Looks like the three starters are still out.
Bears up just two halfway through the first half

I watched the whole game. I like Patraitis's hustle and intensity. Wilkinson is still playing surprisingly well for a true freshman. Andrej Stojakovic played well, but struggled at the line a bit. Also, I'm not sure if he came to Cal to carry the load, but in these past few games, that's exactly what he's been asked to do.

Sisoko got a couple BS fouls and a BS tech called on him. The one in the first half where he got bumped into the Sacto's guard was ridiculous as was the reaching foul at the end (though that one was more understandable; he really should've known better than to reach).

Spencer Mahoney played well in the few minutes he got off the bench. He made the most of his time on the floor and did what he had to do without trying to do too much.

I also really like all the blocks that the Bears managed. I just wish they would've hauled in the balls instead of swatting it out of bounds. Still, the swats denied the Hornets of easy buckets.

With Blacksher, Omot, and Campbell out, the Bears managed to win the games they were supposed to win. This bodes well, but I'm withholding judgment until Cal plays some better teams. The Vandy game was an unpleasant surprise; I'm hoping that was just a fluke. OTOH, the SC game was a surprise in the other direction. However, SC hasn't beaten anyone of note in their pre-conference games.

Long story short, Cal looks like it's trending upward but it's still too early to know what we have in Cal's team this year. So far, though, I do like what I've seen. The team defense needs time to gel and the players need to space better on offense. But I think Madsen will get the team playing in sync by the time conference play begins in earnest.

Even though I just said that it's too early to know what Cal has, I have a feeling Cal will be a middle of the ACC team this year. The team will probably make the NIT, though a ticket to the Dance seems unlikely.

An NIT bid would be great progress for this program.

I'm wondering if Cal offered him when he transferred from Santa Clara. He's a good stretch big who can make 3s at a really high rate. He'll probably go undrafted but get some looks by NBA teams (especially in summer league).

Wyking Jones or Mark Fox loses this game.

best thing about this game is bench got a lot of PT for second game in the row

some good, bad and ugly but with fewer injuries last year's team lost some of these early games to mid-majors

although it's really hard to take too many things from a game with 3 starters out, here are a few:

1. Wilkerson can hoop

2. still concerned about our 3 point shooting, which will also make it much tougher to drive

3. concerned about Tucker

My favorite part of the video is a comment by Ben Braun in a sequence that starts at about 3:05.

"Call me Nostradamus". It just cracked me up. Ben never tries to be goofy, but can come off that way. I think he should work that line into every broadcast and make it his trademark. I can see it now; t-shirts and coffee mugs all over Berkeley with Ben's picture and "Call me Nostradamus" on them.

Obviously, I'm still in my Post Big-Game Euphoria.

I sure enjoyed attending Cal's last NIT appearance, you know, the one where Cal State Bakersfield schlonged us at Haas with Ivan Rabb on the bench in street clothes, the Fiji Water Girl delivering 15 cases of water to the coaching staff during the game, and Cuonzo leaving with 5 minutes left in the game to take a cab to the airport to catch his flight to Missouri, with the wreckage of the Cal Basketball program in his rearview mirror.

I have fond memories of the NIT. Cal won the NIT in 1999 when I was a student. It was one of the few varsity sports bright spots when I was an undergrad.

Not sure how much to read into these performances with the players we are missing. Probably fine to just win and move on.

Exactly. This is a Sac State team who lost to both UC San Diego and Cal State Northridge by 10 and whose only win is over Cal Maritime. We were missing key players, we got the win, hopefully we get healthy fast.

Very true. They were also down a starter.

That said, I like how the team is able to find ways to win. I like how the team isn't focused on solely one star but has multiple scorers. I'm still concerned about the team D and the team's outside shooting, but I think Madsen has the team trending in the right direction (even if the ultimate record at season's end may not reflect it).
