I'm placing my hope in Knowlton's engineering training in Total Quality Management:
  • Define scope of the problem. Characterize the differences between the desired result (what you wanted) and actual result (what you got)
  • Determine the root causes of the differences
  • Formulate solutions to those root causes
  • Implement the solutions and hope the d@mn thing works

Scope of the problem:
  • Best Case: How to improve the entire men's basketball program including coaching, facilities, recruiting, institutional support, etc.
  • Next Best Case: Narrow the scope only improving the evaluation/hiring a new head coach. Obviously, "Dial-a-Consultant" didn't work.
  • Worst case: What problem? Blame it all on bad luck and COVID

Or the other team makes better adjustments at halftime or at the end. Cal is 0-5 this year in games decided by 3 points or less.

but you are right. if you eat it in a restaurant with others, you better get a separate table

then again, it might not be as bad smelling than stinking tofu (the wet type, not the dry type)

Before the season I offered my opinion that Lars would be one of our main scorers. I didn't expect that prediction to work out exactly this way.

This "seems" to happen to teams with a thin bench.

Our leading scorers per 40 minutes last year were:
1. Shepard
2. Kelly
3. Lars
4. Foreman
5. Anticevich
6. Celestine
7. Kuany
8. Alajiki
9. Klonaras
10. Anywanu
11. Brown
12. Hyder
13. Roberson

Lars was the only player in the top 5 to return and with his Kelly gone his minutes and touches increased. His scoring per minute increased marginally. The guys brought in to score, Askew and Clayton either didn't or just missed too much time to injury.

I suspect if you could find the team records going back that far, some of the early Cal seasons before 1920 probably didn't have anyone scoring in double digits. Scoring was really low back then. I took a look at the college basketball part of Baseball Reference, but their college basketball records only go back to the 1950s.

edit: to answer my own question, he was an assistant coach at Rhode Island but was let go (along with other assistants) when the head coach was fired a year ago.
