Fun to watch is an interesting (and VERY subjective) metric. For me, Jaylen Brown and Shareef Abdur Rahim were great players and solid representatives of Cal, but they were more frustrating than fun. That has a lot more to do with me, my age, their coaches and teammates - than the players themselves.

For me, my top of the head top 5 Fun to Watch players were:

#1 Jason Kidd (also made others fun to watch like Lamond, who may not have been as fun without Kidd)

The rest in no particular order


Kevin Johnson (really was the catalyst of a new era for Cal.)
Jorge G (made defense fun)
Brian Hendrick (he just played better than he looked, so I was often amazed - and I needed a big)
Leon Powe (another big with a big smile, a big heart and some big shoulders)

Note: The most recent is Jorge (4 coaches ago). And many were from an era when I was a Student through being a parent bringing my kids to games and camps. There was no hint of NIL and MBB sports betting and TV contracts were just a flicker on the horizon. All of which has more to do with my FUN aspect, then the quality of the player.

+1. I too did not enjoy watching Jaylen at Cal - very frustrating. On the same team, was also frustrating to watch Ivan Rabb - not because of Ivan, but because of how the staff completely wasted his talents. Felt so bad for the guy.

Another favorite was Geno Carlisle on the NIT Championship team. Fun player to watch.

Okay, I'm gonna cheat and talk about specialists:

The most "fun" player on the defensive side of the ball was A.J. Diggs. He would drive the opposing team's point guard crazy. The ultimate pest. Unfortunately A.J. had a very limited offensive game, which featured a shooting range of about ten feet. But man was he fun!

I would even put Don Coleman in the "fun to watch" category--at least, in a "can't-look-away-from-this-train-wreck" kind of way.

By contrast, there was zero measure of fun in any respect in Fox's last year. First time in 40+ years as a fan that I've chosen to not watch.

Phil was the long-time color-commentator (very humble) for the Washington Wizards/Bullets
He was talking about Wes Unseld in the context of guys you'd want on your team...as an enforcer.
CJ was high on the list.

I disagree. It was the era of Pac 12 officiating where defenders could jump in front of him and draw a charge. The officiating hindered him. Hope Pac 12 officials seek employment in youth rec leagues.

I'll toss in a dark horse: Connie White ('74-'76). He didn't have a great outside shot but at 6'-4", he could really sky.

I thought the form on Jaylen's outside shot was good, even though it didn't go down, so I figured there was a good chance he'd improve. Complete lack of coaching was what put a ceiling on his impact as a college player. If, as some claimed, Cuonzo really told the players they could do whatever they wanted on offense as long as they played hard on defense, Jaylen probably wasn't going to improve a lot at Cal, so it made sense to head for the NBA.

Doug True was a great student-athlete at Cal. That was fun, even if his game wasn't "fun" by this thread's definition. (For you young'uns True was an old-style power forward from Pleasant Hill... Engineering major, I believe. Solid player.)

I used to think this, but it's not the case ... that's not to say that some of the charges call against Brown good calls.... several were not

I believe True was a ChemE major - a real tough one! I recall that he was drafted in the second round by the Phoenix Suns but elected to not sign. I believe his response was something like, "Maybe I'd play in the NBA for a few years, but that would just delay beginning my real career". Joe Igber (Civil Engineering grad) had a similar response when asked about going to the NFL.

I graduated from Cal's Engineering College and am in awe of anybody who could combine that with intercollegiate athletics.

Jaylon Tyson is taking part in the NBA Combine, and we know a little bit.

He was measured without shoes and had a height of at 6 feet 5.5 inches and a weight of 218.2 pounds. He has a wingspan of 6 feet 8 inches, and a standing reach of 8 feet 6.5 inches.

Tyson did well in the 3-point drill, tying for 2nd with 18/25 shooting. He and Tennessee's Dalton Knecht crashed the all-Connecticut leaderboard at the time:
