This is not a good look. And the stands only seem half full

Harmon seated about 6000 and provided unmatched atmosphere. Words can't convey it, you had to be there.

The Maui invitational used to be in a little gym and we played there. I think the ones last year in Florida were a tiny venue too.

This is becoming very common.
Maui classic is in the Maui Convention center. It's a HS gym. These are TV events. Fans usually can't travel to Hawaii and the Bahamas etc. this tourney is in its third year. They're not banking on attendance. TV is paying the freight.

Watch any tournament game this weekend. Most are in small gyms.

IIRC, Harmon Gym seated about 6600. And yes, you had to be there. It was glorious!

That's the way these holiday tournaments go. Venue is not the thing but the setting in resort areas like SJC.

Except that we have thousands of alums within a short drive to SJC and only a few bothered to go to the game. If the venue was packed it would have looked ok.

How well did the AD publicize that fact to our SoCal alumni?

The late tip-off times were absurd.

Bobo, you're out to lunch here. It was an honor for all of us, anyone who played basketball in Harmon, no matter what age or what level of play we played, to play there. It was typical Cal in its day: the public university, but available to all. It was like a shrine of college basketball, but it was also used for college intramural contests, high school, and pickup games.

Harmon was the Mecca of Bay Area basketball, and in its heyday in the 1950s, when the Bay Area had the best college teams in the nation, it also had the many of the best high school teams and players in the nation. The Tournament of Champions was held at Harmon Gym, and pitted the best high school teams in Northern California against each other. High school teams and players all had the dream of playing in the famous Harmon Gym, but very few ever made it there. Harmon was so revered that players of high school, college, or of playground fame, came from all over the Bay Area just to play in pickup games in the afternoons, before the mighty Cal Bears took the floor for daily practice. Great players and great teams played there. Both high school and college All-Americans, and NBA Hall of Famers.

Here is a history of the Tournament of Champions (TOC) in the Harmon Gym:

I watched the last 5 minutes of the second half and the two overtimes of the Stanford-Arkansas game last night. I think it was the Atlantis tournament. The people of Atlantis have a tiny arena that probably doesn't seat more than 2,000 people. The ceiling looked so low I wondered if length of the court passes ever hit it,

If you have to play in a high school gym then why not Mater Dei up the road?
