Anyone else getting nervous the Stanford will fire Jerod Haase and hire Madsen at season's end?

Assuming Tyson goes pro and with the rest of the transfers out or eligibility, that will leave us pretty much in the same spot as end of last season.

If that were to happen, any suggestions on next potential coaching targets?

Danny Sprinkle, Joe Pasternack, Niko Medved, Pat Kelsey, David Riley are some name that come to mind.

Utah gets to see their coaching target MM up close tomorrow. However, I doubt he's leaving Cal.

I haven't heard or seen ANYTHING that supports this. Other than Haase getting let go at season's end is possible.

I guess little surprises me these days. But it would actually surprise me that:

1. Stanford Fires Haase, AND
2. Stanford thinks Madsen it their best option, AND
3. Stanford goes hard for Madsen, AND
4. Cal doesn't fight to keep him.

I would put the odds of this happening at less than 1%

Much more likely that 1 happens, but they find more available and appealing options at step #2. (Look to see them lure Todd Golden back west).

Haase is definitely a dead man walking. They have lost 5 in a row all by double digits I believe and Colorado looms. They would love to get Madsen.

If we had semi-competent administrators, I would say absolutely not. Madsen is one year into his contract so there should be a large buyout, and Stanford is in the same position as us facing a major revenue concession.

However, since we do not, it's very likely that Madsen's contract is like Wilcox's $30m extension with a unilateral buyout clause in which the university is on the hook for every dollar if they fire Wilcox, but another school can poach Wilcox with a minimal buyout (can't recall what it was exactly, but I think 1/10th of the contract).

So while Madsen doesn't seem like the type of person to bounce after a year, it's not out of the realm of possibility if his contract was established like the ridiculous contract they provided Wilcox.

Not at Furd, they don't have the kind of impatience you find in many other fan bases, Haase is .523 with some big wins this season (100-82 vs #4 Arizona), I doubt they fire him.

Unlikely that MM's contract doesn't have a buyout. Wilcox's original contract by Mike Williams did not have that buyout, so it appears that was carried over into his new contract by JK. Fox's contract did have a buyout.

Would they? I imagine the salary negotiation would make his price pretty steep. And that's a lot to pay for someone who doesn't yet have the track record of taking a middling team and making them into contenders. It's like if Troy Taylor went 5-7 last year, would we be banging down the doors to replace Wilcox with him?

I love this!

But at 3-9, maybe Troy Taylor is a bargain ?!?!? And he is a Cal Alum, which as we all know, is worth 5 wins. That makes him a double-secret 8-4. So a DEFINITE upgrade to Wilcox. And Knowlton could give him a $50M buyout clause, so he will be home with us FOREVER. Even after Knowlton is fired next year.

Since Haase played 1 year at Cal - doesn't that make him better than Madsen, anyway. Maybe JK can pay Stanford $80M to swap coaches. Then Haase could take us to the final four! Knowlton could throw in some hockey tickets and an AirBnB in Colorado.

Seriously, only Jim (JK stands for Just Kidding) Knowlton, could rectify his surprising good hire of Madsen by replacing him quickly.

Checking on the "Cardboard"- they didn't even have a game thread for their game last night against Utah. They want him gone. They would love to get Madsen or at least someone new. They have money if they choose to raise it and spend it.

The reason their fan base is not impatient is because it really isn't even a fan base. But at this point, if there is no Big Dance appearance this year (almost impossible), that's an 8 year track record with not one appearance in the NCAA tourney. I would be surprised if Furd retains him.

His buyout after March 31 of this year is as follows:

24-25: $4M
25-26: $3M
26-27: $1.75M if he goes to a Pac-12 or ACC school, $1M otherwise

The only way Madsen leaves after only one season is if he feels like he's being jerked around and not supported (NIL, new practice facility, his contract and those of his Assistants, admissions, etc.), He was aware of the challenges, but I'm talking about promises broken, stuff like that...

However, he must be looking at the talent that the unkempt Haase has recruited to Furd and imagined that he could do even better.

Todd Bozeman. What a great story of redemption it would make. Netflix documentary potential.

*Factoring in inflation, it will now take $63,116.4 instead of $30,000 to recruit a point guard that dribbles the ball chest high.

*I will commit to contributing $10,000 to have this Todd Bozeman quote etched onto the wall of the Haas Pavilion foyer:

IT'S A SIMPLE GAME, TWO BASKETS AND A BALL"
Todd Bozeman, 1994

*I also propose that Cal create this NFT to celebrate his hire and use the proceeds to fund NIL bucks:

LOL. After the first game Jelani played at Haas, I turned to my father on the way out and said, "I don't know what it is, but I just have the feeling this Gardner kid is trouble."

I'd be very surprised if he left the Palouse. His wife is from there and after stints in NY (Columbia) and San Francisco (USF) she wanted to return to the area to be closer to her family. She has the state of Washington high school record for points scored in a state playoff game.
Smith was never a candidate for the Cal job. Declined an interview as he was going to accept the WSU job for family reasons.

What is the rough average home attendance at Stanford and Cal this season. I don't follow it. BTW, Cal vs. Stanford in basedball this season could be incredible. Best in years.

No chance that MM runs out on Cal after a year, he's not that kind of guy. It doesn't make sense anyway for building his career. If he wants to coach the Lakers one day (just throwing it out there), he has to prove he can build a program from scratch. He needs at least three years to do that, so we have him for at least that long.

Actually, the first three things are exactly what I expect to see. The unknowns are whether Cal's fight to keep him will win the day, and MM's own views about where he'd rather be.

Exactly. IMO it won't even be "Cal's fight to keep him." IMO it will just come down to where Madsen wants to be. And we likely lose if it was only his rival vs his alma mater. I think for Madsen our biggest advantage I'm assuming is he wants to raise his kids where he grew up and wants to work an easy commute from there to maximize family time. I think the odds are more like 60-40 in our favor. Neither decision would surprise me.
