I made my last post on the men's basketball forum when Mark Fox was hired. I wrote that it was a terrible hire and that I was done with Cal basketball until a competent coach was hired because I refused to be in a relationship where I cared and the admin so obviously didn't. I received mostly mean-spirited responses telling me I was a fair weather fan who would not be missed or that I needed to give Mark Fox a chance. Well, Mark Fox performed exactly as he was expected to and our admin is still incompetent. However, Mark Madsen seems okay and I can tolerate following Cal basketball with an okay coach. Was he the best hire -- probably not. Does he have a ceiling because he seems unwilling to dirty his hands with aggressive recruiting and NIL -- probably. Have I been wasting my time over the past few days compulsively checking the Cal men's basketball forum for updates -- absolutely.
Our University needs to understand that its long term health and its capacity to perform as a high level public academic institution is tied to its performance in sports. And that even if they don't get that, there is still simply no excuse for administrative incompetence in any part of the University including sports.
