Glad the football guys are in the Independece Bowl. Only a 15 minute overlap with the Ole Miss basketball game as opposed to almost simultaneous games with the LA bowl.

Yes I've got picture in picture but I prefer the games one at a time.

Yup sounds like Calapalooza on 12/16.

Speaking of TV, why is the Cal home game v. UCSD at 2pm (12/20) on a Wed? Is it some ESPN all day basketball thing?

Most likely to give the players extra time off for Christmas. Their next game is scheduled for 12/29.
A similar situation for Cal WBB. Their game is at 2 pm on 12/21 and next one is on 12/29.

So play at 2pm on a Wednesday when a lot of people are working, instead of 7pm when the AD might pick up a few extra attendees and few extra bucks. Of course that extra 5 hours over a one week period is going to make a real big difference in the players "rest" time and holiday time. Now if they had a game scheduled for that Thursday or Friday night I could see it......

Whine so early in the morning??

I'd venture to say that quite a few people in the Bay Area have that week off from work and school. Check the malls.

Didn't mean to whine. You have a good point. Honestly I don't care whether the game is at 2 or 7 as long as the Bears win!

And so long as you've got a DVR, then when there are commercials in that last 15 minutes of the basketball game, you can start the football game, flip back to basketball after two and a half minutes, and so on, and once basketball is over, you can catch up in the football game pretty quickly with commercials or other dead time. On, if you don't like that, just wait until basketball is over, start the football game, and with commercials you'll be caught up before halftime.

For those who would only be watching on TV anyway, the Independence Bowl is definitely better than the LA bowl (and it will be more fun beating Texas Tech and Boise St., too). I probably would have gone to the LA bowl, but at least now I can watch the Ole Miss game live.

I'm weird that way. I have no problem recording regular shows but when it comes to sports, I always have a strange feeling inside when I'm not watching a game live. It's just not the same. Maybe its because I've been following sports for sixty years. The ironic thing is that majority of what I watch is on Direct TV and I know that techically even that isn't "live", my feed may be sixty seconds behind real time, but at least it feels live to me.

Most important thing on the 16th is getting two W's.

It means getting home a day earlier because a 7pm game would mean they'd have to leave the next day.

Some people will b-tch about anything.

Sorry about the b-tching, but I've been reading a lot of b-tching on this board for multiple years, about Knowlton and the Athletic Department in general. (I never felt it was neccessary to point that out or throw out the b-tching tag since this is a site where people express their opinions.) My b-tching about the AD in this case just happened to be a bit more specific.

And heaven forbid that a 20 year old getting a free scholarship to throw a ball into a basket and in some cases under NIL being compensated financially, would either have to wait a day or take a red eye flight, in order for one of the very sources that makes these benefits possible accumulate a few extra bucks. Come to think of it, I don't even have any inside information on how many players are driving somewhere, flying somewhere, or literally staying on campus. Oh well.

Hot damn, man. The disdain you hold for the players who entertain you is palpable.

I never indicated nor do I have any disdain for any Cal player whatsoever. I'm sure that the vast majority of them are fine young men, just like the rest of the Cal student body. Not sure what gives you that idea. My only point was that maybe there was a chance for the athletic department they play for to realize a little more revenue, (which I freely admit might not even be true.) I don't think even think that they themselves would consider it a hardship whether their vacation time before Christmas day was 3 full days or 2 1/2 days.

Initially it was SFCBear that brought up the entire question of why the game that day was being played at 2pm, not myself. When someone brought up players' time off I gave an opinion based on the trade off of possible revenue vs. an extra half day of their personal lives. You feel I b-tched about it, I thought I was giving an opinion. That's all.

You're not sure what gives me that idea? When you say things about our athletes that are dripping with sarcasm like...

Quote:

Of course that extra 5 hours over a one week period is going to make a real big difference in the players "rest" time and holiday time

and...

Quote:

...it conveys to the reader that you could not care less about the athletes' happiness or wants or desires. It conveys that, to you, they are merely an entertainment commodity; that they are here for your amusement and that your desire to see them "throw a ball into a basket" is more important than anything else going on in their life.

That all gives me the idea that you have disdain for them.

No, what that means is when someone decides I'm "b-tching "about preventing these particular students having to sacrifice a freakin' extra half day of Christmas vacation you would think that this inconvenience would be a traumatic experience for them. My specific description of these guys was extreme, only to emphasize that these players are recipients of benefits that many Cal students, and many more applicants to the school that were not even admitted, are not receiving. Like most things in life, certain benefits come with responsibility and reciprocation, like sacrificing a half day of personal vacation time that those who do not receive these benefits are able to enjoy.

I'm sorry you didn't realize that my description of the players was an exaggerated reaction to your statement regarding my take on the whole subject. Now if either you or me really believed that losing a half day of personal time was a trauma for these players, than I certainly would be "b-tching" about it.
