It is a great question. Now I do believe that comparing a big public landgrant university like Cal to a VERY small parochial college located in a dead end valley in an affluent exurb is a bit apples to organges but the point is VERY well taken. And supposedly Bennet turned down the Cal job when offered/asked to apply.
But lets also say that we KEEP TRYING TO DO THE SAME THING and getting the same result. Isn't that the defintion of insanity.
1) You need a coach who can recruit the west coast. Repeat after me - when it comes to revenue sports Cal is a REGIONAL school. Even more specific - in the West Coast that means recruiting SOCAL. We keep hiring coaches with no connection to SoCal and expect them to somehow suceed....
2) You need a coach who understands UC. Point in fact - really at no other large land grant public is sports considered very much an afterthought and has so much power vested in faculty. If you spend your first three years trying to figure out why you can't get a recruit in by just asking the AD to make a call to the President and the Governor you are going to waste your time.
3) You need a coach who can connect with donors. The new world is about NIL. We absolutely have to have a dedicated practice facility.
4) And finally, and this is touchy, you have to have a coach who has shown a track record in connecting with African American students who will be entering a campus where they are a decided minority. Not Cal Poly levels of undiversity but it is something you gotta be able to navigate.
The Bennet system works in part because of the Austrialian pipeline he has spent 2 decades cultivating. The Coaches there KNOW HIM and his assistants. They actually have a number of foreign students that are from Australia on the campus - providing additional cultural support for kids coming 6000+ miles.
If you look at 1 through 4 that is why Paternack is the ONLY choice. He is the ONLY candidate that checks off all the boxes. Gates doesn't. Travis doesn't really. ONLY Paternack. Can we just ****ing fire Fox and get on with it.
