Was at the game and obviously the contrast between the first and second halves was staggering. Maybe this was discussed at length already (though not at all in the game summary) but what was that all about? I gather they were zoning us more in the second half and it was highly effective. If we can't function against a zone we are going to have serious problems going forward. It seemed like we were trying to get it to Fardaws near the top of the key, which is the way to bust a zone, and he is an able passer, but we floundered horribly during that time, so what can we do about it? Our 3 pt defense was also a huge problem again (as in past games) in the second half so we were poor on both ends of the court. We came close to losing that game after an enormous lead late in the first half.

What amazes me watching college basketball in this era is how many times I see a decent entry pass to a man posted smack in the middle of a zone, the guy turns around and tries to do more than just shoot the ball resulting in a low percentage shot or a turnover. It's nothing more than a quick short free throw for heaven sakes, even a horrible free throw shooter shoots 50%. But Wednesday we had trouble converting, trying to do too much instead of just keeping the game simple. Anyway, hopefully moving forward we will become more consistent. After these first 11 games its seems like it has to happen. Who knows?

We had a good run of threes in the 1st half and UCSD had a good run in the 2nd. AFAIK those could have been due either to lax defense or to random fluctuations. Take out both runs and you get a hard-fought game as the final score indicates.

I was at the game. Agree that the 2nd half offense was poor. But I do not think the defense was any different from the 1st half (rebounding aside). UCSD made multiple closely guarded 3's, and one from 5-6 ft outside the line, Curry territory. It happens….UCSD is not a terrible team. Rebounding another story. Poor blocking out on def end, and not enough off rebounds, especially against the zone. Work to be done there.
But, it was good to see they battled back at the end. A bit of silver lining…..Go Bears!

In boxing they say that once you have a guy against the ropes…..

…you have to finish him off or he may end up knocking you out.

In hoop when you have a 26 point lead, you better seal the deal.

They made adjustments at half. Or so it would seem. And we did not. Or if we did, we made things even worse than just continuing as is.

theoretically that should be an easy shot

but you need to make a quick decision and you are in the middle of a bunch of defenders

when you're watching the game you wonder why a player misses such an easy shot when he was open ... but the player might not know that

there are some players who are really good at taking that shot, and of course this is something that you need to practice, and there are shooting drills to practice this quick turnaround shot

Why do you think Tyson did not start? Madsen said he wanted to change things up. Perhaps he though players from, ladtbyear would play better defense.

I was at the game. It was the first game this year I could watch in person due to scheduling conflicts, so hopefully I can attend a bunch more going forward. Here's my take and observations:

1. We came out of the gate super strong with our defensive effort. All five guys were clearly putting in maximum effort, by staying glued to guys, fighting hard through screens, making successful switches and not losing guys. It was a defensive effort I haven't seen from our team all season. It must have been a stressed plan going into this game.

2. Jaylon Tyson on the bench to start the game was very curious. I consider Tyson to be our best player, or at least the most skilled. I've noticed we don't have a "go-to" player on the team yet, a clear leader. Tyson is perhaps the most likely candidate, but his demeanor is often low-key, even if that isn't how he is feeling on the inside. So when Tyson is on the floor, it seems like we often defer to him, and I wonder if that sometimes takes away from our flow. We clearly played fantastic ball the first 5 minutes of the game, and kept the ball moving offensively, leading to great looks. We need to figure out how to keep this ball movement going with Tyson, as well as have a collective high effort on defense. Sometimes defense just comes down to desire.

3. I loved the free Cal holiday socks they gave away to fans. They are a little thin, so I'm not sure how long they'll last, but I'm going to rock them this holiday season and let the chips fall where they may.

Go Bears! This is a really fun team to root for. The team has flaws, but it also has talent. It seems like all the players get along, which makes me want to support their progression throughout the season.

I arrived 30 minutes early and didn't get any socks
