So much momentum in like a week than all of Fox' tenure. It really shows was a little energy and ambition can do from the right source. You can send this post to the Fox venting tent thread as necessary.

I am hoping that soon we will be competing for the upper 1/3 of Pac-12 which will help us forget the disaster of the last six years.

This article addresses two changes in recent years (Transfer Portal + NIL) that make college sports a paid pro sport, and associated problems with that.

We all knew this needed to happen, right? How much is the NCAA tv contract worth?

It's all about money at this point.

Bay Area is very rich.
Cal grads are both numerous and wealthy.
But how much are they will to spend on having that winning sports program?
-So far, not so much! We are not the most rabid fan base, too much other good stuff in life to enjoy, unlike in places like Lawrence Kansas or anywhere in SEC territory.

Thank you.

Wow. Being a CAL basketball fan can actually be FUN!

What a concept.

GO BEARS!!!

If you believe in forever
Then life is just a one-night stand
If there's a rock and roll heaven
Well you know they've got a hell of a band

Any-idea what some of the top 20 schools are spending on Nil? I thought our goal was 1.5 million.i got to believe we can raise more money than some places in the SEC.

Our NEAR TERM goal is $1.5m. We aren't there yet. And even then we need to get beyond that.

But bottom line the cost for us of a championship program is a fraction of what we collectively donate to Cal athletics every year. We spend eight figures through the university and we stink. We spend a couple of million through NIL and we are in the tournament.

This is not a tough calculation. Personally I'd rather spend less and win than spend more and lose.

Too many administrators, coaches, staffing, building engineers, etc taking their cuts before it goes to the players.
This is very shortsighted!!!

If you invest in players, you'll get wins.
If you get wins, you'll get ticket revenue and other associated income.
If you get additional income, all prior mentioned parties will get their money.

Quit putting the 19 year old phenoms at the bottom of your payroll structure.

Mark Madsen… how much is his salary?
How much does the AD make?
How about if someone made an example and gave a hefty donation to the "purchasing players" fund.

If Madsen wins, he'll ultimately make MORE money down the line. It's an investment in his own career. And the Department should recognize the same.

Except alums don't primarily live in the college towns. How much of the Georgia fanbase is heading to Athens from Atlanta for football games? From New Orleans up the road to BR for LSU games? Yeah, those cities have a few things to "enjoy."
Winning cures all. The Cal fanbase goes beyond the Bay Area. I make it out from New Jersey/Philly (yeah, I know, less things for me to enjoy also right?) for a yearly game. People/alums come up from SoCal when they are excited, not because they are bored.
But the Bay Area, Sacto, San Jose areas are huge population beds. Pick up even a small percentage of Cal fans (people who get on the bandwagon, not necessarily alums) and you have a great base.
Winning and marketing. I worry about that a lot more than whether a Cal alum is going to go to the Wine country for the day vs. going to Strawberry Canyon.
This excuse needs to be retired.

If you are implying Madsen should make that donation this is silly to an extreme. He is an employee. He has no ownership interest in anything. Why would he risk his salary for some theoretical bigger payday down the line...where, oh by the way, having seen him do it once the next school would likely expect him to donate his salary to players again.

It is up to us fans and alumni to donate funds that are made available to players. Beyond that, as an employee of the university and HC of the team he is likely prohibited from giving to that fund; the university cannot pay players.

Correct - Madsen actually brought it up that He would like to donate from His salary to the NIL Collective Fund (This guy gets it and is all in!) However He quickly was told that NCAA regulations prohibit it from being done. I can't speak to donations to the dept and how the various cuts/deductions are done, but for the NIL collective the monies are Very efficient in the net amount doled out to the players. I'm four plus hours away and like to hit a few games each year, visit with friends and reminisce a bit. Well, I used to until the last guy made things so unfun I quit. Fun is a huge plus. Competitiveness helps. A really good team would probably motivate me to make more trips.

I disagree re too many coaches. Investing in coaches, good coaches increases your chance of winning and you should be funding every coaching position well enough to get good people at every position.

Don't be looking to coaches to fund your NIL. That's not even legal. The point is, contribution to the NIL directly affects winning in a positive fashion. Contributions to the Athletic Department do not, as we have seen, so if you want to maximize the impact of your dollar donate it to the Legends campaign.

Maybe Madsen can contribute to the Caliber fund. I understand that fund will directly benefit the team/players and Madsen as coach can decide on how the money is spent

+1 and as per a post I saw some time ago, the folks running the collective self-fund the administrative/operating fees so that the dollars donated go straight to players, no skin off to be siphoned away for bureaucracy.
