Does Cal lead the NCAA in percentage increase in attendance from beginning of home conference play through most recent home conference game played?

*Haas hasn't rocked in 7 years. It took two knucklehead coaches to destroy the Cal program and fanbase and a Furd one season to resurrect it.

i would expect a good ucla turnout but wouldn't be confident it'll stay that way. but to your point, i doubt many schools who were pulling 3-4k (maybe) early in the season are now drawing 3-4x that later. especially since we still don't have a winning record or anything.

Madsen looked super fired up though yesterday. he's going to be a good one i think.

I expect a good turnout for UCLA but Oregon (when "down") and Oregon State are just not that big of a draw. That's okay. What matters is that games are on the radar for people again. They'll think back to the USC or Stanford game and remember how fun that was. They'll tell their friends. If there's any good offseason news like some impact transfers or recruits, we'll see some respectable attendance.

Oh yeah, Oregon St. is a draw. Last season, the Oregon St. game was the only one I bothered to go to.

It didn't hurt that it was our best chance for a win, and while it conflicted with part of the Bengals-Bills divisional round playoff game, there was plenty of time to get home to watch the Cowboys-Niners playoff.

Also helped that tickets were dirt cheap on the secondary market, I got a pair for an excellent price in the third row behind the scorers table towards the Cal bench, close enough to really witness what an idiot the MF head coach was and see up close how much he contributed to the Bears getting blown out by 20 points to the second worst team in the conference, behind only the Bears. The Bears had mostly played good defense through the first 17 minutes, but had just given up a 3 and were down 19-15, when the MF called his use-it-or-lose-it TO to chew out the team and treat them with total contempt and disdain. And guess what? The team quit playing good D after that, giving up 8 in the last 2 and a half minutes of the first half and 41 in the second half to lose 68-48.

The "official" attendance was 2072, but butts in seats was less than 1K. That plus the low down seats at least meant my wife got to catch a t-shirt.

I'm very annoyed that I have a conflict for the Oregon St. game this year, it would be nice to see the contrast between the truly dreadful game last year and this year, and remind me of how much I enjoy not seeing us coached by a MF. But I've enjoyed the 4 conference wins I've seen and will be at UCLA and Oregon, hopefully that makes up for not getting to the OSU game I consider the Super Bowl.

Oregon is a draw because of their recent basketball success (although Monty was undefeated against Dana while he was at Cal and against decommit Garret Sim -- remember we got Jorge because of that though) and it will be Senior Day. Will Jaylon Tyson walk out with the rest of the seniors? Stay tuned.

Meanwhile Furdites are reporting a small band at the ucla game last night and no cheerleaders or pom pom girls.

Jorge is one of my favorite Cal Bears. He was tough and fought tooth and nail on every possession. I wish all Cal players had his grit and tenacity.

After last year's 3-win season, I thought the Cal men's basketball program was dead in the water. Madsen's managed to lead this year's team to double digit wins. I'm stoked by that. More importantly, the team is getting better with each game. Not only would many of the early season losses would be wins if played today, but the team managed to pull out a victory after surrendering a significant lead to U$C last night. That's a turnaround from last month's ASU game.

I'm happy with the way the team has progressed. While Madsen still makes some questionable coaching decisions (e.g., calling his final timeout with 43 seconds left in the second half last night) he seems to be getting better with his in-game strategy, as well. Better yet, Madsen seems to have bought in fully into Cal, what it is, and what it represents. I'm highly optimistic that Madsen will lead Cal back to the Big Dance in a couple years (if not sooner), even in the basketball-focused ACC.

I wish he had subbed more (Newell and Brown) but since he didn't I don't mind using timeouts to give his overworked 5 a blow.

We made the right hire for sure! I had not expectations when Madsen was hired, but he got me optimistic right away! I remember I wanted Pasternack or Abdur-Rahim, but Pasternack is doing awful at UCSB right now. Abdur-Rahim's track record wasn't so great, although he's succeeding at USF. Madsen has done a phenomenal job here and has restored our program. Can't wait to watch more games this year and the years to come!

8285, the Beavers are still a draw for you?!? Man, you are still living in the days of -- forget Gary Payton for a moment -- Ray Blume, Mark Radford, Steve Johnson, Lester Conner and AC Green!

Wow, some great teams from Corvallis, back during the Ralph Miller tenure.

Such beautiful movement, passing, and shooting from Miller's teams. I could never dislike them.

I am still amazed that last year under Fox Cal was the lowest scoring team (out of 363 teams) in the entire country in addition to being tied for the fewest wins in the entire country (and our history). Combining that with a surly pompous controlling personality choked out any remaining life that hadn't been sucked out of the program.

One of those games, in Harmon, Sports Illustrated had just done a feature story on them*. 5-6 minutes into the first half, we call our first timeout and we're down, like, 26-2.

(8285 will do doubt "refine* some of my recollections)

*Beavers of that era were noted for their style of play: lots of passing, little dribbling, constant full-court press... it was something to behold, not to mention they had balanced line-ups filled with good players

Based on the SI feature story timeline, I'm guessing that was the 79-80 game, OSU came in ranked #2 and we lost 86-55. The 80-81 game, in theory OSU's best season, they also came in to Harmon ranked #2 and we "only" lost 69-54.

Those Ralph Miller early 80's Beavers were fun to watch. By 81-82, OSU was still good but not quite as good, and "only" came in to Harmon ranked #17. Among others Johnson, Blume, and Radford had graduated, but I was personally more fond of the starting backcourt, two East Bay guys in senior Lester Conner, and my personal favorite, junior William Brew, Berkeley High Class of '79 and as a HS junior a starter for the '78 BHS team that won the NCS in an overtime thriller over O'Dowd and lost to McClymonds in the TOC semis. AC Green was a freshman on that 81-82 OSU team, which smashed the Bears 74-43.

I may, however, have been joking about OSU being a draw for me these days, except as a team that Cal can beat. Before the conference season started last year, the home game against OSU was the only conference game I figured Cal should be favored to win, and I correctly figured I could get a very good seat for cheap at a game with a very small crowd, and it was conveniently located to go to a 49ers-Cowboys watch party in Berkeley afterwards.

The Super Bowl nature of the game was ruined a little when we upset Colorado and Stanford, so that the OSU game was no longer possibly the only conference win of the season, but that's probably good, since the OSU smashed the Bears by 20 points. Yeah, the last home conference game ever against OSU, with OSU being the worst conference team we would face last year, and we lost by 20.

As much as I am a die-hard Cal fan, I would rather watch those early 80's OSU teams than the 22-23 Bears.

I think the momentum can be sustained because next year we will be playing a nice, fresh slate of higher profile ACC teams, so that's going to hold fan curiosity and interest, at least for awhile.

-Kobe Bryant, 60 Minutes, 2016.

Over his 20-year career, Kobe won me over. Initially, I disliked him for being an arrogant rookie who airballed his first couple shots in the NBA. When Jerry West traded away Eddie Jones to get Kobe more minutes, it made me dislike #8 more (Eddie Jones was beloved by Lakers fans for being so approachable and fan friendly). Then when Shaq left the Lakers for Miami because of his feud with Kobe that really sank the latter in my books.

Yet, Kobe persevered. He gave his all every night on the floor, even when he was running with guys like Smush Parker.* He demanded a trade to get the Lakers' front office to make some trades and make the team contenders, again. He led a collection of Lakers (whose only other true star player was Pau Gasol, a player I really liked but also found to play too soft) to win two championships; the last over the hated Boston Celtics.

Even in his decline, Kobe gave his all. He reminded me of Joe di Maggio, who once stated he always played his heart out because there might be someone in the stands who'd never seen him play and he didn't want that guy thinking he sucked. Kobe never shortchanged his fans. After tearing his Achilles, he got up, sank two free throws then shuffled off the court. Even in his final game, he scored 60 points, thought it took him 50 attempts.

I don't know when, but at some point, Kobe won me over. I found myself rooting for him. When he retired, I was actually sad. When the news of his helicopter crash and death was reported, I actually found myself griefstricken. I never thought I'd feel that way about an athlete, except maybe Magic Johnson (who was my basketball idol when I was a boy).

For all his faults, and Kobe had many, he was and always be one of the greatest of all time. He wasn't as athletic as Tracey McGrady nor could he jump out of the gym like Vince Carter. He wasn't a physical freak of nature, like Lebron James not was he a pure shooter, like Ray Allen. But Kobe maximized what talent God blessed him with and he dominated the league by sheer force of will.

I'm glad the Lakers decided to memorialize Kobe in front of the House that Kobe built.

*Incidentally, a law school classmate of mine was Smush's roommate on one of the European pro teams.
