It wasn't all that secret, especially on the paid side.

Given the overreaction to the first one, I suspect they'll keep a tighter lid on the next one.

Well what did happen in that scrimmage?

A few things. First, Boise was 24-10, a 10 seed, the #37 team in Ken Pom last year.

Cal was #270

Now it is a completely different Cal team this year, but they have not played together in a game yet. Boise was in the Tournament earlier this year.

Plus, reports are we did not have Tyson, who if eligible will be our best player.

That said, I hope people do not have unreasonable expectations this year, There is a lot of talent in the PAC-12, the media poll picked us at #11, SI recently picked us at #8. I don't want to put a ceiling on this team but think #5 is a reasonable optimistic prediction 16 to 18 wins and the NIT would be a great result for a program that went 3-29 last year.

My simple expectation is that we win five times the number of games we won last season. Reasonable?

Yes, plus we play a fun high scoring style, the players look like they are having fun, the crowds come back to Haas, we are competitive in most games and the post game interviews are entertaining and positive,

These things are usually controlled, have different rules, and not in any way a real game setting.

Like for scrimmages I have seen in high school baseball, 7 batters go up each inning. You can theoretically get 7 outs, or no outs, whatever. Also, the coaches try to get everyone in, or give reps to those they want to get more looks from, and even sand bag (not show anything). It's super low leverage, everyone trying to get reps.

Now if lose to St. Thomas by 15, that would start to concern me, but even then I would chalk it up to a completely refreshed roster and needing some time to gel. We'll get a better picture of who we really are by mid-OOC in my opinion.

It wasn't that type of scrimmage.

Many programs will have a scrimmage that resembles a game with officials, score keeping, timers, maybe even televised or with spectators. This was not that.

There are also scrimmages where two coaches know each other and set up certain situations and objectives (i.e. we want to work on breaking a press). Baskets are made, but that is usually not the point of the scrimmage. I believe this was the type of scrimmage with Boise St. So stats are irrelevant.

the fact that we are sorta obsessing about a scrimmage for the first time in 4 years really shows how Mark Fox took the programs to depths fans never have experienced before.
