How does it work with our scholarship players who have entered the transfer portal? Is Cal no longer required to still pay for their scholarships and frees up scholarships to new recruits and what happens if those portal players end up returning to Cal?

If they come back, it is mutually agreed upon and they get their scholly back. But Cal is not obligated to take them back.

A spot on a team is not guaranteed, but an actual student in good standing has a spot in the classroom.

Portal = off the team and their scholly is surrendered. If Madsen wants them back he would essentially need to recruit them like anyone else in the portal. If he doesn't want them back they are gone.
