He's one of the expenses.

It is most definitely about football, in the sense that that's where most of the money comes in, and quite a bit goes out. If football was not on the table, college athletics would be MUCH smaller and less semi professional (for good or bad, depending on your point of view).

Said Cronin:

"It's unfair to say football's the problem. They've been the answer."

He has a point there. Football sustains itself.

Maybe universities should be thinking about if they really need all those other sports and if they do want them then finding alternate ways to fund them. Student fees. Participation fees. Academic subsidies. Solely donor funded.

Football is the goose that lays golden eggs and athletic departments are killing it by taking revenues from it and using them elsewhere.
