We have a lot of information and more to come on the head coaching search for premium subscribers.

The past four years (particularly the past two seasons) have been a low point for Bear Insider in our coverage of our Basketball Team. A big part of that was our lack of access to the program and Mark Fox's decision to not embrace any real relationships with the press at any level to cover the team, its players, and coaches. Another meaningful piece of that is our personal lack of enthusiasm for covering the program. And finding and retaining reporters who know college basketball and were interested in working with the limitations Fox had created proved to be challenging.

That said, there are a lot of reasons to believe this is all about coming back to a positive place with the hire of the new coach. There are a lot of reasons to be excited about this next chapter (much of which is outlined on a recent post on the premium boards). Bottom line is that a key criterion of this new hire is someone who embraces the fan base and catalyzes interest in the program. That will lead to more access to the press and in particular BI.

Bottom line is that if you are interested in Cal Men's Basketball, now is a good time to be a premium subscriber.

Clearly Fox was horrible for Cal from every perspective. Knowlton bears this responsibility and should be fired as well. If I had such egregiously awful results at my job, I'd be canned immediately.

Let's see. Sixty years ago the chancellor's name was I think Edward Strong. As I recall (and I was here) he ran into a bit of trouble in the Fall of 1964.

Paul Brechler was never the Chancellor at Cal. He was the athletic director at Iowa for 13 years (1947 to 1960). The person who immediately followed Strong as Chancellor was Martin Meyerson as Acting Chancellor for a short period, followed by Roger Heynes in 1965.

Controversy as Chancellor[edit]
