A third of the way to last year's win total. Roll on you Bears!

I hope we don't see that team again anytime soon.

Let's go CSUN.

Nice to see Bowser finish the game!

I didn't arrive until halftime and was shocked to see us up by just 1 and Cone with 0 points. It looked like St Thomas was playing much better defense - they made us look pretty disorganized. Good thing we got tough in the last couple of minutes.

If we weren't down 2 starters, no way it would have been this close. Still hoping for Tyson, but sucks to see Meadows with the big cast.

Think Meadows didn't stay; That was Kennedy. What is his status?

Lotta sunshine pumping here. Gonna get phonebooth'd a lot this year if we're barely edging out W's over the likes of St Thomas

What happened in corner just now?

Whose ball?
St. Thomas called timeout (play is under review for a foul, there should be one as the player was poked in the eye inadvertently after calling timeout. No foul after review)

15.8 seconds left.
At Haas we thought the player was faking the eye injury

That was the most entertaining Cal hoops game in years! This should be a fun season. Great effort. Go Bears!

Sounds like our floor announcer is mispronouncing Celestine.

Announcers said it's been pronounced incorrectly. The correct pronunciation is ce-LES-tine. Sounds weird, but as long as he keeps playing like he did tonight, I'm happy to pronounce it any way he wants. JC didn't just pick up where he left off, he elevated his level of play. Good for him. He appears bulked up a bit, but also has a slight soft layer that he'll probably shed later in the season.

With out 3 starters in second half we were playing lots of freshman and Bowser

I doubt they would have gotten that much run with 3 starters playing

All played solid, but defensively they were out of place a lot or bit on shot fakes or over helped too much

The thing about Celestine was he was probably our best defender too

You mean if we're without Tyson, Kennedy and Newell all year.

Dude relax. It's one game without three of our best players. How about we wait at least a few games first?

Back from the game:
Attendace will improve.
We need the players who were out to be in.
The Tommies hitting their threes made for a tough opener.
Kinda tough games for Cone and Askew. Combo guards…
We will need to be quicker on D, both interior and exterior.

Three of our best players out, and Newell out for more than an entire half.

Cone is gonna do some damage when he gets comfortable. It took him awhile but you saw that he is the new microwave.

We have multiple scoring options now -- Fardaws, Celestine, Newell, Cone, Askew, and when they come back -- Tyson and Kennedy.

The role players made impacts -- Monty, Vlad, Okafor, Brown (dude looks pretty confident if not raw lol), etc. This team is nice.

I didn't see much of the promised pace and spacing tonight, at least not before 8:30. I'm expecting that to improve as our players get more game time together.

Celestine was supposed to be a question mark for the rotation. Either that was way off, or our expected starters are REALLY good. Jc looked real nice tonight. Stroke was perfect, as always, but (as HoopDreams noted) he also showed aggressiveness and strength we hadn't seen so much of before. Crazy to see that kind of performance in first game in over a year. Very exciting and very happy for him.

I don't need to relax. I was at the game and I'm happy with the win. Just don't tell me that was a damn good team. They shot well, but our perimeter D was close to awful (a Cal tradition). If we did better there, we win by 15-20

I'm with you. Obviously a work in progress and glad they pulled out the win, but that was pretty sobering. What troubles me was the athleticism of the two teams looked fairly comparable. Madsen has his work cut out for him this year in what is a very stacked PAC-12.

Love that the camera cut to Madson after the first make of the 1&1. The look of relief on his face was priceless!
