We are currently paying him $237,000 per loss. The good news is that dollar amount will decrease as the losses pile up.

How do we get nearly 20 offensive rebounds and only 51 points……..what do we do, throw the ball out and not go back up? Or are the bricks so bad they flow over the other team that is boxing out??
7 of out 19 OR are attributed to "team". I assume that means deadball rebounds. Anyway we made only 10 of 27 layups.

We have a few guys that might make a ROSTER, but only as deep bench players. We have no one who would start anywhere else in the conference.

F what you say. They're showing their disgust. More people should. We don't support the players by supporting an incompetent coach. And believe me, the players probably appreciate it.

With respect, TheFiatLux, I strongly, strongly disagree.

I went through the maybe-I-wear-a-paper-bag process in my mind, during (I think) the Holmoe years. Here's what I concluded: Wearing a paper bag says that you are ashamed of Cal, ashamed of being a Cal Fan, or ashamed of the athletes out there, competing for Cal. If that is the case, I would advise this: Don't do something, don't be something that you are ashamed of. Life's too short and you are also shaming yourself.

If you, BearlyCaresAnymore, or anybody else wants to take a timeout from following Cal Football or Basketball, fine. That is your prerogative and going to the games out of some kind of "loyalty" went out with $5 bottles of water, BART car races and, most recently, NIL.

Alternatively, post your frustrations on a Cal fan site, write a letter, contact some contacts, affect some change. The change is needed.

But no, I don't think the student athletes do appreciate "fans" showing that they are ashamed of being fans. I think they are trying their hardest to perform their best. It's no joke to them.

The product that Fox is putting on the court is poor and that sucks. But I am not ashamed to be rooting for Cal and for the athletes representing Cal, no more than I would be ashamed of rooting for my 10 year old daughter's soccer team (also a winless season... but with a tie in their last game).

Go Bears.

we were within 3 points, and had a couple of shots to make it 1 or 0.

Askew was aggressive thoughout, and even dived for a ball to almost get a steal in the closing moments of the game. He also got in the face of another Cal player, and then with a SC player in the hand shake line after the SC player obviously trash talked at him. Askew certainly has a lot of confidence, fight-to-the-end attitude and hustle and also offensive talent. Good player and good thing we have him.

Lars was solid offensively and on the boards. SC's post defender was quick and athletic and sped him up on a couple shots, but overall SC lacked their typical post size/talent. I think they will drop down the conference a little.

Okofor got six offensive rebounds, but showed his rawness when he tried to shoot putbacks. He will improve.

Newell continues to show potential, although he needs to gain strength. Weight room for him.

2K continues to show flashes on defense, but he needs to be able to hit that mid range with more consistency because that shot will be available to him.

Brown frustrates me with his lack of finishing around the rim. He has improved by changing speed more often, but if he had any kind of jumper it would really help his offense.

As a team, we played good defense at times, reduced turnovers, and was even on rebounding.

But our lack of shooting is really tough to overcome

I don't understand the criticism of Bill Walton who clearly loves (and would be a good fit in) Berkeley. Yes he meanders, but is always entertaining particularly when nothing of note is happening on the court. I often wonder, if Newell had not retired, would Cal have remained a national power and would he have been able to recruit Lew Alcindor (as he was known then)? If so, would Walton have come to Cal like his dad (and later his sister)?

I particularly enjoyed the banter between Walton and Roxy. Heck, I'd pay to see them go at each other.

Finally, regarding his praise of Fox, remember that Walton (and Roxy) are employees of the Pac 12, which cannot tolerate criticism of its members administrations or coaches. I don't recall announcers criticizing Jones (or even Sonny during his horrible first year).

Sorry Big C, but The Fiat Lux is spot on (as usual). Fans with paper bags could have chosen to stay home (and who could blame them?); instead they are paying for tickets and devoting their time to watch, cheer, and support the team. We have a tendency to tolerate mediocrity (or, in this case, worse). Alumni and fans at SC, Southern Branch, Michigan, Texas, Ohio State, etc. do not. That's why they historically have far better and more successful teams. How long did we tolerate Holmoe? How long will we continue to put up with Fox? At other schools he would have been fired by now; instead we give him an extension. The people with bags on their heads are making a statement that needs to be heard by administration, a statement in support of the players which the players themselves cannot make.

With all due respect, and I certainly mean that, I think I have a pretty good feel for what the student athletes are feeling. I firmly believe they are appreciating criticism directed at coaches whom they cannot criticize.

During the UCLA football debacle in 2018, I very very uncharacteristically tweeted out my displeasure during the game... It was pretty funny stuff and none was directed at an individual player, but that performance was putrid. Now, it's not my role in life to be a negative Ned, but that's about as peeved as I have been at a game. As I was heading home, I was thinking i should delete those tweets or at least reach out to my friends on the team... before i could do that, several had messaged me saying they agreed with me and they were embarrassed. Several came over for dinner that Sunday... Trust me, these guys (and gals) now what life is.

I'm angry at Cal over this Fox hire and I'll be damned if I just shut it off, or passively let him fly by. When I saw a photo of him tweeted out by Cal at the ND football game, I almost literally said f off to the photo... . If I went to a game, I guarantee you I would wear a shirt connoting that Fox should be fired (I love the Firefox browser idea) and would make sure I was very visible.

I'm human, I'm a fan, and more importantly Cal is in my blood. Fox is a mercenary. And a terrible one at that. I could give a rat's ass if his feelings are hurt. I want him to know, I want him to see what he has done to this one proud institution.

I watched the game and yes - Bill Walton seemed more medicated and less prepared than usual. But what seemed VERY OBVIOUS on TV is that Enfield viewed this game as a controlled scrimmage. There were a couple of moments when they went real soft and let Cal think they were in it, but quickly closed the door each time. The 18-0 run at the end was the real game.

And why wouldn't he? It's a great tune up for Pac 12 play and doesn't impact his OOC record.

Furthermore. Enfield wanted Fox to look good and still lose by 15. Fox has got to be his favorite coach. USC gets a couple W's each season, some good scrimmage, his California recruiting has become a bit easier since he arrived. He's like the second coming of Johnny Dawkins, but leaving more talent available for the rest of the conference.

To be clear, I have no problem with actively advocating for the removal of Fox at the games... and would appreciate the inclusion of Knowlton (unless that muddies the message too much).

The FireFox hats are great. A sign is fine. A letter is better; protests are best.

Just not the paper bag idea, which says you are ashamed of Cal, of being a Cal fan and of the game itself (and, by extension, the players). If you are ashamed of something, just don't do it.

Support the players: Advocate for better coaches and better athletic leadership. No bags over the head, please. Cheer for the players, if you can stand going to the games.

Go Bears.

I am of Walton's generation and I am into a lot of things that he is and I get and appreciate his cultural references. He is a smart man, and he'd be the first to tell you that.

With that said, there is a bullying aspect to his schtick. He simply crosses the line by going down endless winding hallways of his stream of consciousness and his attitude to both the viewers and his play by play partner is "F@uck you if you don't like it."

Bill wouldn't tolerate for 10 seconds someone spewing forth on subjects that don't interest him, yet he expects that from the viewing audience, a large percentage of which is too young to know what he is even talking about.

Unfortunately, this Cal season, Bill Walton's color commentary is probably a perfect fit for us.*

*With the exception of his patently false and unsupportable praise of our coach.
*It is too bad he had bad feet. In my opinion, he would have been one of the greatest players that ever lived. He was awesome when healthy.

At the game last night:

-Story of the Game: our talent deficit was on full display. We simply don't have players that can put the ball in the basket and the offensive "gameplan" isn't helping them. This IS NOT a depth issue.

-Spacing and passing continues to be a problem. Too much dribbling by Askew. Players standing around in the corners. Not cutting, no screening. Fox offense at it's finest.

-Fox yelled at players multiple times. I am just waiting for a player to yell back. It's going to happen.

-This SC team was very beatable. Other than Boogie and Peterson, they don't have much.

-As mentioned, seeing the ushers and AD staffers moving students out of empty sections was really disheartening. For some reason, student attendance is pretty good, don't make the experience for them and the atmosphere worse. Yes, if ticketholders can't sit in there seats, by all means remove them but this is clearly not the case. When the section next to the band was cleared of students, it remained empty and an usher was planted there on guard for the rest of the game. What a joke. This isn't Chase Center.

-Game Ops introduced Randle, Lampley and Domingo on the videoboard which was good but of course they didn't mention Mullins and Thurman who were literally in the same shot. Embarrassing. They did introduce them in a later break realizing they screwed up.

-Knowlton was there and he was smiling and gladhanding. At the end of the game he hid out in one of the corner entryways. He has some balls showing up to this mess.

-The Band was great. They were into the game and vocal. They had some good trash-talking chants going.

-There was an in-house DJ. Hadn't seen that before. I guess that's one way of trying to enhance game experience.

If this thread was 500 pages long like one of Shocky's Monster themed topics, all the analysis could be reduced to HoopDream's single sentence above.

Having a couple of players that can knock down a Trey or drop a midrange J would be a great deodorant for other deficiencies.

It is frustrating indeed to watch these young men gut their way back into contention in a game but then be defeated because they can't respond to the other team having a second half run of any consequence.

Walton mentioned *twice* that Okafor did not "look Irish." I know what he means, but Irish also refers to citizens of the Republic of Ireland, and what he said should not be said. I thought I could not dislike him more, but this added an extra layer. His act is tiresome and adds nothing to the broadcast. I thought Roxy did a good job of pushing back on Walton's nonsense like saying Askew was a pro from the age of 14.

Walton's cutesy Irish comment (which Ted Robinson has said before), is probably benign enough on its face but it is a race based quip involving Black and White people, and as such, probably not the best optics coming out of the mouth of an old White guy.

My guess is that African immigrants in Ireland have experienced more than their share of racism and that they might be offended by such comments…..however if Okafor and Sam Alijiki are not offended by Walton's comments, I suppose I have no standing to be.

We have a few guys that might make a ROSTER, but only as deep bench players. We have no one who would start anywhere else in the conference.
It is not so much quality, although that is a problem, but how they fit together. As I said before the season they don't have anyone who should be more than the fourth best scorer. Celestine might be a second or third best scorer, but none of the other guys out fill that scoring gap. That is why Fox's complaints about injuries ring hollow. Even with everyone they would lose almost all their games.

And the wings who can't handle the ball or shoot don't help.

What is confounding about the roster Fox has been building is he keeps replicating the skills/non-skills of the guys he already has, maybe hoping for incremental improvement, but not offering any ability to put together a team where the skills compliment each other and the total can be greater than the sum of the individual players.

He is clearly going to try to grind out extremely low scoring games against the conference. It kept us "close" against USC in the first half. It creates the illusion of "competitiveness" and he milked that style for 9 years at Georgia. His non-existent offense is Askew attempting to fill the hero-ball shoes of Shepherd who attempted to fill the shoes of Bradley who in turn was playing the role of Kontavious Caldwell-Pope in Fox offense at Georgia.

In the post game presser, Fox said he knew what he was signing up for, as if the Cal situation was so hopeless. Then he added that he did not know covid was going to happen, like Cal was the only school with covid issues. And of course this year he bemoans injuries literally every time he is front of a mike. I wonder how often a dog ate his homework.

He could use Hue Jackson's mantra as Raider HC after every loss:

"This loss is entirely on me."
