back in the day I would have said "goats" but that now means something positive.

So let me start:

1-Mark Fox
2-Wyking Jones
3-Rene Herrerias
4- Todd Bozeman
5- Cuonzo Martin
6-Jelani Gardner's Dad
7-Tremaine Fowlkes
8, Shantay Legans
9 Joe Pasternack

Why would Cuonzo Or Legans be on this list?

Cuonzo mailed it in and pre- negotiated with Mizzou.

Should have been Shantay's Mom, but he bailed on us .

Cuonzo because he bailed while leaving the cupboard dry, and Legans because he bailed on his teammates so late in the recruiting cycle that a replacement was not possible.

I ask why Fox or Jones? Sure they suck as coaches, but they didn't hire themselves.

There are some coaches that have a personality and a vibe that even though they have helmed your program to more losses than in the last 100 years, you don't hate them, you are just sorry it didn't work out and you bid them adieu and wish them well.
Mark Fox ain't that coach. He is an unrepentant program annihilator that epitomizes the Golden Rule of modern society: Always be a victim. Never own any accountability.

Herrerias is not even in the top 10.

I'm not down with the term "villains" for coaches who were unsuccessful at their jobs, nor players who transferred (will maybe make an exception for the football player who went to Furd).

That leaves Bozeman the snake-oil-salesman, but even he brought us Jason Kidd (supposedly).

Pasternack and Legans are probably on the short list to be our next coach... and deservedly so.

I disagree about Haase, a very good player who both lost his father and his starting position (another strike against Bozeman). And he's still helping us at Stanford.

Wow. Garrett Sim. Where's Richard Lee? We need his take on Sim.

We got payback so maybe we should take him off the list. Garrett never beat Cal when he was at Oregon. Neither did Altman while Monty was there.

funny thing is Monty would have been on the list a while ago, but now is one of us.

Jerod Haase hit some of the most important shots in the history of this program, and threw himself all over the basketball court in his time as a Golden Bear. One could make a case for him being co-MVP of Cal's win over Duke.

Anyone naming him a "villain" should check themselves.

Yep. He was outstanding from his first game. Too bad he couldn't stand Bozo.

Eh he certainly gave it his all for us and had some great moments.

But he was already on his way out chumming it up with Roy Williams after the Kansas NCAA game.

Then, now, he's like a different person, a Furdie.

Sorry, he is eligible for that list.

That moment jumped out at me, at the time. My take was that Williams was giving him the 30 second recruiting pitch.

Haase is intriguing, sort of like the movie character who is both good and bad. (Or see many of the characters from "The Wire".) Bad: Transferred out of Cal after one year. Good: Came to Cal in the first place and had one good year. Bad: Became Furd coach. Good: Has sucked to the point that our crappiest teams ever beat his at least half the time.

Only 3 villains as far as I'm concerned (in descending order):

Knowlton
Mike Williams
Mark Fox

Wyking doesn't count as a villain in my book since he actually tried and made efforts to improve but was just in way over his head.
stu

Certainly the three who did the most damage. Bozeman fourth.

He was negotiating with Roy Williams to transfer in the handshake line after they beat us.

Martin certainly was negotiating his exit before the season was over and left Cal hanging with a depleated roster. He needs to be near tge top of my list.

Met with Missouri officials for 5 hours in Oakland on Sunday, informed Cal on Monday, lost the first round NIT game Tuesday, resigned on Wednesday.

I do agree, the right thing to do is tell Missouri "I'm very interested but it will have to wait until my season is over" which was just a few days (though could have been more). I'm not sure that makes him a major villain, though. Especially considering the wrong Cal did to him the year before after one of the best regular seasons in our history. The fact that he had two early departures for the NBA and 5 seniors in his third year is not entirely his fault.

He "left" 4 star PG Charlie Moore, former 5 star McDonald's All American 6'11 Marcus Lee, 7'1 senior Kingsley Okoroh, had a commit from 4 Star Jamari Baker, high 3 star Justice Suring….

That could have been a nice starting 5 right there.

Much better than Fox will leave the next guy. He's the one who is leaving a "bare cupboard" and as much as I dislike him, I don't see him as a "villain" for that. Maybe running off the talent he inherited and claiming we would be better off for ii, but not his poor recruiting.

Similarly, Wyking gets a nod, not for his being in over his head, but for running off Winston and McCullough. That was villainous. That was unforgivable.

ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Jones did not handle the Winston/McCullough situation well - nor the Theo situation.
But, at least Jones came in with a plan and didn't recruit poorly.

Did Fox have a plan when he came to Cal? It sure has never looked like it.

Yeah I would imagine most employees negotiate their next job while still employed. Once you leave it's up to them to figure it out.
