Posted this on the premium board, but am still quite frustrated and wanted to post here. The "geniuses" in the Athletic Department decided to move to a lottery system for student tickets for basketball games.

Why stray from the first-come first-serve model? This disincentivizes early attendance, building atmosphere at games, and instead randomly allocates (by the way, the method of signing up for the lottery is dumb).

Screenshots attached below. Can we please hire someone competent to run marketing and tickets??

This is crazy, thanks for publicizing it. So students are buying tickets, and they might not get in?!?

So you don't know what game you will be able to attend? I don't get it. Dumb.

This is an atrocious policy. The venue rarely sells out. Can someone with contacts complain?

Knowlton is the problem and he is about as far from a "DEI hire" as you can get. Take your racism to the OT board.

I went to ucla for undergrad beginning Fall 1998. Basketball tickets were there own package or could be combined with football. Pretty sure that as long as you applied by a certain date you were guaranteed tickets to basketball games. They had two seating areas: one court side and one in the upper level (sideline). Court side was first come first served and regularly folks would camp overnight to guarantee a wristband to get to that section. After courtside was full any students attending could go to the GA upper level sections. The upper level student section has since been moved to upper baseline.
Does Cal have a similar student spillover section? Can't they put it by the straw hat band behind the basket?

breezy, there's gonna be thousands & thousands of empty seats at haas this year with the unsuccessful branding/marketing of cal basketball by markeisha who stubbornly refuses to offer all students FREE tixs & is hiding behind her worthless bureaucrat failures via dei protections

tryna limit student attendance is mind boggling stupid, this is not pauley pavillion or even haas pavillion during the cal's monster class era of sold out hostile homecourt games...there are literally 5,000-6,000+ empty seats at almost every game for "student spillover"

with the a's, 49ers & raiders all gone from the bay area & the warriors only affordable for the 1 percenters, markeisha is 100% FAILING as she had done from day 1 in damaging cal's revenue sports including the gameday experience while she self promotes her career & shops online being a closed door

anybody wanna guess the attendance for monday nite's season opener??

maybe the bearinsder.com will write an article explaining how the men's basketball attendance got to this point...

cal's monster class how full of **** is knowlton??

despite repeatedly lying to alums, students (eastcoastie & players) & even coach madsen the knowlton pipe dream $150,000,000 3 story basketball practice facility for multiple sports isn't even listed on the current listing of campus capital projects

For gods sake don't dump dynamic pricing on the students!

Great. My friend and I realized today that the window for the Cal Poly game closed to claim a lottery ticket, so now we don't have tickets. We were not thinking a week in advance about this so we missed the 48 hour window to claim tickets. No way enough students claimed tickets to the game either. This is so frustrating

coastie, any chance you would be willing to share again ur experience on a football gameday in ur early berkeley days walking around with knowlton & his commentary re: the basketball practice facility??

there should be no embarazzment in getting played by knowlton, jimmy also lied to coach madsen which resulted in mark during his 1st week on the job stating that the construction of the basketball practice facility wuz imminent

cal's current athletic director is not only financially illiterate but also a pathological liar

yeah, totally willing to admit I got handled. it actually taught me a lot about filtering what I hear with a critical lens, so in a way it was a great life lesson. even back then, the practice facility was "on its way" and with a public-private partnership the cost would supposedly go down to 80M from a 120M price tag. No doubt it's even higher today than it was 2 years ago. The funding model Knowlton proposed also doesn't make sense, in retrospect. He wanted several 8-figure donors to each put in chunks, which seems significantly more improbable than a single lead donor putting up most of the money.

Truth is, the cost is just too inhibitive. Unfortunate, really. I also learned from Ben Braun at 4thGen's event at SAE that he had the money secured for a practice facility, and that later coaches (Monty, Cuonzo) also had it set. It really does matter, too. It is a huge negative recruiting opportunity for opposing coaches to say "hey, you know those guys at Cal are the only ones without a practice facility, right?" to recruits.

By what criteria do you think our $250K per year Ticketing and Marketing Director was hired? And how is she retained after continued atrocious performance?
