Or a #200 rank. Actually are we in the 300s?

Yes, I will try to explain why Cal MBB and WBB are in such a poor situation in bullet point format:

. Knowlton

Go Bears!

St. Mary's is #7 in Ken Pom, #6 in Sagarin Predictor and #5 in Sagarin Recent.

Their leading scorer at 15 ppg is freshman PG Aiden Mahaney.

Their players are almost all from California (mostly the Bay Area) or international players, especially from Australia.

It is a great question. Now I do believe that comparing a big public landgrant university like Cal to a VERY small parochial college located in a dead end valley in an affluent exurb is a bit apples to organges but the point is VERY well taken. And supposedly Bennet turned down the Cal job when offered/asked to apply.

But lets also say that we KEEP TRYING TO DO THE SAME THING and getting the same result. Isn't that the defintion of insanity.

1) You need a coach who can recruit the west coast. Repeat after me - when it comes to revenue sports Cal is a REGIONAL school. Even more specific - in the West Coast that means recruiting SOCAL. We keep hiring coaches with no connection to SoCal and expect them to somehow suceed....

2) You need a coach who understands UC. Point in fact - really at no other large land grant public is sports considered very much an afterthought and has so much power vested in faculty. If you spend your first three years trying to figure out why you can't get a recruit in by just asking the AD to make a call to the President and the Governor you are going to waste your time.

3) You need a coach who can connect with donors. The new world is about NIL. We absolutely have to have a dedicated practice facility.

4) And finally, and this is touchy, you have to have a coach who has shown a track record in connecting with African American students who will be entering a campus where they are a decided minority. Not Cal Poly levels of undiversity but it is something you gotta be able to navigate.

The Bennet system works in part because of the Austrialian pipeline he has spent 2 decades cultivating. The Coaches there KNOW HIM and his assistants. They actually have a number of foreign students that are from Australia on the campus - providing additional cultural support for kids coming 6000+ miles.

If you look at 1 through 4 that is why Paternack is the ONLY choice. He is the ONLY candidate that checks off all the boxes. Gates doesn't. Travis doesn't really. ONLY Paternack. Can we just ****ing fire Fox and get on with it.

Pasternak is not from SoCal nor to my knowledge are any of his assistants. Despite being at UC Santa Barbara he has zero guys on his current team from LA. (Or the Bay Area). He has 1 guy from San Diego and 1 from Oceanside. 3 from central California. Two guys from East Africa, two from Serbia and 1 from Belgium.

That said, if it is really true that there is big donor money that will only support Pasternak (including buying out Fox) and providing most of that support as NIL, then I am all in. Especially if he brings in Cal basketball alums as assistants who can help him with your #4.

100% agree. He is very well connected to the wealthy donors. And many former players hold him in high regard - a few examples - Sean Marks, Leon Power, Richard Midgely, Omar Wilkes, Theo Robertson, and many more as well.

If St. Mary's can achieve a # 15 ranking, am I being either a Pollyanna or an unreasonable old geezer to demand my alma mater achieve a # 250 rank?

Agree Knowlton is the worst but we haven't been to the heights of where SMC is even with Montgomery. Never consistently ranked and never beyond the round of 32.

So it is beyond the AD but it definitely starts there. How about we get rid of him so we can remove that obstacle and figure out what the next road block is....well we know that is Fox. So let's get rid of these two like we have been saying now for years and find the next obstacle.

This isn't rocket science (heck, we could handle rocket science... we're Cal!).

1. get a better coach (first and foremost)
2. inject some NIL
3. start on some sort of practice facility

This gets us up to the middle of the conference, at least.

We need a new AD at some point, but I don't know what we're going to do about his contract, so maybe we do an end run to get a better coach, while we're working on the new AD.

There has always been a disconnect between our academic leaders, usually from other schools, often with no sports background or interest, the ADs they hire, and the students and alumni who love Cal's sports teams and treasure our traditions.

It is the NIL era. Times are changing and we can use this moment and our AD's gross incompetence, but long term contract, to propose a radical change.

I think we should create an alumni-run non-profit organization that would take over much of the management of the revenue sports, hiring and firing coaches, paying their "talent" fee, and paying the players NIL. Managing the game day.. they could take over the Learfield contract. Hire Starkey's successor. Market Cal football and basketball. Make sure the Cal band gets to play. Everyone who contributes gets to vote for the board of directors and/or or president (the shadow AD). It would democratize the AD function and draw a lot more donations, since your donation gives you a direct say .

Knowlton would just become the rubber stamp, a role he is actually suited for. The AD budget can be slashed, positions eliminated or transferred to the booster organization and salaries for tge AD can be kept more in line with other university administrators'

Cal would be at the leading edge of the new world of college sports.

How about Jorge Gutierrez?

Pasternak must atone for his sin!! In a big way!!! I want kneeling and tears.
"Forgive me, please. My competitiveness got the better of me in that micro-instant."

Begging.

And Jorge must accept the apology and let Pasternak kiss his hand.
THEN we can offer him a contract, maybe.

It would be somewhat simple.

Any coach already has a $1.8M slush fund, at least, to contribute to the NIL player-buying process.

Fox is selfish and dooming his own reign by keeping all that salary for himself.

OR, he could donate it to the fund and purchase some winning players. You might have heard, they are available for hire. No more smoke screen about "student-athlete" mumbo jumbo.

Next coach that comes in could keep a tidy 300k for himself, buy some players and start winning, guaranteeing himself more years, glory, reputation…. Hey, it might even be considered a "program".

3 x $500k/yr oughta do it!
