Stories like this make me wonder why the NCAA doesn't just give up the pretense of the portal and just make all school-player arrangements one-year contracts. Along with recruiting, practice, and playing periods they could add a negotiating period.

Because it is horrible for students. Students that transfer are much more likely to finish with out a degree. Students that transfer more than once are even less likely. This is true even if you control for a ton of confounding variables like family income, age, "selectivity" of the school, etc.

Lost in a lot of hang writing about how evil it is that coaches can "transfer" and players can't is the underlying rational for this. The NCAA is a flawed organization with a lot of poor ethical decision making but there is a logic here which is pretty well factually supported.

The "logic" of the NCAA only works when the colleges get out of the entertainment business. So long as big money is involved, the NCAA will bend to the will of the dollars. Does anyone know if the "employee" rationale is predicted on the players receiving grants in aid (pay)? Maybe if athletic scholarships are abandoned the colleges can go back to education. Of course, March Madness would cease as we know it.

That is essentially what the portal is: An organized marketplace, with dates set that make sense for the players and coaches. The NCAA cannot impose restrictions but it makes sense for buyers and sellers of "player services" to participate in one central marketplace and abide by their rules. It is how players get seen by the most coaches and coaches get to evaluate the most players. Basketball season is over. It is the natural time to think about next year.

Wow, so if Curtis and Pavlovic decide to test the waters, we would be tied for #1 with Louisville! Rarefied air!

And to think, only the season before last, we were battling Louisville for last-place-in-the-country... this is what Jason Kidd used to refer to as a 360 degree turnaround! (actually, maybe that would be correct in this case)
