4) And finally, and this is touchy, you have to have a coach who has shown a track record in connecting with African American students who will be entering a campus where they are a decided minority. Not Cal Poly levels of undiversity but it is something you gotta be able to navigate.
The Bennet system works in part because of the Austrialian pipeline he has spent 2 decades cultivating. The Coaches there KNOW HIM and his assistants. They actually have a number of foreign students that are from Australia on the campus - providing additional cultural support for kids coming 6000+ miles.
If you look at 1 through 4 that is why Paternack is the ONLY choice. He is the ONLY candidate that checks off all the boxes. Gates doesn't. Travis doesn't really. ONLY Paternack. Can we just ****ing fire Fox and get on with it.
100% agree. He is very well connected to the wealthy donors. And many former players hold him in high regard - a few examples - Sean Marks, Leon Power, Richard Midgely, Omar Wilkes, Theo Robertson, and many more as well.socaltownie said:

Agree Knowlton is the worst but we haven't been to the heights of where SMC is even with Montgomery. Never consistently ranked and never beyond the round of 32.
So it is beyond the AD but it definitely starts there. How about we get rid of him so we can remove that obstacle and figure out what the next road block is....well we know that is Fox. So let's get rid of these two like we have been saying now for years and find the next obstacle.

Agree Knowlton is the worst but we haven't been to the heights of where SMC is even with Montgomery. Never consistently ranked and never beyond the round of 32.
So it is beyond the AD but it definitely starts there. How about we get rid of him so we can remove that obstacle and figure out what the next road block is....well we know that is Fox. So let's get rid of these two like we have been saying now for years and find the next obstacle.

2. inject some NIL
3. start on some sort of practice facility
This gets us up to the middle of the conference, at least.
We need a new AD at some point, but I don't know what we're going to do about his contract, so maybe we do an end run to get a better coach, while we're working on the new AD.

There has always been a disconnect between our academic leaders, usually from other schools, often with no sports background or interest, the ADs they hire, and the students and alumni who love Cal's sports teams and treasure our traditions.
It is the NIL era. Times are changing and we can use this moment and our AD's gross incompetence, but long term contract, to propose a radical change.
I think we should create an alumni-run non-profit organization that would take over much of the management of the revenue sports, hiring and firing coaches, paying their "talent" fee, and paying the players NIL. Managing the game day.. they could take over the Learfield contract. Hire Starkey's successor. Market Cal football and basketball. Make sure the Cal band gets to play. Everyone who contributes gets to vote for the board of directors and/or or president (the shadow AD). It would democratize the AD function and draw a lot more donations, since your donation gives you a direct say .
Knowlton would just become the rubber stamp, a role he is actually suited for. The AD budget can be slashed, positions eliminated or transferred to the booster organization and salaries for tge AD can be kept more in line with other university administrators'
Cal would be at the leading edge of the new world of college sports.
