Two Cal players in NBA finals. One coaching Dallas and the other starting guard for Boston. Has this ever happened to Cal before or any other school? Cal can't lose, but who are you pulling for? I would like to see Jaylen win his first ring.

Something pretty similar happened 3 years ago, in the 2021 NBA Finals. Phoenix coach Monty Williams and Milwaukee (reserve) guard Pat Connaughton both went to Notre Dame.

If you're talking more generally about winning either way because Cal has a representative on both teams in the NBA Finals, you can say the same this year about:

Arkansas (Daniel Gafford vs. Jordan Walsh)
Duke (Kyrie Irving/Dereck Lively vs. Jayson Tatum/Amile Jefferson)
Florida (Alex Fudge vs. Al Horford)
Kansas (Markieff Morris vs. Svi Mykhailiuk)
Marquette (Olivier-Maxence Prosper vs. Sam Hauser)

There may be more; aside from Jefferson, I didn't look closely at the assistant coaches.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it might be about comparing the two as players. The first thing that came to mind was that both of these guys improved their outside shooting immensely when they became NBA players.

If the Triple Double is the measure of the best all round player, Jaylen won't ever get close to Kidd's 107 (currently 6th All Time; I think Jaylen has notched only 3).* Jaylen's career scoring average will dwarf Kidd's.

* Interestingly, the Joker (currently # 4 at 130) and Luka ( # 8 at 77) have already busted into the Top Ten.

I'm conflicted with regard to which team I prefer to win. I have deeper connections to Kidd since I am a fellow Oaklander and watched his games since he was at St. Joe's…and Jaylen is an exemplary Golden Bear and great Ambassador for the University…and I have been a Celtics fan since I was a kid (their games were on TV every Sunday nationally).

With regard to which team will win, I only watch the NBA during the Playoffs so my analysis is shaky. I think Boston beat up on the Mavs pretty good during the regular season…but my hunch is based on a golf analogy: The regular season is like a normal PGA event, but the NBA Finals is like the Masters. The players that are the most clutch will prevail.

I think Luka and Kyrie are the kind of players that sink 25 foot putts on the 18th green at Augusta National for the Green Jacket and that Jayson Tatum misses the 2 foot putt to finish 2nd. I think Jaylen is clutch.

I also detected what I thought might be jealousy on Tatum's part (body language) when Jaylen was awarded the Eastern Conference Champions MVP award and that could prove problematical, especially on a team that seems to have an offense that relies on Iso ball more that ball movement.

I will be happy either way. I would love to see Jason win as a head coach to add to his resume. And I am a big Jaylen fan. So my bottom line is: Go Bears!

Same.

Remember back in 2019, Jason Kidd was between jobs and told an interviewer that "the only college job he would take is Cal" (Hint hint) and then Knowlton hired Mark Fox?

As a Laker fan, this hurt (in real time). But I was happy that Leon played so well. I was really angry for him, though, when the Celtics essentially screwed him over after the following year by refusing to offer him any real contract. He injured his knee (tore his ACL) in the first round of the playoffs and kept trying to play. He gave his all for the Celtics, only to have them screw him over during contract negotiations. They did him dirty. Helically incline (around an axis) the Celtics!

Just a note on Chenier.

One of my favs. Phil only played 36 games in 77-78 due to a really tough injury. His too-brief career was essentially over.

Yes, I know. He was hired in 2014 to be a "community ambassador." I suspect it pays significantly less than a million a year. Incidentally, Leon's NBA career pretty much ended in 2011, but only after he signed contracts well below the value of what the Celtics should've awarded him for helping them win the championship and then for destroying his knee (and thereby hastening the demise of his career) for them.

If we're counting coaching then let's not forget that Jason Kidd also won a title as an assistant coach on the 2020 Lakers team.

I'm still upset that the Lakers chose Brendan Ingram over Jaylen Brown in the 2016 draft. Then again, they would've traded Jaylen to the Pelicans in the Anthony Davis trade to appease LeBron, anyway. Either way, I'm upset the Lakers let the greatest player of his draft class get drafted by the Celtics.

But even from his days at Cal, anyone could see that Jaylen would become a stud in the NBA. He had the athleticism, the intelligence, and the work ethic. All of that was readily observable when he was a Golden Bear, if not before. (I remember telling random strangers at the bar that he would become a star in the NBA during his lone year at Cal.) The crazy thing is that the reported knock against Jaylen was that he was too intelligent and well-rounded. That's got to be the most ridiculous argument I've ever heard.

Good luck, Jaylen. If you do win a championship this year, I'll be happy for you; you definitely deserve the accolades that have been long overdue.

Honestly Ducky, with social media and the internet, nowadays anybody says anything about anybody or anything else and it always causes an uproar. The only thing one could say that would not be met with discussion or controversy, is that R Duck is the greatest Cal BBall player of all time!

Tatum is as good on defense and has better assist numbers, but Jaylen is a better player when it matters. Tatum is so inconsistent and liable to throw up stinkers in the playoffs like last night.

Tatum shrinks in the big moments; he lacks the killer instinct. Jaylen steps up when the lights are brightest; he has that killer instinct. It's what separates the "really good" from the greats. While Jaylen's body of work in the NBA isn't enough to push him into the greats category, yet, if he keeps playing with same edge and keeps improving, he will end up in that discussion. Tatum will be another Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, or Dominique Wilkins: a truly gifted talent who lacked the greatness gene.

Wild stat… Holiday has 38 points and zero turnovers through two NBA Finals games. The last player to do that? Michael Jordan in 1998. Not bad company for a utility guy!"
