I was not speaking to the practicality of the size but the ambiance. Haas has been good on a number of occasions but never had the dramatic home court feel of Harmon Gym. I think it was Ed Gray who hit the game winning free throws. 96-97 team was sooo good. Ed Gray, Shareef, Anwar McQueen, Tony Gonzalez and the Duck starting 5. Such a fun team.
One other favorite was the win against Villanova - I took a colleague to the game (he attended Marquette when Marquette was really good) and he couldn't believe the environment.
And the close student seats did help Cal win games. Indeed, the late Dave Ross (Referee Guy) got a USC player kicked out in a game when Dave was, um, verbally harassing the player on an in-bounds play (and, um, maybe holding on to the players shirt but that happened not infrequently) and the player turned around and spit on Dave. Dave got irate and chased the player. When order was restored, Dave got to stay and the player was ejected.
I remember that game. The students were really riding Lavin but I can't recall why. Earl Watson was interviewed afterward and said he was envious of the atmosphere. Students weren't required to be moved off the floor when Haas opened, just back a certain amount of feet. I don't see any Udub students right on the in-bounds line in your photo like what going on at Harmon, which is likely a reason they didn't get the memo. I'm talking about the more recent changes. First the students were closer to the court but moved back due to the courtside seats. I believe they were moved back again and the student rows reduced more when they added the second row of courtside seats
And then look behind the baskets. The seats went down to the floor. Football players sat with their feet on the court. Again, maybe this change was so they could put courtside seats there also.

This - they royally screwed up the continuity of the student section, and also mixin other confused fans who complain when students are standing and loud and noisy. One thing all of us can do, outside of getting those extra $$ to the NIL collective, is to show up. Some of my favorite memories growing up was a PACKED Haas, going to games with my dad and grandpa. the team fed off the pure energy of the crowd.
I also never got to experience midnight madness, so if someone sees MM on the street, let him know we want it back.

I might be mistaken but I'm almost positive the student section was right on the floor with no barrier the first year we returned to Haas. I was a student in 1999 and remember being able to practically defend the opposing teams sideline inbounds passes. Create some fancy "VIP seating" somewhere else and use that and the gratitude for them helping California Basketball to lure big-shot alums from that area. One possibility might be to limit those courtside seats to the area at mid-court, and have students take the sideline area closer to each basket.

I'm sorry, but I would get rid of the row of courtside seats. This isn't the NBA. I know, some people with $$$ like to be big shots and sit courtside (and they probably donate), but I would find some other excellent seats for them and bring the students as close as possible to the action.
The conference hates fun!
Pretty sure that lasted one year before they put the row of seats in.
So we all agree: remove the courtside chairs and move the student section back to where it was when Haas first opened.
Some folks who sit in those courtside seats might not agree... but I don't care; it's for the best.
Double the donation for the remaining seats. This team is worth it and the impact of rabid fans cannot be overstated

The Student Section should be opposite the cameras, TV booths and VIP seats. I'm pretty sure the VIP seats will generate more revenue if the owners will be watching an exciting, winning team in a packed Haas with a great and loud student section.

I've sat down with the Cal Assoc AD with a list of FB and BB game day experience suggestions. Many were what I called 'low hanging fruit' (easy, and low to very low cost to implement).movielover said:

Which you can do if you are not so stupid as to have the cameras on the same side as the students.

the assoc AD listened carefully, liked many of my suggestions, commented on a few, and said he'd get back to me on which ones they got done
I don't remember exactly because this was pre-covid, but he left maybe 6 months later so I never heard back. The only think I know they implemented because of my suggestion was to setup a small stand in Haas to sell Cal stuff at games, although the location they put it was bad.
I've engaged JK and another Assoc AD a few times more via email and know at least one of my suggestions were discussed but again I don't think they were implemented (they did add some star basketball players displays/wall paintings in the Haas hallways, but probably not due to my suggestions)
one example is tailgate town (terrible name) for pre-game. Not much there.
So I made suggestions how to improve by inviting one student group per game. afterwords they did have a different student group for two games (one was a rocket club).
another suggestion was to invite one community group to have a booth each game and suggested several who I spoke at Solano Stroll. all of the groups had a Cal affiliation such as Lawrence Hall of Science and Berkeley OLLI and they were interested, providing their contact info to me.
Cal responded by saying they liked the idea but were already "booked" for the season. therefore I followed up before this season and they said they didn't need the contacts so I assume they just didn't like the idea
the only real positive response I've gotten back that sounds promising is restoring the continuous student benches along the sidelines which I view as one of my personal Cal hoops missions.

You know what would be interesting to see (if they even exist): aerial views of the court and the student section, from Harmon, to the first year(s) of Haas, through today. Evidence of our descent into corporate hell. Could even be stills from TV broadcasts.
Bring back the $million scoreboard that was built for Haas, but wouldn't fit under the correctly reengineered roof structure!
