My prediction is there will be two variations with Askew and Newell depending on the size of the team
- G Jalen Cone
- G Devin Askew or Keonte Kennedy
- G Keonte Kennedy or Jaylon Tyson
- F Jaylon Tyson or Grant Newell
- F/C Fardaws Aimaq

I expect Jalen Celestine and Rodney Brown to play key roles too

Based on a couple Utah Valley games I watched in the NIT last year, Madsen definitely goes 10-11 deep with 'line changes' to keep the pace up. That means a couple other guys (maybe the Euro freshman and someone else) will definitely get some run.

No way in the world that Tyson does NOT start, in my opinion.

Yeah, the only question I have is whether Madsen plays him at the 3 and goes big or at the 4 and goes small.

Exactly - Tyson killed it in the inner squad scrimmage last week. Can play both positions and has the highest pro potential on the team. Gonna be fun to watch the style, skill and pace of the game this season. Need Celestine to be completely healthy as He can certainly be the "X" factor, if He can go full speed for back to back days.

As mentioned before, "starting" isn't necessarily as significant as minutes. My only question with jfox projection is that I don't think Grant will be part of the "or" category. His minutes will be near the top of the list.

People here say his waiver was approved. As far as as I know, there is no ncaa site where you can check.

The BI video interview of Madsen suggests there is a starting five and a 7 person rotation.
Seems like:
Tyson, Cone, Kennedy, Askew and Aimaq with Newell and Okafor in the rotation.

Not sure who the people here are exactly, but those who would know say although it is expected there has been no official word passed down by the NCAA.

Are there some scrimmages lined up with other teams?

My own guess, based on zero inside info:

Normal: Cone, Kennedy, Tyson, Newell, Aimaq

Small: Askew in for Newell

Big: Celestine in for Cone

Other variations to suit the situation.

I agree with most but don think celestine starts over cone in any circumstance.

Maybe Askew or Brown in for Cone then? It's hard for me to find a place for Cone in a big lineup.

My idea with Celestine was positionless basketball with everyone 6'6" or more being able to guard almost every position.

Coach will have Cone in the line up as much as possible regardless of match ups - He is that good and the best shooter on the team. Great leader and the team looks up to him. Jerome Randle like, is the hoped for comparision. Agree on Celestine as staff wants him 100% healthy, given his shooting and ability to play multiple positions - so when healthy He is in the top 7. Askew thus far has accepted his role and is playing at a better level than last season. But it only counts when the games begin!

twice and the energy level, conditioning and skill level is very good. Team seems to be tight with each other and all the coaches are really hands on. Much higher level of multiple coach involvement than previously. Hopefully the guys stay healthy, as the first 7 are really playing at a high level and even the 8-10 will occasionally see the floor.

@4thGenCal sometime X'd that they heard we lost to Boise State by 15 in a scrimmage? True? If so any initial concerns? Scrimmage usually means nothing, but perhaps helps us to identify glaring things we have to work on early. On perhaps we need to downgrade our ambitions a little?

Boise is an experienced and a great defensive team.

Perfect for a scrimmage.

Goals:

Get us back to earth
Find our weaknesses
Learn how to cope with some adversity.

Boise is likely bound for the tournament
So no shame in losing to them anyhow.

I've seen it at all levels -- there are coaches that not only play everyone in scrimmages or pre-season just to see (and with Madsen that would make sense with a totally new team) but also sandbag for the regular season.

Boise was #37 in Ken Pom last year. #71 O and #28 D

Cal was #270 with the #320 O and #195 D (and #343 in pace!)

Boise would have been the third best team in the PAC-12 last year behind only UCLA and Arizona. There is nothing inconsistent with losing to them, scrimmage or otherwise, and believing Cal can be a middle of the conference team or better.

The biggest concern is Tyson appeal not yet being resolved. We need a public shaming campaign against the NCAA if they don't get their act together and get this approved before the season starts. Dragging it out like this is unacceptable.

What is the basis for the waiver request? Does he have a good case? He is from Plano, Texas, played for Texas, transferred to Texas Tech and now has transferred to Cal. I really want him to be eligible this season but I am wondering how strong our case is?

Interesting article discussing the situation:
https://theathletic.com/4450771/2023/04/26/college-basketball-transfers-ncaa-waiver/?amp=1

"Now, a waiver request must meet one of three criteria: mental health, exigent circumstances outside the student's control (such as "physical or sexual assault or discrimination based on a protected class") or assertions involving diagnosed education-impacting disabilities."

Racial speech by fired coach at his last location. I read he has a good chance but then the ncaa has only approved 18% of double transfers. Since we are Cal, I assume the worst and hope to be surprised.
