We have a lot of information and more to come on the head coaching search for premium subscribers.

The past four years (particularly the past two seasons) have been a low point for Bear Insider in our coverage of our Basketball Team. A big part of that was our lack of access to the program and Mark Fox's decision to not embrace any real relationships with the press at any level to cover the team, its players, and coaches. Another meaningful piece of that is our personal lack of enthusiasm for covering the program. And finding and retaining reporters who know college basketball and were interested in working with the limitations Fox had created proved to be challenging.

That said, there are a lot of reasons to believe this is all about coming back to a positive place with the hire of the new coach. There are a lot of reasons to be excited about this next chapter (much of which is outlined on a recent post on the premium boards). Bottom line is that a key criterion of this new hire is someone who embraces the fan base and catalyzes interest in the program. That will lead to more access to the press and in particular BI.

Bottom line is that if you are interested in Cal Men's Basketball, now is a good time to be a premium subscriber.

Clearly Fox was horrible for Cal from every perspective. Knowlton bears this responsibility and should be fired as well. If I had such egregiously awful results at my job, I'd be canned immediately.

Agree. Especially a disruptor who values football and men's and women's basketball. We haven't had an AD (or a Chancellor) who values those revenue-generating sports in at least 60 years.

Let's see. Sixty years ago the chancellor's name was I think Edward Strong. As I recall (and I was here) he ran into a bit of trouble in the Fall of 1964.

Paul Brechler was never the Chancellor at Cal. He was the athletic director at Iowa for 13 years (1947 to 1960). The person who immediately followed Strong as Chancellor was Martin Meyerson as Acting Chancellor for a short period, followed by Roger Heynes in 1965.

Career[edit]
Edward Strong first joined the faculty at UC Berkeley in 1932 as a lecturer, before being promoted to full professor in 1947.[3] He founded Berkeley's Department of Sociology and Social Institutions in 1946, and chaired it until 1953.[3] Strong also served for most of this period as an associate dean of the College of Letters and Science.[3] He was appointed a Vice-Chancellor in 1958, and became Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley, a role he served between 1961 and 1965.[3] While Strong was Chancellor, he helped contribute to the establishment of Berkeley's Department of Computer Science.[3] He resigned in March 1965, in large part due to his actions during the Free Speech Movement, which was beginning at that time.[3] After his resignation as Chancellor, Strong was appointed to the Mills Professorship of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy and Civil Polity, where he taught until 1967, when he retired.[3] Besides for his academic work, Strong was once president of the American Philosophical Association, and was the primary founder of the Journal of the History of Philosophy.[3] He was also instrumental in the construction of the Radiation Laboratory on Charter Hill, which morphed in to the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, which later participated in significant research into nuclear weapons.[3]

Controversy as Chancellor[edit]
Strong's tenure as Chancellor at Berkeley was marked by strife related to the free speech movement, leading to his resignation in March 1965.[3] When Strong resigned he issued a statement blaming Clark Kerr (who would be dismissed by the Board of Regents in January 1967) for "capitulating to the tide of revolt, subversive of law and order."[4] While acting as Chancellor, Strong favored harsh disciplinary policies, and was upset that Clark Kerr had made certain concessions to the "student rebels" involved in the Free Speech Movement.[4]
Strong's actions during the Free Speech Movement were harshly criticized by some students and faculty members for the approach he took to free speech activity on campus.[5]

Does the premium board indicate that a new AD will make the decision? No?

Count me skeptical.
