16-9 now. Lotsa missed shots
We match up better with Tulane they don't have a lot of bigs. Daws can take over.Bear8995 said:
12 turnovers in the first half. I think that is just who this team is. While Madsen wants to play fast, I think we are playing too fast for our current capabilities. IMHO it has nothing to do with Askew's absence, other than the fact that Askew tends to hang on to the ball a lot when he is in the game and slows the tempo of the offense down (perhaps he is on to something with re: to the tempo). We make some really poor decisions, like dribbling into double teams and trying to dribble drive against a zone. A good number of our guys are just not very good ball handlers under pressure so they shouldn't be dribbling as much as they are. It seems like Madsen currently values playing fast over protecting the ball. Perhaps he is hoping we will learn to to play at this tempo and turn the ball over less. We'll see.
Our offense has more movement and rhythm tonight but goes through dry spells. Tulane is less athletic than UTEP and doesn't shoot well from the perimeter. Still too many blow bys for my liking (our close outs are just plain poor). BearGreg's assessment has been spot on so far.
I'd attribute the turnovers more to sloppy play than to fast play. Many are just fumbles, strips, and bad passes. Also Tulane doesn't play bad defense.Bear8995 said:

My point is that we are sloppy because we are playing too fast for our abilities. Like the game being too fast for a QB so he throws interceptions and incompletions. When things are too fast, one makes bad decisions, throws panicky passes, etc.stu said:I'd attribute the turnovers more to sloppy play than to fast play. Grant looks very tentative. Like he doesn't know what to do. And he is playing soft. Nice to see him knock down that 3. Hopefully that gives him some confidence. I agree Larson gives us more right now.KoreAmBear said:We match up better with Tulane they don't have a lot of bigs. Daws can take over.Bear8995 said:

What has happened to Grant after coming out like gangbusters the first game? Larson should start over him until he gets right. He's too good to be like this.
Pav is a good passer, a poor shooter, and borderline D-1 type player. I think his defense is D-1 quality though and he could get better on offense.
We just need to grind out wins, ugly or not, until we get our cavalry back.

Larson!
Grant is lost right now. Sad to see.ncbears said:
Tyson made an excellent bounce pass towards Newell who was going to the basket along the baseline - only to have Newell stop inexplicably and the ball wen tout of bounds. That was not too fast.
Transition defense needs work too. We are letting them dribble the length of the court and then get a layup.Gkhoury2325 said:
The Cal perimeter defenders are terrible keeping players in front of them and allow the Tulane players to penetrate to easily in the paint. Too many easy shots.
We are shooting much better tonight from deep, but need to find easy buckets. Have to extend the lead.
