Fun to watch is an interesting (and VERY subjective) metric. For me, Jaylen Brown and Shareef Abdur Rahim were great players and solid representatives of Cal, but they were more frustrating than fun. That has a lot more to do with me, my age, their coaches and teammates - than the players themselves.

For me, my top of the head top 5 Fun to Watch players were:

#1 Jason Kidd (also made others fun to watch like Lamond, who may not have been as fun without Kidd)

The rest in no particular order

Kevin Johnson (really was the catalyst of a new era for Cal.)
Jorge G (made defense fun)
Brian Hendrick (he just played better than he looked, so I was often amazed - and I needed a big)
Leon Powe (another big with a big smile, a big heart and some big shoulders)

Note: The most recent is Jorge (4 coaches ago). And many were from an era when I was a Student through being a parent bringing my kids to games and camps. There was no hint of NIL and MBB sports betting and TV contracts were just a flicker on the horizon. All of which has more to do with my FUN aspect, then the quality of the player.

+1. I too did not enjoy watching Jaylen at Cal - very frustrating. On the same team, was also frustrating to watch Ivan Rabb - not because of Ivan, but because of how the staff completely wasted his talents. Felt so bad for the guy.

Another favorite was Geno Carlisle on the NIT Championship team. Fun player to watch.

Okay, I'm gonna cheat and talk about specialists:

The most "fun" player on the defensive side of the ball was A.J. Diggs. He would drive the opposing team's point guard crazy. The ultimate pest. Unfortunately A.J. had a very limited offensive game, which featured a shooting range of about ten feet. But man was he fun!

I would even put Don Coleman in the "fun to watch" category--at least, in a "can't-look-away-from-this-train-wreck" kind of way.

By contrast, there was zero measure of fun in any respect in Fox's last year. First time in 40+ years as a fan that I've chosen to not watch.

Phil was the long-time color-commentator (very humble) for the Washington Wizards/Bullets
He was talking about Wes Unseld in the context of guys you'd want on your team...as an enforcer.
CJ was high on the list.

When the phrase that you most associate with a player is:
"What the f@uck are you thinking?"
Then…..

*He did have that one high scoring game …..but it only encouraged him. It's like when Draymond makes a 3, you are assured 4 scuds are following on its heels.

I disagree. It was the era of Pac 12 officiating where defenders could jump in front of him and draw a charge. The officiating hindered him. Hope Pac 12 officials seek employment in youth rec leagues.

I'll toss in a dark horse: Connie White ('74-'76). He didn't have a great outside shot but at 6'-4", he could really sky.

I thought the form on Jaylen's outside shot was good, even though it didn't go down, so I figured there was a good chance he'd improve. Complete lack of coaching was what put a ceiling on his impact as a college player. If, as some claimed, Cuonzo really told the players they could do whatever they wanted on offense as long as they played hard on defense, Jaylen probably wasn't going to improve a lot at Cal, so it made sense to head for the NBA.

You too, eh?

Doug True was a great student-athlete at Cal. That was fun, even if his game wasn't "fun" by this thread's definition. (For you young'uns True was an old-style power forward from Pleasant Hill... Engineering major, I believe. Solid player.)

Weaksauce excuse. The officiating didn't stop the best offensive players from flourishing. He dribbled in a straight line down the center of the key bowling players over. By early in the 2nd Half he was sitting with 3 offensive fouls. He corrected that deficiency soon after he exited Cal.

I completely disagree. NBA officials did not allow defenders to jump in front him to draw charges. It is a blocking foul. You actually have to have your feet set.

I believe True was a ChemE major - a real tough one! I recall that he was drafted in the second round by the Phoenix Suns but elected to not sign. I believe his response was something like, "Maybe I'd play in the NBA for a few years, but that would just delay beginning my real career". Joe Igber (Civil Engineering grad) had a similar response when asked about going to the NFL.

I graduated from Cal's Engineering College and am in awe of anybody who could combine that with intercollegiate athletics.

No Ceilings has a nice longform article titled "Jaylon Tyson: On the Rise" that includes stats and breakdowns with video clips. A lot of their content is subscriber-only, but this one is free to read. Worth a look.

They also project him as the #22 pick in their most recent mock draft, and put up a season highlight video on YouTube.

"30. Boston Celtics: G Jaylon Tyson

Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 215 pounds | Class: Junior | Cal

Tyson was one of the best and most efficient scorers in the Pac-12 and can score at all three levels. He has good size and uses his body well while finishing at the rim and with mismatches off the pick-and-roll."

Probably a good idea to round up some mock draft predictions for Jaylon Tyson now that the lottery has taken place and we know the full draft order. bearister got this started above with Yahoo! Sports. Here are some others that have been updated in the past 24 hours.

CBS Sports/Kyle Boone (May 12)

#18 to Orlando Magic
Quote:

Cal went from a 3-win team to a 13-win team largely because of the addition of Tyson, who averaged just shy of 20 points per game this season and flashed real improvement in a leading role. Big wing with big-time shooting ability.

The Ringer (May 12)

#18 to Orlando Magic
Quote:

The Magic badly need shooting and perimeter creation. Tyson leans more on the creator side of things, but in a more condensed role his shooting could pop as a 6-foot-7 wing who can also handle the ball.

PLUSES

Big shot creator who plays with a downhill style, overpowering smaller players with a mix of bully moves, hesitations, half spins, and tight crossovers.

As the point guard for his college team, he plays at his own pace. He doesn't have the quickest first step or burst to turn the corner, but he controls the tempo. He puts good zip on passes while showing dexterity off the dribble.

Skilled post scorer who loves to back down smaller defenders, then get into lefty hook shots or right-handed turnaround jumpers over the top. He similarly has ambidextrous touch finishing at the rim off drives.

Comfortable shooter off the dribble who can make floaters, midrange pull-ups, and an occasional 3.

Knockdown 3-point shooter off the catch, a vital skill for him since he'll likely be in a multi-creator offense that'll require him to play off the ball.

Active rebounder who consistently crashes the boards and shows a willingness to put a body on an opponent.

Versatile defender who should be able to defend multiple positions on the ball, giving him value in switching schemes. Off the ball, he keeps his head on a swivel in passing lanes and is a threat to rack up weakside blocks and deflections.

MINUSES

Scaling down could help his overall offensive consistency, as he's asked to shoulder a massive workload for California. But even so, he is a streaky jump shooter.

Commits far too many reckless turnovers passing the ball into closing windows. He also doesn't have the most explosive first step, so savvy defenders have been able to strip the ball from him during his initial move.

No Ceilings (May 13)

#19 to Toronto Raptors
Quote:

Jaylon Tyson has been a player that has seen his name rise as of late. The 6'7" Junior coming from California has great size for the swing positionsomething that is fairly lacking outside of the projected lottery players. Not only does he possess good size and athleticism, but Tyson brings true two-way promise. He shot 36% from deepoftentimes self-createdand had success around the basket. Defensively, he figures to guard out on the wing fairly well.

At Cal, Jaylon had to do a ton with the ball in his hands, which helped him develop skills that will help him in the future. With a more scaled-down role with Toronto, Tyson can be trusted to hit open shots, make the right reads when he is chased off the line, be a plus-transition player, and finish well at the rim. The Raptors do have a number of wings, but going with a player with lottery-level upside makes this decision make sense, and gives Toronto more options within their rotations.

Netscouts Basketball (May 12)

#27 to Utah Jazz
Quote:

(No description, just a list.)

Bleacher Report (May 13)

#28 to Denver Nuggets
Quote:

Tyson figures to get looks from teams starting in the mid-to-late first round after a breakout season averaging 19.6 points and 3.5 assists.

A 30.1% usage on a 13-19 California team does cast a cloud over his statistical production. But the eye test clearly shows a scorer with NBA traits and skills, including 6-foot-7 size, ball-handling for creation/playmaking and tough shotmaking.

Tyson should be able to help himself by standing out during NBA combine scrimmages.

Game Theory Podcast with Sam Vecenie (May 12)

#28 to Denver Nuggets
Quote:

Number 28, the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets tend to like older... this can be like a good Jaylon Tyson spot, potentially.

Jaylon Tyson is taking part in the NBA Combine, and we know a little bit.

He was measured without shoes and had a height of at 6 feet 5.5 inches and a weight of 218.2 pounds. He has a wingspan of 6 feet 8 inches, and a standing reach of 8 feet 6.5 inches.

Tyson did well in the 3-point drill, tying for 2nd with 18/25 shooting. He and Tennessee's Dalton Knecht crashed the all-Connecticut leaderboard at the time:

Since then, Bronny James, of all people, hit 19/25 to take 2nd place, according to ESPN's Jonathan Givony, who posted the video on social media.
