The new strategy will be to have 8-11 recruited scholarship players and use remaining scholarships to reward walk ons and one and done grad transfers that you need to pad your roster for practices.

I wish the 8-11 number were true or predictable, but if I had to guess today I think it's more likely Madsen gets 4-6 players to stay every year. The grass will always be greener, esp for teams that struggle to reach .500. If we somehow have an incredible year and win a March Madness spot, maybe it's a different scenario, but otherwise I think about half of players on many rosters will say, "Meh, I can do better" and enter the portal.

Braeden Smith, Spencer Mahoney, and Mike Sharavjamts seem like the candidates for those last 2 roster spots

Impressive stats for Smith, and Mahoney's 230 lbs is much needed in the paint as a Sissoko backup.

I know that if I were subscribing, I might know this, but any ideas of when we find out about the last two scholarships?

I think it's possible to go all the way till August. Perhaps just before classes start.

That is true. I know when it could be decided. My question is asking if anyone knows when the guys who have been offered are planning on a decision.

According to On3, Braeden Smith just signed with Gonzaga. (He's returning to his home state, having played prep ball in Seattle.)

Update: Smith will redshirt, according to this SWX Local Sports article. "According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Smith is reportedly expected to redshirt during the 2024-25 season with the Zags. While he may not see much court time next season, this gives him two full seasons to possibly be the Bulldogs' starting point guard once Ryan Nembhard leaves."

Xavier Edmonds is a JUCO player from Salt Lake CC, having completed his freshman year. He's a power forward, listed at 6-9 and 245. His school bio is blank, but click on the Stats tab for more information. He started 24 of 32 games last season, playing 20.8 minutes per game. He averaged 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.8 blocks.

According to Verbal Commits and his social media posts, he also has offers so far from Arizona State, TCU, and Texas A&M. He played high school ball in Long Beach, so he could be looking to return to his home state.

According to Draft Express/ESPN, Mike Sharavjamts is transferring to Utah.

I haven't come across any updates for Spencer Mahoney or Xavier Edmonds, both of whom have Cal offers.

Any idea who we do get? It would be amazing to have a full team roster.

Do we know whether Cal has any offers out to these recent NBA draft dropouts?
I assumec Madsen was holding the last two spots for draft refugees or 2nd rounders who thought they should be 1st rounders.
Achor Achor at Samford is no longer in the draft… but how many PFs and SFs can one roster hold? I would really like to hear about a PG and C that we have on the table, even a rumor would be nice.

No, it's a transfer (though Ruff might very well commit)

Won't reveal more than that since it's on the paid board, though

If this whole "keep secrets for the paid board" norm is meant to encourage others to pay, it's having the opposite effect.

There's no public announcement yet, but there is much discussion about an apparent silent commit.

It used to be fun to hear the scoop on recruiting commitments, but nowadays you don't really know for sure until the kid shows up in class, so I take it all with a grain of salt.

All true as that is the final/must have step to complete and thus be eligible. The other key indicator, is when the student athlete moves into his housing and especially if done so at the Program property site. Its saying "I am here and can't wait to get after it with my teammates".

Looks like Blacksher would be an experienced Guard who's hit some roadbumps in past seasons due to injury but is looking to get back on track with a final year of eligibility. Hope he can return to his 2021 form.

Still no news on them, but here's another candidate for the last scholarship. Yesterday The Portal Report included Cal among the schools interested in 6-6 Cal State Northridge senior De'Sean Allen-Eikens:

He would appear to have no eligibility left, but apparently he's getting a sixth season. Maybe some sort of NCAA ruling in his favor? This is probably why Verbal Commits has him entering the portal so late (June 2).

Last Word on Sports has an article about him and his fit with these 14 schools. Not much about Cal; all it says is "Cal has one scholarship available. The Bears could add depth at forward."

Here is his transfer portal highlight video:

Then there's Larry Bird. He initially matriculated at Indiana after high school. He moved into the dorms and went to a class. Then before the season even started, he left the school entirely and returned to French Lick. IIRC, he worked as a garbage collector for a bit and played ball with some of the other workers who were older and stronger. It was while playing here that Larry learned how to step back on his shots to create space. Later, he returned to the college scene, but this time to Indiana State.

Thanks to Larry Bird, I had anxiety as a kid. I was always afraid the Lakers lead, no matter how substantial, in a game against the Celtics would disappear and Larry would sink the final winning shot. But now, also thanks to Larry, I have anxiety as an adult. I'm now worried that some player will move in, attend classes at Cal, and then drop out before the season starts.

On the football side, this is not unprecedented (at Cal). Petros Papadakis did just that (though I'm unsure if he attended classes). After one week of Cal football fall camp, he left the program and returned to LA. Before that, there was Herm Edwards. He enrolled at Cal and left the program twice in four years (ultimately earning his degree from San Diego State).

Really, until I see a player suited up and playing for Cal (or even on the bench during a game), I do not consider him actually to be a Cal player. (Insert laughing face emoji.)

Slightly OT but Petros Papadakis was one of my favorite Pac football announcers.

I thought was witty, self-effacing, and just enjoyable to listen too. He seems very fair to Cal, too, and I recall him usually having good things to say about Berkeley and the Bears, despite transferring out of Cal after a short stint.

I don't know what Petros has been up to in recent years, but I hope he's still announcing somewhere...

His day job is as a host for a LA area radio show from 2-6p Mondays through Fridays. As much as he speaks highly about Cal, he's much more of a USC homer, though. That said, he is catering to a LA audience, which (prior to the return of the Rams to LA) had only the USC Trojans as the local professional football team for about 20 years.
