Was watching the replay and man, Casey Jacobsen was awful. "That was the best missed dunk I've seen all season" after Stojakovic's missed dunk

Really? I - and I can't believe I'm saying this - thought he was very good. He was very complimentary of Cal, of Haas etc... I thought he brought good observations... Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised.

The play by play guy was bad. Multiple times got the score wrong...

IMO, they took so long last night they clearly had no convincing evidence of a foul on either player. Should have just waved off the whistle, returned the ball to Stanford and 'play on'.

Yes! This is exactly what I thought at the game and was even more convinced of this after I watched it on TV later.

Can agree with you on that. Had some great commentary, but there were some off topic stuff said by him.

yeah, Casey jabbers on way too much, but at least for the first time (ever?) he was complimentary of Cal throughout the game, likely do to his relationship with MarkM. (Whatever it takes for TV talking heads to talk positive about the Cal program is good for us and the future in the ACC....)

Casey liking and respecting Madsen so much greatly improved his commentary. Still a dooosh though.

Does anyone have video of the last 7 seconds? Did Celestine block the shot?
The box score does not credit Celestine for a block. The video (2:52 below) does indicate Aimaq did disrupt the shooter and force him to try a harder, up-and-under shot that deflected off the backboard. That hard deflection makes it look like a block.

much clearer look at the final sequence

Absolutely! That just about brings a tear to my eye (gawd, I'm getting old).

And from that video, once again, it sure doesn't look like 2500 empty seats in there.

Just a few thoughts

- Tyson is such a warrior. Guy has so much determination and passion

- Kennedy battling thru off ball screens chasing around Carlyle. Forced him into a lot of bad shots in the 2H

- Newell had a rough defensive stretch for a bit. But he regrouped and made some ballsy plays down the stretch. Love to see him play with better mental toughness

- Celestine taking over once Tyson went down. Love seeing him play with more aggression

- Jaydn Ott walking around Haas like the mayor of Berkeley

- madsen looks so good in the blue and gold tie

- I'm so happy eastcoastcal got a taste of what haas used to be like

- genZ confused on how to storm the court after beating your rival in the last seconds of the game. Maybe shocky can give a decal class
Still have the excited vibe this morning - Thanks Ducky for a great recap. Energy was amazing and Madsen is such a positive force. Players really enjoy playing for him. Off season is huge for the staff to rebuild and keep the improvement coming. His effort and round the clock commitment will produce the program results, we all hope for.
4thGenCal, thanks for all you and the other large donors do for the program. Last night was indeed a special milestone, and I'm loving the positive momentum. Madsen said in his post game presser that an asst coach missed the game to take a European recruiting trip, so sounds like the staff has eyes on the future as well as the present.

It's a good time to be a Golden Bear!

We start the season as the BDW program/team in the conference, and now we're already in the mid-tier, and still progressing. The team is gelling, and lately, learning how to close games. Really looking forward to the rest of the season, and a good run at the final P12 tourney.

Recruiting is also going to improve by virtue of us joining the most prestigious basketball conference in the NCAA. Things are looking up for Cal hoops!

Fantastic win and fan support. Celestine carried the team in the second half. He's gotta get more involved. Cone needs to dial it down. Those two changes alone would really benefit the team. We are kind of lucky stanfurd shooting went cold though. They're a really good team. After watching this game, I'm convinced Madsen can do wonders here.
Not sure Cal's luck had a lot to do with this. They ramped up the 2nd half defense a lot and Stanford didn't get a lot of good looks. I'd say they got lucky Cone had his worst shooting game of the season. He's streaky but even after going 0-6 from 3, he's still shooting 32% from 3 for the season.

News on Tyson? Hamstring strain? Cramp? He was jumping around with the guys right after the game. But I'd hate for this to be an extended absence.

I'm wondering if Tyson could have some blood drawn during or after a hard practice to find out exactly what imbalance is causing his cramps.

Pretty sure it's cramping, eh? I think so, too. At least I hope so.

Really, probably just needs to supplement with magnesium and potassium and stay hydrated. I live in the tropics and do yard work every weekend and will cramp up badly if I don't. Bottled water is usually reverse osmosis or distilled with no minerals added back and can deplete your electrolytes. I'm not a fan of Gatorade but that or Pedeolyte is better than nothing.

add some bananas to the training table. And get the warrior a minute or two of rest during the game.

I have a question about the Newell foul

I get the rule. What I don't get is the mechanism that allowed a review (and a reversal)

If it was just a common reach foul, I'm almost sure that can't be reviewed. So why was this call able to be reviewed?

Was it because they were reviewing if it was a flagrant? And in the process of determining a flagrant, you can just reverse the call?

Or are you allowed to review any "cylinder" call? That seems kinda ridiculous

Especially when you could not review the obvious foot out of bound before the winning 3 pointer in the Texas Tech game. There was no question the foot was out, but there was no checking the question.

liked that they brought back the student bench banner (sorry, didn't get a good pic from my angle and it seemed like the left side never got straightened out completely)

Cal really pulled out all the stops ... free student tixs, free t-shirts, with the choir boy national anthem, player intro flame throwers, bench banner, half time dunk show

Yeah, special rule for "cylinder fouls". Section 2, Art. 1, Rule 11(d)(1)(b). (Page 107 of the Rulebook linked below.)

Just listened to Rod's "I Hate Stanfurd" podcast episode. He talks about Jacobsen's anti-Cal commentary.

Just watched the second half - if not for the big script Cal in the middle of the court, you'd think Stanford was playing a faceless five or the Washington Generals; in stretches both announcers were all about Stanford. Justin Allegri and Theo Robertson on the Varsity app, with some timing adjustments on the TV side, are way better than Furd alums calling Cal/Stanford games (and better than Bill Walton and Ted Robinson, for that matter)

I know the "wood chop" phrase from the Stanley Gordon West novel, "Blind Your Ponies" (a book version of the movie Hoosiers). Do you think the team's use of it is a reference to that book, or is it just a common saying?

I was thinking it referred to (1) chopping down the Furd tree or (2) "chopping wood" as a synonym for grinding and putting in the hard work.

Yeah, that's how it's used in the book (one of the characters uses it prominently and it becomes a mantra for the team). I suppose it's particularly apt in connection to furd.

My understanding is it is an American sports (and business) adaptation (corruption really) of the Zen Buddhist saying "Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water." With the American meaning being "focus on process, keep grinding, doing the work, don't worry about results, and the results will follow."

I just caught the replay of the game on PAC 12 BAY AREA.
Stanford player gifted CAL the game by shuffling his feet while wiiiiiiiiide open underneath the bucket at the end of the game. probably one of the worst turnover in the pac 12 this year. your alone under the bucket, 12 sec left, down one, catch the entry pass - should I dunk, lay it up or look around and shuffle my feet. he made the wrong choice
