I think Big C has brainwashed you. If he was such a stud, he wouldn't be playing college roulette like Joe Montana's sons did.

His career numbers are 8 PTS and 4 TRB.

He is doing better at Oral Bobs but heck, even the Mark Fox helmed Bears could win 3 or 4 games in the Summit League. Didn't Athletes in Action win the league championship a few years back? After that they were allotted the entire halftime for their riveting testimonials.

Once he rolled out the cornrows/twin pigtails hybrid 'do, he was dead to me anyway.

Thank you, Bearister. Vanover, for the first half of his season at Cal, he looked totally bewildered thenb strung together a few good games at the end and finally bailed (I certainly can't criticize him for THAT), which ensured his enshrinement in the Cal "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda" Hall of Fame. He didn't do squat at Arkansas in the . . . I assume three years he was there. Looking at Oral Roberts' schedule, they play in a conference with heavyweights like the University of Missouri - well, actually the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

So no, I don't think he would have blossomed at Cal. Watching the video, two things stand out: Vanover's agility has improved and ORU still has "Expect a Miracle" painted along one of the baselines.

If we had all those players as 23 year old sixth years, we would have a solid tourney run no matter who was coaching.

in their out of conference schedule they played two strong teams including ranked UConn and St Marys

the constant even against those teams were rebounding and blocked shots

yeah he towers over the weak conference teams who are generally undersized but he is a unicorn and would help us alot

How about "Only a miracle can save the Bears" affixed on both sidelines? You know like how Arizona uses Bear Down all over their sports facilities as their mantra and a nod to their past.

According to Ken Pom, Oral Roberts has the #15 offense in the country (Cal #241) and Vanover is the main reason.

Vanover is second on the team in scoring and leads in rebounding and blocks. He leads them in player efficiency and all the advanced metrics.

His .337 from 3 would be second on Cal. He would lead us in scoring. His 28 made threes is 8 more than anyone on our team.

Vanover and Kelly were a great young combo at the 4 and 5, just young and on a new exam that was poorly coached.

Connor is also #2 in the nation in block shots per game. Rim protector anyone? What a season he's having.

Imagine if we had Vanover, Bradley, Kelly and Sueing? Sweet 16. Shows that Wyking could at least recruit.
I for one think all fans should be allowed to have their dreams. Especially these days, when it is pretty much all we've got.

Getting back to earth, however, Conover's best year in P5 conference play was at Cal. And it was his best year shooting the three ball. As for the Bradley, Kelly, and Sueing, their best years were also at Cal. All of them seem to have made a little mistake leaving Cal. All four had their limitations. I think Cal would have had a better record with them all staying, but Sweet 16 very unlikely, and making the tournament no cinch either.

Understatement of the year. You think?

NCAAs much less the Sweet 16 are no guarantees for anyone, but it would have been that caliber of team. You have the rim protector freak who can stretch out defenses by shooting threes. You have two skilled wings in Bradley and Sueing, both who can create their own shot. Then you have the very stable Kelly who will provide good post presence as well as solid PF play. From that nucleus, we just needed to add pieces for depth. With a good coach of course (so all this could be for naught with Wyking or Fox), we would have been formidable.

Speaking of good coaches, how about that Shantay:

https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2022-11-04/10-coaches-rise-mens-college-basketball-ranked-andy-katz

I would prefer Shantay over Pasternack, although I would be OK with Pasternack.

Huh? Looks like all the transfers are on winning teams. Bradley and Sueing have played in the tourney. They (except kelly) did give up a Cal degree but oh well.

And I sure would've liked to have seen how vanover would've developed with consistent playing time. Don't think he played much at Arkansas.

He actually did blossom at Cal and it only took three months (you conveniently of left out the second half of his season here).

Glad to see Vanover enjoying some success at Oral Roberts / Sam Potter University. Maybe I will try and contact him and get two autographed pics: one for me and one for bearister.

Me too. The ONLY reason to prefer Pasternak is the promise that there are big donors who would put up BIG NIL for Pasternak (and no one else), because I do trust Pasternak to be effective in coordinating those expenditures. Joe could be the ideal Cal coach in the NIL era, especially if he brings in smart, charismatic Cal basketball alums as assistants.

I'd prefer anyone with a pulse and whose last name isn't Fox. Seriously, how much longer do we have to live with the dread of another season with the MFer?
I know that whoever takes up the torch, there's at least 2 years of rebuilding and convincing 4-stars that we're not a dog. Forget Vanover, another big man with feet of lead and hands of stone? We've already got Lars for that. Next year go for athleticism and shooting over size.

Actually, he's gainfully employed as an assistant at UW. Unlike Fox, who was unemployed for over a year when a search firm peddled him onto our simpleton in charge.

Oral Roberts together as a team is blowing up the Summit Conference. Did anyone happen to notice that Connor Vanover is making his threes, but so is just about everyone on that team except a couple scrubs and the water boy? Vanover at a respectable .347 is currently only the 7th best three point shooter on that team! The leader in percentage is Mwamba at .469, followed by McBride at .443, and Weaver at .418. The volume shooter is Max Abmas at .385, who is averaging 4 made threes per game. As a team Oral Roberts drains 11 threes per game! Abmas was on the 2021 Oral Roberts team that upset #7 Ohio State in the NCAA and lost in the Sweet 16. Oral Roberts is 11-0 in the Summit league right now, and it looks like they are looking to do some damage in the NCAA this year.

At first glance, I was a little puzzled that Mahaney's assists were only 1.9/game. I thought he was once being billed as the possible saviour at point guard for the Cal offense. Then I looked at the St Mary's roster and it appears that the senior Logan Johnson is the main point guard, getting 3.8 assists/game. St Mary's appears to be going mostly with a three guard offense, with senior Alex Ducas being the 3rd guard. Probably a pretty interesting team to watch. With the Transfer portal, can we dare to dream that Mahaney could show up in a Cal uni yet, sometime in the next few years? Probably not.

And his Oral Roberts team did lose that Sweet 16 game to Arkansas, coached by Eric Musselman, who we either tried to hire, or he tried to apply for the Cal job, and we fumbled it - I can't remember which.
