The Lakers have the day off tomorrow. Any chance LeBron trips up to Haas to watch Bronny play?

Not as much as Bill Walton.

Just a different take here.

First, let me say I'm a great fan of LeBron. Now to answer you question - I don't give a sh*t whether he's there or not. I'm going to watch the Cal Bears!

I saw Dr. J at Haas once to watch his son….on the bench.

I'm having difficulty going down the Where is he now? rabbit hole.
I would like to know if he graduated Cal and what he is up to.

Lebron actually played in Haas. Can't remember if it was 2002 or 3. LF jr's Berkeley High team was in a tournament there and Lebron was on a team that was playing in it. He was pretty hyped at that point so I knew who he was. I recall him being skinny (especially compared to today) and what stood out was his passing. They didn't play Berkeley High, so LF jr missed the chance to brag about playing against him. LF jr is 6'7" so he probably would have guarded him (or tried to).

Thanks for the story. Got the year wrong but at least I remembered the tournament. LF jr actually got invited to join the Soldiers, but after talking to them it was pretty clear that they wanted us to pay and that his role would be practice fodder, so passed.

I think Leon Powe was on that team. LF jr did play against him, when Berkeley High met Oakland Tech in the Nor Cal finals. His claim to fame is that he blocked one of Leon's shots.

It was between LeBron's sophomore and junior high school years that he had made some comment about playing for our Bears. I had heard this, and thus ended up watching the Soldiers as they played a summer AAU game at Cal State Dominguez Hills. LeBron, Powe, and some center whose name I can't recall, were the core of the Soldiers. It was a small gym and they played on one of the two cross courts. There was only standing and I was one of maybe 25 watching. They played two games that afternoon and I waited quite a while to also watch the second.

The Soldiers thumped the other teams in both of the games. I was standing next to and talking a bit with a father of a player on one of the other teams. He was surprised and discouraged, but I could tell he had no idea who they were playing.

It was 2001, he played for the Oakland Soldiers. I watched a couple of his games, they were actually played in the REC center, not the main Haas Pavillion court.
One of my son's High School coaches was the head coach for the Soldiers and gave me the heads up that I should check him out

Yes, Leon was on the team. Ayinde Ubaka also played for the Soldiers I think he was on that team as well. Not sure about Maquise Kately but he may have been another.
Leon's son is a Sophmore on this years Salesian College Prep team ranked top 25 in the country

Yes, Ubaka and Kately as well. Saw them play Modesto Christian with Midgley and Parris at the USF gym. Lebron had the ugliest 3-point shot I've ever seen during warm-ups, but during the game, his MO was to take the ball at the top of the key, spin, and drive or pull up an easy 2.

That's right - it was RSF. Got confused with the Berkeley High/Oakland Tech game, which was in HAAS. Unless my memory failed again; tough getting old.

I think he's on one of the baselines. Guessing it's the one with the students and band behind him.

This is who we presumed to be Lebron, sitting in the SW corner at floor level. He looks disguised (can't blame him). EDIT: Yes that is him... best I could do from all the way across Haas, diagonally, but there are two much better pictures on the first two pages of the game thread, where you can actually tell it's him.

Was the center Kendrick Perkins? I seem to recall someone mentioning (in this forum) that those three played for the Soldiers together.

Was at the game last night with my son. Middle of the first half he mentions to me, "there's LeBron sitting down in the corner near the USC bench." I take a look and then say to my son, "yep, that's him." After that I watch another 30 minutes of regulation and 5 more minutes of OT of a really exciting game featuring the Cal Bears, who go on to win it. That's what made it such as great experience!

In 2001 I went to the RSF to watch Rory O'Neil play in an AAU game since Cal was recruiting him (He ended up going to USC, I think). I was drawn to the far court on the first floor where there was game with like 100 coaches watching, one of whom was Steve Lavin, others I forget. There were good players in the game like Chuck Hayes (Kentucky and the Houston Rockets), Demarshay Johnson (Louisville) and Richard Midgley (and others I can't remember). But a 6'6'' point guard with big feet stood out. He had the game on a string, though his only shot was falling left. After five minutes I turned to a UTEP assistant coach and said "who is that?" He said it was LBJ and that he was a sophomore and was the second ranked sophomore in the country. A few minutes later I turned to him and said that he was the best high school player I had ever seen (which included Jason Kidd and some other pros). He said I should have seen Lamar Odom in high school. I wish I had.

I saw LeBron play a second time a few months later somewhere in SF. The Soldiers were playing Modesto Christian, I think. I know an AAU team playing a high school is weird, but that is what I remember. The second time it was like he had been discovered and was too important to try. But that first game is one of my favorite sports memories.

I was at that game against Modesto Christian at the USF gym. Lebron and Leon were ranked the #1 and #2 sophs at the time (before Leon blew out his knee).
