When I saw that score this morning I had to take a second look.

Since it's USC somehow I don't mind.

Their season should be fun, flying cross country to Maryland or Purdue to get thumped, hope they really enjoy their inaugural Big Ten season.

Reminds me of Cal scoring 5. Points in a half against Notre Dame Usc is not as good as we thought but not as bad as last night.

As a dad of a former piedmont high school basketball player, it was cool to see 2 former Piedmont players ; Luke Barrett is a redshirt Sr starter for St Mary's and Britt Burden is a freshman walk on at USC.
Go Highlanders!

Yikes! To me, the USC win meant the team wasn't as bad as the Vanderbilt beat down suggested. Perhaps that view might be premature. These next two games will be telling before ACC play really begins.

Well I don't know. Some at Missouri want to get rid of The Sheriff

I lived in Piedmont for 21 years. My kids went to Piedmont HS. This is a terrible tragedy. Piedmont is basically a small town and everyone knows everybody.

Its puzzling that the usc coach is having so much trouble getting thevteam to play together. I guess it depends on what players you get.

My older son was classmates with all those kids. One of his former basketball teammates pulled the only survivor out of the truck. It's heartbreaking.
As you said, Everyone knows everyone - the whole community is in shock and mourning.

I hadn't heard about the crash, but it sounds like a terrible tragedy. I didn't grow up in Piedmont, but I lived nearby in Oakland. Piedmont High was closer to my house but I went to Oakland High. I used to practice kicking field goals at the Piedmont High field with the idea of being the kicker when I was in high school, but I never got good enough.

One weird thing about the accident for me. It involved a Tesla Cybertruck and I happened to see one for the first time yesterday in a parking lot. I had no idea what it was and thought it was a homebrewed car body until I watched the news coverage of the Piedmont crash just now. I almost took a picture of it but felt weird doing that with so many people walking about in the parking lot. I hope the crash wasn't due to a Tesla self-driving glitch. That would be even worse.

Now stanford has lost to Grand Canyon AND Cal Poly. Granted, Poly caught major fire in the 2nd half, but still, bad look.

the ACC is not having a good year so far in general, Miami just lost to Charleston Southern and Boston College lost to Dartmouth... at least Pitt got a nice win over Ohio St but that's pretty much it as far as good wins go

Would really be nice to put together two wins in a row here. Really hoping our three "injured" guys were just resting excessively and will be coming out 100%. Last thing we need is another major sport with another injury-plagued season. We should be able to win the next two game. Fingers crossed. Madsen needs a few statement ROAD wins to bolster his status among donors and fans.

Police arrived a few minutes after the crash only to find the car in flames that were "twice as high as the car", but they made it a point to say they didn't think the battery exploded. So what else is there to burn on an EV? Horrible accident.

This afternoon I rode my bike by the crash site. Hampton road there is almost wide enough for 4 lanes and gently curved, you could make the turn at 60 mph or more if you had room to accelerate. The wall was slightly damaged and I couldn't tell which tree was hit (though one had an ad hoc memorial). That's all I know but there's a (subscriber) article in the SJ Mercury:
https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/12/03/fatal-tesla-cybertruck-crash-in-piedmont-being-reviewed-by-federal-agency/

I have a number of questions:

  • Was another vehicle involved? Probably not on a quiet street in Piedmont at 3 AM but maybe a camera caught something.
  • Did the fire start before the collision? Again I hope some camera recorded it.
  • Did the fire start in the batteries or in some cargo? The back of the truck looks much less damaged so probably not cargo.
  • Was the truck on autopilot?

Maybe modern cars need to be equipped with aircraft-grade black boxes.
