"The most important thing for a teacher is for his students to have aptitude or they can't learn, they can't apply, so your rate of progress and development is way too slow," Cronin said Wednesday night after his team made only six shots and scored 23 points during the second half of a 59-53 loss to Stanford at Pauley Pavilion. "So if a team makes adjustments, we struggle to adjust to instruction on the fly."

The idea prevalent in a lot of P5 basketball programs is that player turnover is no problem - you can just throw some talented players together and it will all work out perfectly. I suspect Cronin, Mad Dog and others are learning is often doesn't takes time for players to actually work into being a team that gels. When a team has bad chemistry, players often look stupid.

Possibly three additional factors at work here:
  • Guys like Cronin were likely marginal players themselves who only succeeded because they focused on the mental part of the game to compensate for their skill level. As coaches, they get frustrated when they see young players with talent who don't pay attention to the mental part of the game. But, I have to say this has been a problem for a long time and the guys like Coach K figured out how to manage their frustrations while getting their players to improve. Maybe Cronin is sick of the entire UCLA environment and taking it out on his players.
  • Many have rightfully complained that many US players come into college having had very little coaching. They're in the habit of tuning out coaches because, as top HS players, they were essentially catered to in HS and AAU to keep them from jumping to another team. This is painfully obvious when you see a young college team try to play zone defense or even run a simple inbounds play under the hoop.
  • Regarding the foreign players, Cronin has four freshmen (and seven total from overseas) and I can't imagine the stress they're under coping with the cultural changes and educational demands, let alone playing basketball. Is their English good enough to even understand his instructions during a game?

Even if Cronin's complaints are valid, griping to the press just makes him come off as a jerk.

UCLA lurches back and forth with its style. Cronin is a defense first coach and like with Ben Holland getting great offensive players to play good defense is a formula for success. Problem is it is not a good long term fit in LA. Kids don't want to sign up for it. UCLA is currently one of the slowest playing schools in the country (in the 300s in tempo in Ken Pom). Like Mark Fox at Georgia and Cal, Cronin has had to increasingly rely on foreign players due to his reputation here. We are seeing the unraveling. Throwing the players under the bus is a sure sign a coach is on a downward slide. I think he gets canned soon, but the move to the B1G may delay that as his style arguably better fits the B1G.

I haven't been following UCLA basketball as closely as I once did, but isn't Cronin held in universally high regard for the job he has done there (up until this season)?

And then what's going on now? Obviously, he lost Tyger and Jaime and probably more, without seamlessly replacing the talent. But it sounds like there might be more to it?

I guess we will find out more in a few hours. Go Bears!

If Cronin being a jerk gives Cal a badly needed win, I say keep up the good work, Cronin!

They will suddenly play like the Warriors when they play us. Their outside shooting woes will disappear suddenly their defense will be stellar. Aka,the light will suddenly come on. They only thing we might do is put shipping containers around Pauley Pavillion so recruits wont see it.

That could be interpreted as the current players don't yet have enough experience in my system. Kinda like bright students who lack prerequisites. If so it was at least poorly phrased.

This is why I thought Cronin was the wrong coach for UCLA just like Holland before him. Of course, then UCLA went to the final four.

of course Jaquez, Campbell and their other guard (forgot his name) had something to do with that. I was always been super impressed with Jaquez and not surprised he's doing so well in the NBA

We will see if Cronin will follow the Holland UCLA career path or not

I would venture to guess that some foreign players probably speak English far better than some of the US players.

Cronin got a T for yelling at the refs, and continued to do so including punching his fist toward them as he continued to scream

for most other coaches, he would (and should) have gotten a double-technical.

but to your point, Cal got 2 FTs for Cronin's temper tandrum and that helped Cal win given the Bruins did get it close late in the second half

Maybe we can grab someone out of the portal who wants to play for the flagship UC campus.

And in the ACC, a superior hoops conference compared to the BIG.
