"Madsen will not be the doormat of any conference."

Just to be clear, I said there was "the danger" of being the doormat, but I totally agree that Mad Dog will bite Jon Scheyer's leg off before he lets that happen. All early signs are good on the coaching and recruiting front, and getting into the ACC kind of guarantees that Madsen sticks around even if the team has a couple difficult seasons.

Cautionary tale: As a native St. Louisan I'm also a Mizzou fan (sort of). They joined the SEC in 2012 thinking this would be great for all the reasons we think joining the ACC will be great. 11 years later, still a doormat regularly getting crushed by Bama and Auburn. 11 years in and still tough to recruit for either bball or football when you're always second (or third) fiddle in the conference standings.

I'm rooting for Dennis Gates

I don't see a reason we should be a doormat in this era of NIL, with a good coach, more commitment to revenue sports ......
Therein lies the problem. At Cal, we have neither.
Remains to be seen on the court, but I'm impressed by Madsen and I don't see any basis for your conclusion.

My bad, I should have been clearer. I was referring to Wilcox, not Madsen. I'm optimistic about Madsen.

For football, a lot will depend on the schedule and what division we end up in (or if the ACC abandons divisions). UNC went 9-4 (6-2) and won the Coastal Division despite being #48 in Sagarin (7th best team in the ACC). By comparison they would have been the 8th best team in the PAC-12, just behind WSU and ahead of Cal.

According to Sagarin, last year Florida State was their 2nd best team at #18. The PAC-12 had 5 teams: Utah, Oregon, USC, OSU and UW that all rated higher.

Oregon State is really getting screwed.

They dropped divisions for this season and are doing a a 3-5-5 schedule (well until more realignment). 3 permanent 'rivals' and then you rotate playing the other 10 schools every other year in groups of 5, for 8 conference games Championship game top two teams by winning percentage.

Yes, so one possibility is we play Stanford and SMU every year and 6 of the other 14. So who is in that 6 will make a huge difference year to year. According to Sagarin, only 1 of 14 ACC teams was better than Oregon State last year. So with the right schedule, winning records should be achievable even without significant improvement.

Basketball will be fun no matter what. Last year, Sagarin rated the PAC-12 #5 just ahead of the ACC #6, but clearly the ACC has more storied programs top to bottom.
