First of all, I realize that like us Vanderbilt is a team comprised of all new transfer players. So credit must be given to them.

Because last night's game was so similiar to many of our early games last year. Countless amount of turnovers that led to defenseless transition baskets. Last year we eventually trimmed this problem down with a team that had less depth and athleticism. Vanderbilt decided to overplay everything last night unlike the first two teams we played and the Bears could not handle it.

And ironically we did nothing of the sort to Vandy, who was in the same situation as us except of course they were playing at home.

The loss was disturbing, but I'm not ready to pile on Madsen just yet. I know no one likes to hear this but we did play them even the second half. I might be setting the bar low, but many of us agreed we would all be happy with a competitive team. At least we competed in the second half. I'm cautiously optimistic that things will get better.

Whats disturbing is that there appeared to be no adjustments to the pressure. If the point is being being doubled, somebody must be open. I was hoping we would use Dort and go to a post up game

True but the system is the system, although Madsen might have made some adjustments had he been there.

Yup. Played basketball in high school and when our team got pressured because they were face guarding us, our coach would dial up plays to keep them in check. For example, four out with the big man in the paint while people ran backdoor cuts, or a lot of ball screens to knife into the paint, etc.

Gotta think that Mazarei is right there with Madsen the majority of the time. No reason to be that Mazarei isn't familiar with everything Madsen has in place. Either we weren't prepared for the overplay pressure or we didn't execute any plan to offset it.

Exactly. With today's emphasis on the 3pt shot, most teams are playing four out (if not five) anyway.

I was thinking the same thing. The lack of any adjustment was disappointing.

Not sure how others feel, but the next few games will determine how much attention I end up paying to the team. Typically I try to plan my schedule to watch live or at least record the game. However, if the team loses like that against the two better programs in the OOC coming up, USC and Missouri, then I'm less likely to bother the rest of the season. I'll spend my leisure time watching other games - more enjoyable.

It was also just plain bad fundamental basketball. If you're a competent high major D1 guard, nobody alone should be able to make you pick up your dribble from mid court over and over again.

I have been seeing turnovers a lot in watching Cal basketball on the road in the last 50 years
