We have no answer for them right now, so I hope MM considers using more than three guys off the bench. This is when the shallowness of our bench is obvious. When only one out of your five starters has more than one FG it's time to see if someone else can get a hot hand - you don't wait to get down by 12 at halftime.
I'm guessing you don't want to get down 17 with 15:17 to go in the game?
When Cone misses such a wide open three, it may not be Cal's game.

Lots of empty seats for such a good product.

Well, Cougs have the same problem that Bears do: Beasley seats 12,000.

Way too easy for the Cougs. Poor effort is an understatement. I think this is Cal's worst effort of the year. I hope Madsen sets them straight for Saturday.

Played poorly but cal keeps getting no calls when mugged under the basket but refs give ticky tack and ones at the other end. Sick of it.

I know some didn't like the effort tonight, but the team was due for a letdown. They have been playing really well and have been in a ton of close games. I think after the emotions of the USC OT win and then the UCLA game which went down to the wire the team was mentally drained. Top that off with travel to the frigid Palouse and tonight's game is understandable.

WSU is now 12-1 at home. They beat Arizona. They are alone in 2nd place. A Tournament team. Sure, it would be nice for the score to have been closer but they are a better team playing at home. We beat them in OT at Haas, so a split is a win for us.

good cal stats:

only 8 turnovers
80% FTs
8 steals
23 bench points

bad cal stats:

a zillion uncontested buckets often at point blank

defense wins college basketball games (particularly on the road)#

They didn't come to play. Hopefully they keep it close enough to come out strong at half. I like the positive reinforcement approach Madsen seems to use, but this team needs to be yelled at today. They're playing lazy, sloppy basketball, and if you're collecting a check or getting a free education and not playing your heart out, you're a thief. This is unacceptable.
Except for the phrase I highlighted in bold letters, I agree with all that you wrote. As to the highlighted phrase, these are kids. I'd wager there is nothing in their contracts that requires these kids to "play their hearts out." It is a sad commentary on modern times that kids often don't play that hearts out, and I don't think paying them money to play is incentivizing them to play any harder. Some maybe, but not most. I think the opposite is true. I think they care less about playing hard, because they have it so easy, compared to their parents' generation.

Pete Newell's kids played hard every game. They all had scholarships, and Newell required them to work 20 hours a week, so they made some more money that way. I talked with one of his players, and asked him if he thought the reason they played hard was that Newell had yelled at them or threatened them. He said, Newell did not do that much at all. I asked them why did they play so hard then? He then replied, "I think we all played hard every game was because of what we thought Newell might do to us if we didn't."

Lastly I think a defense-focused team is more likely to give effort every game than an offense-focused team. Defense is just plain hard work, and there is no tangible reward for playing hard on defense. Offensive stats are what counts, scoring. Offense is what excites everyone, and sells tickets, and offense is what kids love to practice when they are alone, shooting or dribbling. Defense is not glamorous. It does not bring the big salaries in the NBA, and I'd guess the same is true in college. And so far, what we have at Cal now is an offense-focused coach in Madsen. And his offense is good because he has brought in a few good offensive players. Kennedy is maybe his best defensive signing so far. Madsen needs to bring in a few good defenders, and then we should see more effort. Successful effort on the defensive end can stimulate effort on offense.

Well, at least the Madsen-to-the-Warriors worriers can go back into hibernation.

My oversimplification of this game. Substandard play by the Bears, but honestly, especially in the second half, everything the Cougars were throwing up was going in the hoop, whether it was well defended or not. WSU is currently on a roll, and even a top ten team is going to have problems winning up there right now. See>Arizona.

Cal lost many balls just on lack of hustle and conviction. How many rebounds were in Cal's hands but taken away? Also, we shouldn't worry about Tyson leaving for the pros: he is not a pro. He may be sometime, but not yet.

Exactly, people are underestimating how good WSU is. They are challenging Arizona for the conference championship. We are currently #8. Sure, if we hustled more we could have lost by less, but the game we really need to go all out to win is UW tonight. Tgere the extra effort could make a difference.

Stanford is up by 1 to Wazzu today (Sat) at halftime… not saying they'll beat them, just saying we can't say the Cal blowout was due to an invincible Wash St. As usual, though, even a losing season is salvaged if we can sweep the Furd, so still waiting for that to happen in the last game.

As others point out, Stanford lost by 13. And my point wasn't that "the blowout was due…" my point was "If we played better we would have only lost by less" and that the game we needed to go all out to win was UW. Which we did.

Again, WSU already has 20 wins and is battling Arizona for the conference title. They beat Arizona in the Palouse. Cal losing that game was not a bad loss I even if we could have played better and made it closer. WSU is good and well coached.

"WSU is good and well coached."

I met Kyle Smith in 2001 at a Father's Day weekend hoop camp at SMC that I attended with my son. Randy Bennett had just come in to helm the program after Dave Bollwinkel's ouster. Kyle was Randy's assistant.
I came away from that weekend extremely impressed with how smart Kyle was. His career arc went straight up. I lobbied for him on BI every time Cal fired a coach. Happy to have Madsen, however.

My brother was the PG at UC San Diego after Randy Bennett in the 80s and has known Kyle Smith since he and Bennett were assistants at the University of San Diego and were all part of a weekly pick-up game/beer drinking session. One of my brother's teammates played professionally in Australia and helped develop the Aussie pipeline for Smith and Bennett at St. Mary's. My brother has always praised Kyle's basketball mind including discussing advanced metics and so, as a Columbia grad, I was extremely happy when Kyke took over and completely turned around the worst program in the Ivy League. I know he loved his decade living in the East Bay and always thought he would make a good coach at Cal, but the timing was always off.
