I wonder whether games like tonight will influence Stoj's (and Peja's) decision about whether to return to Cal for another season?

What other coach will let him shoot whenever he wants to?

Where else would he go? 3 teams in 3 years would be wild. Maybe he tries G League.

Any time he might spend searching for a new team, he would be better served by searching for his jump shot.

Stojakobrick is highly overrated. I'm not sure losing him would be such a bad thing.

Saying that losing him won't matter is probably a bit of an overreaction.

OTOH, let's put to bed the idea from the other thread of playing him at the point guard spot.

Stojakobrick starting at PG was a laughable idea

Addition by subtraction. Should have known what a selfish player he would be based on how we got him and what Madsen had to guarantee him.

Stojakobrick's last 10 games:

10.8 ppg
31% FG
16% 3Pt
1.9 Apg
2.8 TOVpg

NIL donors not seeing great ROI there.

For the season, AS and JW are shooting a combined 40.3% from the floor and 30.4% from 3pt.

Their combined A/TOV ratio is 0.83.

It is the outside shoot. What I saw yesterday was that unlike start of acc trams are forcing him left and he doesn't finish as well. So he then put up bricks. He was, however out two weeks with something wrong with legs/hips and that can impact shot.

It was also the same matchup problem.we had with cuse....big guards.

While general criticism is fair ,I feel the "selfish player" tag is not. Too many times this year he ends up shooting because he and JW are the only players we have capable of creating their own shot. And with our offense quite often it becomes a neccessity.

Yeah - I haven't seen this. What I saw last night (and it is just so much true on the offensive end this year) is that we are incapable of hitting open shots. We get them. I saw a number of opportunities. But clank.

Meanwhile The Cards ((who we should note are 14th in the country and playing at home) did not.

I actually thought our defense was about middling for the year (first half, I turned off at half time as I had a headache unrelated to Bears sports).

We absolutely need better shooters at the 2 3 and 4 next year. The modern game IS about outside to in. But we saw it again tonight - taller guards play up on the bears, their 4 and 5 sag. Drives become problematic and swat city. It explains most of the drought in the last 8 minutes of the first half that essentially sealed the game. My concern is that EVERYONE wants shooters at the 2,3 and 4 and that Madsen may not be the guy to raise NIL from our traditional BB funders.

If you don't have enough players who can create their own shot, then you need schemes to get players open. Without those schemes, you end up with what Rod Benson mentions: boring basketball. It's not as inept as the WyFox eras, but it's not gonna put butts in the seats, let alone win games.

See I disagree (in part) with this. There were several times where our guards penetrated. They kicked to the wing. Sometimes then an extra pass was made to the corner. And then STJ or Petris would brick. Sometimes the high ball screen to JW and then the guard would close and with a hand in face --- brick.

Meanwhile watch Cardinals. At least in the first half their offense isn't that amazingly better. But they make their shots.

AS has skills, but no game. When in doubt, he goes to what worked in high school (1 on 5) but which does not work in D-1. If someone can teach him how to play in a team concept, he can be very valuable. Otherwise, he will be playing in a Y somewhere after college.

We're not going to change coaches two years removed from 3-29. And even if it was possibility, I'm not sure the options are that great. The two competitors with Madsen were Shareef's brother, who subsequently passed away, and Pasternack, who is having a middling season at USSB. I would do it if it would reopen the Goldman's wallet, which supposedly slammed shut when Pasternack didn't get the job last time.

Fair points - Cal does not have great shooters. But in your examples, I believe the end results are all, or mostly missed 3pt shots. Cal hasn't accepted the fact that they aren't a consistent 3pt shooting team. A few weeks back, I attended the Cal-Syracuse women's game (my first since 1976!) where Cal shot 5-19 on 3pt shots, but they still won via players getting open and good passing resulting in midrange and inside shots. The men's team apparently can't do this and that's what I was attempting to point out.

Incidentally, Cal women play Virginia at 2PM (PST) today on the ACC network.

Issue is that we don't have a dominant inside score either and 3>2. We do get to the line (a lot). When we tried to drive inside during the run swat city and they had sagged
