sounds like a bad idea ... will teams want to put out maximum effort for a meaningless tournament?

I guess teams that aren't in the post-season hunt might, but others?

It might have been better if they didn't divide it into conferences. But really, the reason the European soccer tournaments work is that there are multiple leagues participating or multiple levels. It's fun to see a team from the Championship bear a Premier League team in the FA Cup. Here, this is merely a distraction in an already long season.

I don't see the point of this "tournament" unless it's to pull viewers away from watching NCAA men's basketball which will be getting underway at that time and generally offers a significant number of marquee matchups.

just trying to make the regular season less of a bore. Anyone who has Warriors season tickets knows that you often can't even get face value for selling tickets to a Nov or Dec game given their unimportance. But the key will be what the marquis players do during this tourney - will they all go full out to win, or will they treat it like a time to rest their bodies and give time to new players yearning for experience...

Do these games count in the standings?

Every game in this tournament except the final counts in the regular season standings.

Quote:

All 67 games across both stages of the In-Season Tournament will count toward the regular-season standings except the Championship. Each team will continue to play 82 regular-season games in the 2023-24 season, including those games that are part of Group Play and the Knockout Rounds.

Yet another money grab. They're copying Euro pro soccer with all the different tournaments that run concurrently with each country's pro season. Example: UEFA Champions League.

Makes sense in soccer because it's different levels and/or different leagues. This is lame.

Also European soccer leagues do not have playoffs. So once a team is not at the top or the bottom its games are inconsequential. A Cup can be something to play for.

What I think would make sense would be for the tournament to be an extension of the play in games for entering the playoffs. That could be the stakes. Better yet would be to invite teams from all over the world and have a real club championship.

Now that'd be cool.
