So now we have
Askew
Celestine
Bowser
Okafor
Newell

Incoming freshman:
Brown
Curtis

and the new players, up to 6.
That is a lot of change!

I can't decide if this is good or bad for Cal. One way or the other, we now have a major roster overhaul on our hands. It will be interesting to see who gets picked up.
This is good. VERY VERY GOOD!!!

The ones I want to stay are Celestine, Newell, Okafor, maybe Askew and sorta maybe Bowser (possible late bloomer).

Right now, this is like playing draw poker and the hand you've been dealt is so bad that you're considering drawing four cards. Well, add to that that you somehow know there are plenty of good cards still in the deck.

The crazy thing is that our starting lineup may not even be here yet.

and you get to see the cards first and have influence over which cards you get. you even get the chance to buy the cards you need

definitely want to keep Bowser

always need shooters and i think he's going to get a lot more open shots in Madsen's system

We were 3-29 last year. Even accounting for Fox, massive roster change is needed. All of this is not good news, it is great news. Now my opinion is the guys penciled in as staying need to stay, so I'm hoping for no additional attrition. But even if there is, oh well.

I find it interesting that all 3 sophs entered the portal. I'm guessing juniors Bowser and Celestine may want to stay for their degrees and the freshies were asked to stay.

FOx knew his stuff, lead asst to coach K for Olympi cteam, correct?
runner up for #1 recruit in Us,and #14 in US(stayed local w/ Vandy and Stackhouse) ,same yr

Near miss on momentum changing couple recruits at the same time that Covid forced practice w/ no 5-5 competition, outdoors, oh
and that other thing- without a basketball.

Maybe he was low on personal handling, a bit like what became his BFF- Gruden.

Sam A, if he doesn't come back, as he entered before Madsen hire, is a loss, Kawahi mini-me potential.

Next yr could be a bit of a repeat of Braun's first yr: Askew stays, Celestine 100%,Okafor takes the next step,
and we score, gulp, an "Abrams" type or 2 or 3...

Teaser-Lebron was CAL and Braun or Europe if the Clippers won the lottery and kept him...Bronny??? His list prior to unbelievably loved Laker Madsen as a playa & coach hiring is: OSU.USC,ORE.
We scored PWO son of DrJ, Steve Kerr son, Ali's grandson at tailback, done deal Bronny!!

Now that we have new coach, there is no need to bash the prior guy. Bad situation for him and is, now resolved.

There IS a need. Similar to how sometimes bullies need to be punched in the face to learn lessons, we need to make our displeasure about athletics decisions long and painful so that similar decisions aren't made in the future.

Incorrect. Blown way out of proportion: Being otherwise unemployed and a member in good standing with the coaching fraternity, he was invited to come in and work with Team USA for a couple of weeks (and I suspect it was on a volunteer basis). Something to fill the gap on the resume.

Sam A... gimme a break.

Don't fall for every Cal Basketball meme ever to appear on Bear Insider. Lebron, Nowitzki, etc...

He got paid millions to do a 1/4 a-s job. He nearly killed my interest in a program I used to love. He can take all the crap Cal fans want to give him. As Don Draper said:

IMO this is a huge blessing. Not giving anything away, but I believe you will soon see Madsen has the capability of pulling in recruits that are way over the level of Fox. The more roster flexibility, the better. Every time one of these opens, we're likely upgrading.
I think only 4 scholarship players left plus two new players. More leaving than when Fox was hired.

As nice as it would be to can the entire team after last season's results at some point you need to fill out the roster.

Maybe Madsen will talk one or two of these guys back to help give us a quality bench, but that depends on if he wants them back and what sort of roles they see for themselves.

We'll just have to see what happens.

Agreed - Sam A drop off from His first season was due in part to not fully committing to develop his game - well liked, but focus and dedication are important factors to taking the next step of basketball improvement, especially in a Power 5 level of competition. Athletic and can get hot from 3 pt line, but limited in other areas and clearly MM saw that via film study. In MM style of play more players need to be able to play uptempo - meaning handling the ball, court vision and have passing skills. Personally I hope Monte Bowers can raise his game as he is a good spot up shooter. and a quality young man. However - I would be surprised if He sees the court much (15+ minutes/game). Very limited on ball handling vs pressure, or to create his shot and also needs to greatly increase his defensive quickness and strength.

Sam: low hoops savvy and overrated athleticism... doesn't know what he doesn't know... still, wishing him the best

Bowser: i liked the way he got more and more confident the last 10 games... needs to continue that and work on his strength (looked like a true freshman last year, not a 3rd-year-in-program guy)... potential "3 and D" player

agree. I like Bowser more than most (there is usually one player that I see promise in

Freshmen/soph Lars, freshmen/soph 2K. Lars exceeded my expectation (despite his poor hands) and 2K fell a little short, but still was a solid player when you consider his defense.

Bowser has a nice catch and shoot 3, but also gets his shot off quickly and can hit a shot on the move. He also could create space with his length and quick shot to hit mid-range jumpers. There was no other Cal player with this ability

Sam can't shoot off a move and doesn't have the length. 2K couldn't hit a pull up jumper even though he could get to his spot and get his shot off. Grant has a great pull up jumper, but not yet a good enough 3 point shooter, Marcalis couldn't shoot, and Brown could only shoot if wide open

Bowser was literally the only player I thought was a good shooter (even though his stats weren't great)
