The Bears are just eight days away from opening the season in an exhibition game.

They continue to hold open scrimmages for donors and former players. Before the USC game, there was good attendance including Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher, Rod Benson, and Richard Midgely.

I had a chance to chat with Christopher who said that Madsen has re-connected him with Cal and that this season will be the first time he's seen a game in Haas since they won the P12 title.

Lots of praise for the improved talent on the floor and the NBA style of play Madsen is running on offense.

The team had an off day shooting the ball though the defense has improved since I last viewed them. Better closeouts, and helpside defense. In particular, everything at the rim was being contested/double-teamed.

Three 2025 recruits were in the house (more on that later on the premium side).

Jaylon Tyson - A couple of interesting facts. Since the NCAA tightened the rules on two-time transfer waivers, 0% of the initial Waivers have been granted. The 18% that have been approved have ALL come on appeal.

The press done on Friday and the reaction to that coverage is but a taste of what the NCAA will get if the appeal is denied.

Great updates, BearGreg! I haven't been this excited for a basketball season to start in a long, long time.

I am most pleased to hear the connections Madsen is facilitating with former Cal players, as this can only yield positive results.

I feel terrible for Tyson, this has to be beyond frustrating for him, the rest of the team and human decency.

This is very strange. So everyone who applied for a waiver with-held vital information until denied? Or the Ncaa is sending a message that two time transfers need not apply unless they want to go through hell. Or there is a separate appeals committee that actually looks at the information rather than just denying everything.
Go Bears!

Tyson will be a very rich man after suing the NCAA if they don't grant this waiver.

Thanks.

If the NCAA is going to automatically deny every initial waiver request you would think they could get through them more quickly.

The NCAA would be effectively quoting to Tyson the same scripture as Adams quoted to him and metaphorically saying "We can spit on you whenever we want to."

Does anyone understand why the NCAA has not suspended Adams? That seems like an even easier call that allowing Tyson to play. Was there any kind of investigation?

kinda funny in a sad way that the names of the 2025 prospects are not mentioned

does the bearinsider.com really think that zero discussion of recruits by fans is gonna help the bears in recruiting when these same prospects along with their families, coaches & friends (usually teammates) can all read fun multi page threads re: their amazing skillsets, etc on other team's fan boards?

realize that selling premium memberships is a priority (it's understood that this is a biz) but how does running a public board that got zero recruiting discussions is gonna create energy, sell gameday tixs & facilitate recruiting?

this is not cal's monster class#

If you're a pesky bureaucrat the last-minute denial is deliberate; the appeal becomes moot if the appeal can be delayed past the start of the season.

It may not get him on the court soon enough but what makes it moot?

They will decide by the end of this week, most likely. Being Cal, I am not optimistic
Go Bears!

Philosophically, yes appealing isn't moot. But if they delay in responding to the appeal such that he misses most or all of the season, then he still loses.

So start a new thread with the names and what you know. This board is for sharing and discussing Cal Basketball.

Curious, don't you pay for premium accounts at Rivals and 247 though not here? How do they help Cal in recruiting or otherwise?

And that despite the fact that BearInsider donates every dollar of profit we make and then some to Cal athletics each and every year and have been since their inception and continue to be the primary catalyst for the Cal Legends Collective and the Caliber Football fund.

How does that make sense?

And I'd be interested to learn about which other teams' fan sites have recruiting info available for non-premium users?

As for zero discussion on recruiting, perhaps you missed this article which was an exclusive for BI that we posted for free? Victorious

And we would love to see as much recruiting discussion here as folks want. Players use social media to discuss offers all the time which can be fodder for good conversations.

North Carolina has a football player, Tez Walker, who was initially denied eligibility this year by the NCAA because he had transferred twice. Walker won his appeal and was allowed to play this season, after missing UNC's first four games.

Not as good as the NCAA doing the right thing the first time, but much better than missing the entire season.

that would be cal's monster class which remains today the most read thread in the history of college basketball fan message boards

good luck with ur non inclusive premium recruiting strategy in signing mcdonalds all americans like jaylen brown who read cal's monster class every day during his senior year of high school & selling out haas while creating energy for the bears

Lately I have been thinking through whether Cal needs more NIL money or more hot message board threads to sign 5 star basketball recruits. I have also come to the conclusion it is more hot message board threads. Let's go guys!

sluggo, the last 6 years since cal's monster class are 100% conclusive empirical evidence re: the best strategy for moving the cal basketball forward on an upward trajectory

unfortunately greg don't see it that way too

reality is that if the monster wuz not terminated thru censorship then shocky would be personally fundraising nil funds from all available sources including nba ballers, new fans & myself that would be literally 1000% greater than the current nil fundraising, this isn't my problem anymore

I think coach Martin deserves credit for the upward trajectory and Fox and Wyking for the downward. Now with Mark Madsen we are going up baby! Please share what you read on those other boards with us about BASKETBALL. You know how excited we get with newly posted topics about players.

I am not interested in golf in this area.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, in the words of Shocky, excuses are for losers. It was not Greg who held you back.

Cal basketball is on a great upward trajectory. Somehow without your support.

2023 attendance:

st thomas: 3066
pacific: 3195 (including shocky in the haas)
cal state bakersfield: 2628

sluggo, bluesaxe & basketball bear/bear greg: wut's ur enlightened premium insider take on the attendance thus far this season at haas?

between markeisha's failed marketing decision to not include all students with FREE tixs to all games (the $125 student pass is far beyond the financial means of those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds) and zero successful outreach to those without berkeley affiliations (bay area residents that luv basketball that are priced out of golden state warriors gamedays at chase) & the bearinsider.com's non inclusive strategy with respects to building energy around the basketball program via recruiting (do u really think that any high school prospects read this board?) and unwillingness to call out knowlton (read the monster comments re: his direct conversation with lisa & doug goldman re: the basketball practice facility not moving forward anytime soon) attendance is actually worser than the wyking & fox eras

creating energy around a program & cultivating a larger haas gameday fan base is far more complicated than just winning more basketball games, got it?

I like how I am now a premium fat cat. Funny. I post mostly on this board. But I am happy to support the great work of Greg and Jim and the team.

I know nothing about marketing, which won't stop me from commenting.
1. I see a massive decrease of fan support for college basketball when I flip through the channels. I don't have stats, but it can't be just Cal.
2. It is more difficult to bring people back than to keep the people you have. Two disastrous, only at Cal, hirings and six years of failure has set the stage.
3. I agree with free tickets for students. That is a no brainer. It creates atmosphere and is an investment in the future.
4. There seems like a niche for people who want to see live basketball but can't afford the Warriors. I have no idea how to reach these people. Low price and stuff like after game concerts are my first thoughts.

The right coach is in place, and there is real talent this year. This ACC may be good for basketball marketing. I hope attendance gets better.

I've always been somewhat skeptical about the feasibility of turning abandoned Raider fans into Cal fans, but I really think this can work for Cal basketball vis a vis East Bay Warrior fans. .
Reasons:
  • Better Accessibility: Haas is closer to BART than CMS. Also, shorter games should make basketball more popular with families as the time commitment is less.
  • Improved experience vs TV: Basketball in-person vs TV is dramatically better than football. You hear the shoes squeak and the ball bounce on the floor. You hear the crowd noise bounce off the ceiling.
  • Ability to link with players: No helmets. No shoulder pads. Once you know their faces, you don't need to look at a basketball player's jersey for a name/number.

But to attract families, Cal basketball has to be reasonably priced, and some crowd giveaways for kids wouldn't hurt. Or how about discount coupons as a joint promotion with a local chain restaurant like Nations Hamburgers?

This thread isn't going much of anywhere, so I don't feel bad about hijacking it.
The above is a good video! Being a Boomer, Kanye West is not on my short-list, but I liked it particularly because of Shirley Bassey singing "Diamonds Are Forever". But for those of us of a certain age, Shirley is forever linked to "Goldfinger", the first James Bond film we ever saw and always the benchmark. It wasn't cool to own her music in the '70s and '80s - but I can appreciate both her voice and her performance value now:

Below are clips from 1974 when she was 37 and 2022 when she was 85! I hope we all age half as well:
