

This season is a throwaway anyways so might as well use it to induce the powers that be to make a long overdue change.

Everyone knew who would take the last shot for UCSD. So why not switch to a zone or double team to take the ball out of that guy's hands? I hear Fox is a great defensive coach and all, but what was needed was common sense.

Fox post-game: "Well actually our assistant temp intern towel boy was out this week due to the flu, so we were pretty short-handed"

If Cal just played small with Newell or Kuany at the 5 and played a five out offense and zone on defense, with their vastly superior athletes, they would have won by 20. But you know, Fox.

I'm just stunned that after nearly five years, Fox still hasn't recruited an above-average 3-point shooter or two. It's comical that in 2022, Cal tried to win a game with one 3-point shot. They literally don't have anyone who can make more than 25 percent of their 3-pointers. Why can't Fox recruit a shooter?

I see so much potential in this team: We had 4 guys in double figures (Four!)... on the road!!!

Okay, so we got outrebounded 34-27, but think about it, the name Tritons... they just sound tall, don't they?

The plan, going forward: All we really need to do is take that 12%-to-40% deficit from beyond the arc and... reverse it! Do that and we will win a lot of games this season.

And here's another silver lining: It's Big Game Week and our football team actually seems fairly well-coached, relatively speaking. Go Bears! Keep that Axe!!!

Big C, I think you're on to something-- maybe the solution has been in front of us all along. Maybe we should have Fox and Wilcox switch positions! Fox is our new football HC and Wilcox can run the basketball team

A bright spot is we were 21-24 from the FT LINE (87%)

A stat like that and we still lose?

He recruits who he recruits. He employed the same losing "but keep it close" strategy at Georgia. He wants length and athleticism to play man defense.

Cal was #318 in scoring last year. We will be far lower this year. Combined with Wilcox's teams that are consistently near the bottom of the nation in scoring, our AD is doing everything he can to drive away the fans, or put the ones that show up to sleep.

I think the football team will have a better offense this week with no OC, so maybe let's see how the basketball team does with no head coach?

I like our two freshmen

Newell played within himself, not forcing anything and pulling up for nice balanced jumpers instead of crashing into people and picking up a charge

Okofor has a college-ready body and some post-scoring moves. He's not polished yet, but will have a big role this season

Both need work on defense, although when they were locked in, they defended/rebounded better

Askew also has some good offense and passing. He is very ball-dominant but probably out of necessity.

1000%

He is so insistent on running his program/system, regardless of skill sets. He cares more about getting the guys to play a certain way more than he cares about winning.

This is part of the frustration to me. There are some decent pieces to work with. Even if this team doesn't have enough to be 'good', it seem obvious to me a real coach would be getting a LOT more out of this team.

Not having shooters in college basketball is a lot like not having an OL in football

Makes everything a lot harder

So why didn't fox recruit any shooters?

Hoop Dreams if, as you say, you like the pieces you should be in the front of the line advocating that Fox be replaced and these pieces be turned over to an interim coach that can help them maximize their skills and performance.

Can anyone expound on Fox's staff and their roles? I feel like I don't know anything about them as their visibility is near zero.

Andrew Francis: Came from the east/midwest fairly highly regarded and would likely be the interim if Fox left.

Chris Harriman: Aussie whose reputation is as an international recruiter. Seems to be animated from the bench and in TOs.

Marty Wilson: Was HC at Pepperdine, but things went south. Is from the same "coaching tree" as Fox (Tom Asbury), which is probably why he was hired (also continuity from previous regime).

Seems to get in players' faces and yell a lot. I think he yelled at Anticevich in Australian.

I like some of our players, but not necessarily in their current roles.

Two of the three players are freshmen and although they have talent and potential, shouldn't be thrust into a central role so early without more players around them.

Askew is a good PG, but he's asked to do too much, and would be much better if he had some shooters around him

And as for advocating for replacement of Fox?

I just leave that to others (of which there are plenty). Not just Fox, but every other Cal sports coach

Knowlton might pick Wilson for the same reason he picked Fox and it would be the wrong choice for the same reasons.

I saw an interview with Andrew Francis from 10 years ago when he was at Iowa and he seems really good, good personality, smart, knows basketball, like I'm surprised Fox hired him and he took the job level of good. I would fire Fox and make him interim today. Let him decide if he wants to keep Harriman and Wilson around.
