People always talk about "Desean's foot" in the Arizona game but the interception in the end zone that the refs took away with a bogus PI call against Cal cost us the Rose Bowl in 2006.

I thought the 2013 Big Game with the Skov hit/penalty on Cal was the worst, until the 2014 Big Game. THAT became comical in how many horrible calls the refs made or if they got it right, the booth overturned.

And you are very right on that call! He SLID into the end zone! And then there were the 2 non-existent PI calls against Cal to get within striking distance. I was a kid at the time, but have never, ever forgotten this total BS that happened back then.. Thanks for reminding me and striking that nerve!

You are correct. Horrible BS call on fucla's last drive. Officials either on the take or? It was so blatantly obvious that in itself was amazing. Phantom PI calls? Sliding into the end zone? Really? Pound sand Fucla.

Pac-12 refs see their "officiating" jobs as when to call fouls.

Most other refs, i.e. good refs, see their jobs as game managers.

At the Arizona game this year, Caleb Love had a ferocious dunk on Gus Larson. It was an exciting and even violent play. Love just elevated and slammed it on Larson's head. The quick anticipation and reaction was so visceral that the refs blew the whistle and it's almost like they figured out what the infraction was after. In the commotion after, they ended up calling 2 fouls on a clean play. One on Larson for god knows why and a technical on Love---his reaction is standard these days. The point being, it was such a high-energy, unexpected play that their reaction was to just blow the whistle and figure it out after. They often get caught by surprised in key moments with unexpected plays and they will always blow the whistle instead of no-calling---which wouldn't hurt either team and maintain flow of the game.

Sidenote: We are lucky that play didn't go viral. It was vicious.

For years the unspoken issue with Pac 12 refs was that they called the game too close. Then in the last three years or so I felt they were bridging the gap, the games were starting to have the same feel as the other conferences in D1. But this year it feels like the whole thing slipped again. In addition to the two absurd calls against Stanford, (Celestine baseline and Grant "cylinder rule), I will point out that the Celestine/and one call, in the middle of the key late was almost as bad as the other two. JC literally swung himself into the furd defender horizontally.

Last night I watched Ole Miss/Mississippi State in what was a fantastic game played at a rapid pace. Except for a couple of usual misses, the game was officiated competently. When the Pac 12 dissolves, basketball officiating is one thing I won't miss.

I don't believe the refs work for the Pac 12 directly. They work with multiple conferences. In the west, the same officials are doing P12, MW, WCC, etc.

IMHO, Most issues with officials are usually based on the individual official's personality/style and their relationship with a head coach (or rarely, a player). Also, the lead ref has much more impact on style of officiating that night.

An example was an official named Greenstein? Him and Monty had a history going waaaay back. He officiated Cal games differently when Monty was coach (it was pretty obvious to most of the old timers who had seen this for years). He also was less impactful, when he was not the lead ref.

I don't know what started the rift, but I heard it involved Greensteins mother and farm animals
