Game on! Wednesday, December 21st. 4:00 Tip at Haas Pavillion. Possible Game of the Century!
The Golden Bears and the Mavericks look evenly matched, give or take. What a game this could be!

+ I went to the famous Five Overtimes game against Oregon in 1977. This one could go six!

+ I went to the break-the-streak game against UCLA. A streak could be broken here, too!

+ I went to the Justin Cobbs beats #1 Arizona game. (No comparison... just thought I'd throw that in.)

If you are reading this from the ski lodge at Gstaad or Chamonix, you definitely want to jet back to Berkeley for this game! Catching some rays on Maui, Fiji or Tahiti? Get back to Berkeley right now; this'll be better!

Berkeley should value free speech: Wear a corporate t-shirt or cap that might express an opinion you have about the direction of the basketball program! Try and bring in a sign. If they won't let you in, raise a fuss. Or just roll up the sign and try to smuggle it in, as if you were extremely well-endowed.

Celebrate one or more of the upcoming holidays at the game: Bring your family and meet your friends. Or, you can just do like I'm gonna do: Enjoy wearing Cal colors and cheering the Bears to victory!

This game is going to be very special; I can just feel it. And I mean even more special than "65-58". If you can possibly attend this game, but choose not to, you may regret it for the rest of your life. Maybe. Heck, anything's possible.

GO BEARS!!! BEAT the Mavericks!!!!!

Well od, the throngs of people (hundreds) who'll be driving to the game will likely cause a lot of traffic- I would recommend leaving a day early and camping out in front of Haas (if you can find space) overnight just to get a spot

Texas Arlington beat USF last night so our hopes of continuing a perfect season are very real.

This is UT Arlington's first year in the WAC, after moving over from the Sun Belt Conference.

Their best two players are Shemar Wilson, a 6'9" JC transfer PF from Arizona and Aaron Cash, a 6'6 wing who was born in San Francisco but grew up in Notth Carolina, played for aTm last year before hitting the portal and shoots .452 from three.

It's not dead week. Finals were last week, December 12 to 16. The fall semester ended on Decmber 16. The students are now in winter break. I don't expect many students to be at the game.

What a coincidence: We have a number of players who are (approximately) shooting .245 from three!

Wait, is the order of the numbers important?

Jordan McLaughlin was a darn good PG for $C. He averaged 13 points and 6 assists (J. Kidd averaged 15 points and 8 assists at Cal). Undrafted, he signed a 6.5M contract with the Timberwolves.

He was a sturdy Golden Bear. My sacrilege: I'm probably the only guy in BI history that was not a fan of his game. I felt he shot too many times when he should have passed, and I thought the refs officiated him on defense like it was a woman's basketball game. They let him get away with murder.

His motor: highest I have ever witnessed at any level. He played like his life depended on it. No close second. His cardio routine must have been off the charts. Perhaps cross country running.

Folks, be sure to get to the game plenty early: I hear there are plans to heat up coins and then roll them onto the court as the Mavericks are taking pre-game warmups!

Yes, well aware. He was a personal favorite.

If I ruffled feathers my apologies. That was not my intention. We could use a guy like him today.

loosely edited transcript from 12:42 pm on saturday september 10th, 2022 at memorial stadium:

4th gen bear (waving at me, he sits 3 rows down on the 50 yard line in around the 25th row): hey shocky, get over here, there's somebody i want you to meet, joel brown

shocky (fist bumping): what up, joel, ima shocky, your my favorite player, you gotta lotta energy except when you dribble with you head down to nowhere

joel: well, thanks i guess

shocky: so what's your gpa?

joel: pretty good, i'm going to graduate from the haas business school

shocky : me too, glad your not a dumb azz, are you working on your crooked azz shooting?

4th gen bear is kinda shaking his head, how did this conversation go so far off the rails he's wondering

shocky: hey randy should hook you up with his friend who is the shooting whisperer, don't be fooled by the fact that he's a girl's high school basketball coach at pinewood high school, he knows his stuff

joel: well actually coach fox has been working with me on my stroke this summer, this is my first real summer staying in berkeley

shocky: show me

joel demonstrates the new stroker for the shockster with an imaginary basketball, his elbow is perpendicular to the basket kinda like pure shooters j-mat and the bird, there's no more of that protruding chicken elbow that has marred his stroke in past seasons

shocky (getting excited): dude, that stroke is a 1000% better, your the only +1 athlete on the team, there's literally no reason you can't attack the baket this season knowing you can knock down the free throws when you get hacked by defenders that are gonna be a step too late to your blur game...what's gonna be your free throw percentage this season?

joel (with a big azz smile): thanks, hope to shoot in the high 80s this season...think in the past i kinda let the mental part of shooting bother me too much plus maybe i wasn't in as good as shape and my legs let me down particularly late in games

shocky (nodding his head): yeah your shot has been way too flat during your time in berkeley, do you know where your shots miss, are you familiar with splatter charts?

joel: no

shocky: splatter charts are used in the nba by scouts and player development coaches to determine where shots are missed, are they left or right which is a huge red flag or are they missed long or short?

joel (deep in thought): last season most of my misses were usually short

shocky: right and that's because your shots had too low of a flat trajectory because of the chicken wing stroke and also because you weren't driving with your legs fluidly thru the stroke...dude, your good to go now, can't wait to see you ball out this season

joel: thanks, really looking forward to playing with our improved talent this season, playing with devin askew is gonna be really fun

shocky: well, that's good to hear, i got high hopes for you joel, do you speak canadian?

Is that Carl Bird #30 in the background? Good shooter, we could use him too. If so that's 1975-76, we could use most of the players on that team.
sonofabear51
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Good eye stu. Not sure if it is indeed Carl. But it is in the time period when I became hooked on Cal Basketball and Harmon. It seems there were so many players I identified with back then. Another guy I really liked was Ray Murry. If I recall correctly, he hit 2 free throws after an Oregon TO to tie the game again at the end of one of the OT's of the 5 OT game Cal won. Never forgot it, we were under the south basket and it was right in front of me.

Jason Kidd
Lamond Murray
Ed Gray
Tyrone Wallace

Jerome Randle
Brown

Saw them all play in person. How far we've fallen. Thanks also for the pictures of Jorge and Clean Gene (RIP).

This almost wants to make me win this game, rather than seeing Fox suffer.

Almost.
