New floor design

Can anyone confirm that this is the new basketball floor design? I don't like it, if it is. I love the classic Cal script. I thought that the Cal center logo was a bit oversized and needed to be a bit smaller. This design is a miss. Not a fan of California script replacing Cal script and Golden Bears script along the baseline looks odd.

I have no idea. But to your point, I would prefer the block C with the bear curled inside it that is shown right in this picture.

I think it stems from the UC System's insistence that we drop "Cal" and refer to our alma mater as UC Berkeley. Frankly, that's something I refuse to do.

What happened to the half court line?

Totally agree with You!!

Baseline script is embarrassingly small. Half court logo looks like an outline or sketch. Are we getting $ from the state CVB or something? This is ridiculous. We are Cal!

The Cal script logo is one of the best college logos. Not using it at center court makes no sense. The California script with the outline of the state makes for a good apparel option, but should never replace the traditional Cal logo.

Good secondary logo, but Cal script is the best!

Agreed. Cal script for the win!!

If this is the new court design, it totally sucks. I don't like anything about it. Not the center court logo; not the end line graphic. This is exactly the type of design that brain-dead Knowlton would put together. Our court last year was perfect. Why mess with perfection?

I think the Cal logo could be a bit smaller. To me it appears too large. It stretched almost from 3-point line to 3-point line.

The consensus here is that if that's the next court logo it sucks. Every idea on this board is better than what's in that picture.

Can the administrator please fix my typo in the subject line? I wrote this post without my reading glasses and can no longer edit the subject line. Thank you!

One more blown opportunity for fan engagement. Could have commissioned a bunch of designs and had a playoff system of voting for fans, with season ticket holders voting on which one of the "final 4" would be our new final floor.

Get Knowlton the HELL OUT!

The vast majority of acc fans have no idea what "cal" is. This map is an instructional aid.

IMO, "California" should be used as a logo more often. Putting it on the court is fine with me.

The state outline fits in with the assertion of representing the state and not just the city of Berkeley. Many other states' lead university college teams have the state outline on their basketball court. Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio State...

Half court line will probably be added later.

Logos behind the baselines could be taller, but maybe not much wider if they have to leave room for the logos of sponsors near the edges of the baseline.

I also like the center court logo. Y'all want to be the flagship.

Baseline text is not great. I do like the golden jerseys with golden bears cursive though.

Interesting take. Maybe the logo should be similiar to the one in the picture but should read: "University of California, Berkeley, California, United States (of America).

Well, right now you can't find anything on Oregon's court:

I don't think they'd go through all that just to change conference logos.

Speaking of, I'm a little surprised that so little has been said in this thread about the biggest change on the Haas Pavilion court: the ACC logo.

The "Cal" logo strikes me as iconic, and it looks great on a football helmet, but let's face it: in basketball, those three letters have been diluted because people have been abbreviating "Calipari" for years, either because they're lazy or bad at spelling.

I guess I am in the minority here, but I am thrilled that they are leaning into the name "California" and using the state outline. We are and have always been the flagship institution of the State of California and it is about time that we started acting like it.

To be perfectly honest, I have long felt the name "Cal" should really only be us, the alumni and the fans. Everything else should be plastered with "California" branding. It always drives me crazy when watching a game and we are playing Oregon/Washington/Arizona/etc. and they have their full name spelled out while our abbreviated name (Cal) is used.

Although I prefer "Cal" (to me that clearly defines us), I can live with "California." But to show the state is overkill. It is still the University, not the state that we represent. This is complete speculation, but my guess is that in the college sports world when those outside the state see map outline, schools like UCLA, USC, and to a lesser extent us and furd come to mind. CALIFORNIA yes. California with the state outline, no.

100% agree - I respect all opinions, but for me, we are Cal and that is our brand equity. To put a state design on the court is misleading and its also the logo the Golden State Warriors have used. Heck having Sather Gate or The Campanile would be much more appropriate if not "Cal", End of the day its the quality of the team on the court and our priority is winning games, but it is frustrating to me that the Cal Athletic Dept/marketing group, have not fully understood the Cal alumni emotion and brand equity value that all Cal fans/alumni are bonded to.

Agreed. As an example, look at the way Alabama uses "Bama". You can wear a Bama hat, Bama t-shirt, Bama hoodie. It's a team mark. That gear is readily available for everyone who wants it. The primary mark, though, is "Alabama".

Are you suggesting we adopt the back half of our state name - Fornia? As in the land of fornication? I can see it now:

Fing hat,

Fing hoodie.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I always liked the Oskie (I think he was running) that was at center court back in the day (1970s - ?). I've always enjoyed the irony of a university with a goofy mascot but which is home to multiple Nobel Prize winners.

This court is better than the massive bear during the Cuonzo era, but as with the most recent oversized 'Cal' script design it gets a middling grade C at best.

I like the concept of featuring the state shape - classic look that works well for UNC and Indiana, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Using the outline of the state instead of a full colored-in shape just isn't very strong graphically.

For comparison:

And it seems like the outline was used in place of a full colored-in state shape to accommodate putting "California" instead of "Cal" on top of the state shape (not enough room to reverse the text - white text on solid color).

If having both state shape and California was deemed essential seems like the wood tone state shape with a bold California script overlaid would have been a stronger look.

I'm not a fan of the California or Golden Bears script lettering. Looks like softball jersey style. I prefer California and Golden Bears in the block letter style. Overall, it's a design fail, but like the concept.

Exactly the point. Works well for UNC and Indiana. Does not work for us.
