The key to the game was getting both of their top scorers saddled with 4 fouls with 10+ minutes left imho. It took a few minutes but eventually Cal pulled away. When their scorers came back in, they were cold and not as effective as before. Perhaps the team came out more focused knowing they didn't have Andrej to rely on for his points, nice win against a team that came in 13-5. Nice interview with Wilkinson in the post game show, he shows a maturity surprising for someone 18. Hopefully we see a better crowd for the next home game.

Quite the free throw shots disparity - but not as big on the number of fouls called.
You could say the Bears won it at the line - but the Bears worked for those opportunities.
And it helped that Ewen and Watkins sat for an extended time - although it was only near the end of that time that the Bears finally pushed the lead out to 10, so unclear how much help it actually was.
It did seem like fatigue played a role as FSU's defense got looser in the last five minutes. .

or stop shooting. Blackshur jacked up some rushed 3's, with plenty of time left on the clock

Miami has 4 wins and is getting hammered by Stanford. Burn down Haas if we do not win.

Rytis is worth the price of admission all by himself. This team is fun to watch. Great effort all around. Pretty unselfish play, and some nice anticipatory passing. They're starting to come together as a unit. Wilkinson is going to be amazing. Kind of already is. We are a consistent three point shooter or two away from a tourney bid. Hope we keep getting better.

What was Omot's injury? Will he be back?

Without Andrej I think everyone thought hey we've got to play hard. And they did. The whole game. That kind of energy is fun to watch. Good win!

Out for the season. They never announced what the injury was.

Don't know what the injury is, but Madsen said he is out for the year. Should count as a medical red shirt.

"Rytis is worth the price of admission all by himself."
When you look up the term "high motor" in the dictionary, there is a picture of him there.

I'll be the one who brings up the elephant in the room.

Does the team move the ball on offense better (and thus have a more efficient offense) with andrej not in there?

I'm one of andrej's biggest fans. I think he oozes potential. But I gotta say, the team had a different energy and body language today.

This is why I get frustrated when people say Sissoko isn't good enough

And I'll take Rytis on my team all day and all night

I expect us to go to the Rose Bowl, every damn year. And, yes, I know the Rose Bowl isn't even a thing for us anymore.

Love the stat lines for Sissoko and Petraitis!

Is that five solid games in a row for Mady?

They need to keep a stat line for getting loose balls or keeping balls alive. Petratis is worth lkke 4-5 extra possessions a game, at least

Great game for Mady, I hope he keeps up the momentum. There are a lot of positives coming out of this game. But I have to say I walked away feeling lucky thar FSU played badly enough that we could get a win, rather than feeling that our offense gelled in a way that will enable us to win when the opposing team is shooting 10% better than FSU's 42% (20% from 3-pt range).
I still saw most trips down the floor for Cal as one-on-one drives, some timely 3-balls (but shooting 6-23 treys is not something to be proud of), and being generally disorganized.
I'm glad we stopped playing soft D, but to get to that 14-win mark (after a W against Miami Sat. maybe only 3 Ws away from that!) we're going to have to figure out what to do with Blacksher (1-11 last night) and how to run these picks-and-rolls and screens that all the X-and-O guys in this Forum have been talking about.

-If you told me Andrej would be out and that Blacksher would have his worst game of the season, I would have bet the farm on FSU. Nice, surprising win that showed our best team play of the season. It must be mentioned however that there was a lid on FSU's basket. We've certainly had games like that this year but man they missed a lot of lay-ups and bunnies.

-Maybe it was just one bad game for Blacksher but is there something wrong with him? Maybe his knee still isn't 100%. As a former preseason conference player of the year, albeit it in the WAC, he should be making more of an impact. Just seems overwhelmed by P4 size and athleticism. He gets his shot blocked a lot---pretty much every lay-up attempt. He also bricked 2 free throws after getting fouled on a 3 attempt. Perhaps the most concerning is his body language. He just doesn't look invested out there.

-I am very pleased with Sissoko this year---he has exceeded my expectations. He has been rock-solid in the post. Sure, he doesn't have much offense but he's a fierce rebounder, good shot blocker, decent hands, smart defender, great attitude. I'm already worried about replacing him next year.

Other notes from the game…
-We reverted to some bad habits from earlier in the year. 1) Poor inbounding and 2) Guards picking up their dribbles. This is basic stuff that I thought we cleaned up.
-Did anyone notice the FSU's big man Ewin delivering little cheap shots? Nothing super dirty, more like veteran moves to get under opponents skin. They type of hidden bumps and shoves that are called on the opponent for retaliation. Sissoko didn't retaliate of course but pointed it out to the refs. It was kinda funny to watch.
-Women's hoop team got a nice little ovation.
-The mic-woman's microphone was way too f'ing loud---combined with her shrieking voice, I had to cover my ears.
-The Wilkinson dime to JOJ for the and-1 dunk might have been the play of the year.
-In the upper concourse on the southwest corner, Cal marketing was giving away free sparkling waters and burritos. It was so random especially since there's very little foot traffic up there. *** is up with this department?

Wilkinson has earned a start over Blacksher. He jacked up a couple of rushed 3's yesterday with plenty of time left on the clock. Just bad decisions.

Agreed on that mic woman. I'm not usually one to complain about noise at games but her high volume shrieking absolutely bores directly into my brain. I can only imagine what it does to people with hearing aids. And it's every game she's out there, too. They really need to turn down her mic.

Honestly I don't get it at all......

Does anyone know if there was ANY direct outreach to the dorms on Tuesday or Wednesday morning? And how did the student section look?

Madsen was giving out donuts on campus to promote the game and they had a popular DJ outside Haas before the game but the student section was really sparse.

IMHO aside from the volume she's fine.

I find the volume of everything at our men's games too loud but her volume is on another level entirely. The one person most responsible for me attending fewer men's games is not Knowlton (who is second) but whoever controls the amplifiers.

Whats interesting is that the sound guy at the SAP center was really good when Cal played there. Not too loud and no obnoxious rap.

We need to explain to Mark (cause the ad staff is clueless non cal people that it would be far better to hand out food at Sather gate or in front of unit 2. Haas is off the beaten path for kids going to and from class

Also as far as I could tell on TV she wasn't leading the "ohhhhhh" on defense. Just doing the defense clap-clap defense chant like it was an NBA game. Not even defense BEARS defense. Come on guys let's step up the game. And it's not just up to the mic-men/women to prompt everything. The expectation can't be if you show up (yes kudos for that, that is more than 99% of other Cal students) you good. Students gotta carry/ignite the noise.

Based on attending several football games each year and I'm astonished that the Mic-People do the same tepid stuff and get the same tepid response year after year. When I was 20 years-old, I probably wouldn't have thought to do a "how can we do better" review, but whoever guides the Rally Com should suggest that. They don't need imagination, just plagiarize others. An hour spent searching YouTube videos of cheerleaders and rooting sections would probably spark a lot of ideas. For all I know, there are websites and Reddit discussions devoted to this.
I know, it won't happen . . . and honestly, I care more about the quality of the teams than the student section.

+1. I thought the same thing. Still a decent amount of players taking it upon themselves to score on their own, but seemed like the offense was flowing better. Wish more players played like Petraitis though - not only a double-double, but he led the team in assists. He was always looking for his teammates which was refreshing.

There is a rich history of yell leaders/mic-men to explore, use and revitalize. No need to go outside of Cal.

I thought the converse gift thing was kind of cringe, as it might have been perceived as "look at me, with my big nil, throwing you guys a bone with a pair of shoes." It just isn't the same as an nfl qb buying his oline new cars, since they're all making millions, too. I think it was well meaning, but probably hit a little weird. Now, if it was Andrej who pulled strings with converse to get them to do it all for the team for free, I take this thought back. That would be slick, and clever.

But as it looked to me, all of the press around it made it seem like he's the only player on the team, and all of the acc network and announcer praise about being a top conference scorer makes it seem like the team would be nothing without him. All of that wears on a team, so they had a chance to go out and prove they can do it without him, and they did. I think this will be humbling and well received by Andrej and it will end up leading to better relationships and better performance overall. I wish the tv people wouldn't spend so much time showing and taking about Peja, too. I think it's great he's there to support his son, but I wonder if it's a distraction. He's a good player. He'a a valuable member of the team. He'll probably make it to the nba, but he needs to shoot a LOT better, he needs to become a better creator and passer, and he needs to dial back the inclination to save the team all by himself. This is all speculation, but I just get the feeling all of this is what's happening. If Andrej embraces the unselfish creator role, he'll get more open looks, easier shots and probably also put up better numbers. The team will play better. That last game, they were on a mission. They need to build on that.
